  • Publication number: 20050004272
Abstract: Aqueous latex polymer dispersion compositions are disclosed characterized by their small particle size. The compositions are prepared by emulsion polymerization of one or more ethylenically unsaturated monomer in the presence of an alkyd seed containing sulfonate groups. Coatings based on these latex dispersions have improved advantages in film forming, gloss, hardness, low residual monomer content, less yellowing, and low VOC. The latex dispersions, having average particle sizes of 60-140 nm, are prepared by using a small ratio (i.e. about 2-15 wt. %) of an aqueous alkyd dispersion as the seed for latex particle growth. The waterborne alkyds are based on 5-sodiosulfo-isophthalic acid and either unsaturated or saturated fatty acids. The latex polymer dispersions thus obtained have improved film forming properties as well as low residual monomer content. The latexes are capable of forming clear, hard films at room temperature in the absence of external coalescents.

  • Patent number: 6683132
Abstract: Self-crosslinking aqueous coating compositions are disclosed comprising a water-dispersible alkyd having both sulfonate and acetoacetate functionality, a suitable bi- or poly-functional primary amine, and a monofunctional primary or cycloaliphatic secondary amine. The crosslinking of the composition includes oxidative curing via the fatty acid segments of the alkyd, and crosslinking via reaction between the acetoacetate groups of the alkyd and the primary amine groups of the polyfunctional amine. The aqueous alkyd systems disclosed do not require the presence of amines for the purpose of dispersing the alkyds, while exhibiting superior tack-free and through-dry times when used in coating compositions. Performance levels are achieved that heretofore had required increases in molecular weight and Tg, with a concomitant increase in VOC levels. Also disclosed are methods of making the inventive compositions.

  • Patent number: 6576717
Abstract: Disclosed is a water-dispersible acrylic-modified polyester resin containing sulfonate groups prepared by addition copolymerization of ethylenically unsaturated vinyl monomers and a polyester. The polyester is prepared from a polycondensation reaction with dicarboxylic acids, glycols, ethylenically unsaturated monomer, and a minor amount of a sulfomonomer. The acrylic-modified polyester is prepared by first producing the polyester under polycondensation conditions followed by the addition polymerization of the ethylenically unsaturated vinyl monomers. The acrylic-modified polyesters can be formed into a coating composition that has zero or very little organic solvent and is very useful to produce crosslinked cured enamels having excellent gloss, hardness, impact resistance, and water resistance such as those used in automotive finishes, appliance, and coil coatings.

  • Patent number: 6472466
Abstract: The present invention describes the preparation of multifunctional imine-esters and their application as novel crosslinkers for surface coatings. The imine-esters are prepared by reacting a di- or tri-aldehyde with an &agr;-aminoester such as glycine ethyl ester hydrochloride. These novel crosslinkers may then be formulated with polyesters containing maleic anhydride residues to give enamel coating formulations. The enamels may be cured by a 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition mechanism to give carbon-carbon bonds and cyclic structure. Coatings thus prepared have advantages of low toxicity, no formaldehyde evolution, and improved performance.
