Patent number: 7257595Abstract: A transactional file system performs multiple file system operations as part of a user-level transaction. An application specifies that operations should be handled as part of a transaction, and the application is given a file handle associated with the transaction context. Operations are managed consistent with transactional behavior and data isolation is provided with multiple versions of a file and by tracking copies of pages that have changed. Transactional readers do not receive changes to a file made by transactional writers, until the transactional writer commits the transaction and the reader reopens the file. Logging and recovery are also facilitated by logging page data separate from the main log, with a unique signature that enables the log to determine whether a page was fully flushed to disk prior to a system crash. Namespace isolation is also provided until a transaction commits via isolation directories.Type: GrantFiled: December 10, 2004Date of Patent: August 14, 2007Assignee: Microsoft CorporationInventors: Surendra Verma, Thomas J. Miller, Robert G. Atkinson

Patent number: 7143611Abstract: Embodiments of the invention include an optical fiber preform assembly and a method for making optical fiber using the preform assembly. The assembly includes a preform core rod, at least one overclad tube formed around the preform core rod, a handle attached to one end of the overclad tube, and a refractory material positioned in the overclad tube between the preform core rod and the handle. The refractory material reduces if not prevents movement of the preform core rod into the handle during the fiber draw process. Preferably, the refractory material is made of, e.g., magnesium oxide and/or aluminum oxide, and has a melting point, e.g., greater than approximately 2000 degrees Celsius. Embodiments of the invention also include a method for making optical fiber using this preform assembly.Type: GrantFiled: September 19, 2003Date of Patent: December 5, 2006Assignee: Fitel USA CorpInventors: Joseph P. Patent number: 7121032Abstract: A recoil pad for a shoulder firearm includes at least one piston member that is caused to move axially from an initial axial position to a second axial position upon application of the recoil force from the firearm. The axial movement of the piston member causes fluid movement within a column relative to a variable or fixed orifice area wherein the fluid movement causes resistance that absorbs the energy. A mechanical and/or hydraulic and/or elastomeric feature returns the piston to the initial axial position upon cessation of the applied recoiling force.Type: GrantFiled: February 3, 2005Date of Patent: October 17, 2006Assignee: Enidine, Inc.Inventors: Terrance E. Patent number: 7028508Abstract: In the known method for producing an optical fiber, a coaxial arrangement comprising a core rod and an outer jacket tube is elongated, the coaxial arrangement being supplied in a vertical orientation to a heating zone and being softened therein zonewise, starting with the lower end thereof, and the optical fiber being withdraw downwards from the softened portion, whereby an annular gap existing between core rod and jacket tube is collapsed. Starting therefrom, in order to provided a method which makes it possible to produce optical fibers with a minimum curl and at low costs, the invention suggests that a quartz glass cylinder treated mechanically to its final dimension and having an outer diameter of at least 100 mm should be used as the jacket tube. An optical fiber obtained according to the method is characterized in that without the action of external forces it assumes a radius of curvature of at least 6 mm.Type: GrantFiled: March 6, 2003Date of Patent: April 18, 2006Assignee: Heraeus Tenevo GmbHInventors: Heinz Fabian, Thomas J. Patent number: 7000711Abstract: A horizontal bore cryogenic drilling method includes in a first embodiment forming a pilot hole of a first select diameter along a desired path of the horizontal bore. A grindable casing is inserted into the guide bore. A cryogenic fluid is flowed through the grindable casing to form a freeze zone of frozen moisture adjacent the grindable casing having a second select diameter. A primary bore is formed having a third select diameter greater than the first diameter and less than the second select diameter within the freeze zone along the desired path of the horizontal bore with the grindable casing in place. The second diameter is selected to be sufficiently greater than the third select diameter to prevent collapse of the freeze zone. Another embodiment of the invention is a method of forming a horizontal bore in an earth formation including providing a drill string having a conduit communicating with a cutting tool for engaging the earth formation.Type: GrantFiled: February 9, 2004Date of Patent: February 21, 2006Assignees: CH2M Hill, Inc., Ruekert & Meilke, Inc.Inventors: Thomas J. Patent number: 6956941Abstract: A method and system schedules inbound inquiries, such as inbound telephone calls, for response by agents in an order that is based in part on the forecasted outcome of the inbound inquiries. A scheduling module applies inquiry information to a model to forecast the outcome of an inbound inquiry. The forecasted outcome is used to set a priority value for ordering the inquiry. The priority value may be determined by solving a constrained optimization problem that seeks to maximize an objective function, such as maximizing an agent's productivity to produce sales or to minimize inbound call attrition. The inbound call may be placed on a virtual hold or be responded to on a real-time basis based on the inbound inquiry's priority value. A modeling module generates models that forecast inquiry outcomes based on a history and inquiry information. Statistical analysis such as regression analysis determines the model with the outcome related to the nature of the inquiry.Type: GrantFiled: April 12, 2000Date of Patent: October 18, 2005Assignee: Austin Logistics IncorporatedInventors: Daniel N. Duncan, Alexander N. Svoronos, Thomas J. Miller

Patent number: 6856993Abstract: A transactional file system wherein multiple file system operations may be performed as transaction. An application specifies that file system-related operations should be handled in a transaction, and is given a file handle associated with a transaction context. For file system requests associated with a transaction context, a file system component manages operations consistent with transactional behavior. The component provides data isolation by providing multiple file versions such that transactional readers do not receive changes until after the transaction commits and the reader reopens the file. The component handles namespace logging operations in a multiple-level log that facilitates logging and recovery. Page data is logged separate from the main log, with signatures establishing whether pages were fully flushed to disk. Namespace isolation via isolation directories allows a transaction to see its operational effects but not effects of other uncommitted transactions.Type: GrantFiled: March 30, 2000Date of Patent: February 15, 2005Assignee: Microsoft CorporationInventors: Surendra Verma, Thomas J.
