  • Publication number: 20020141105
Abstract: A robust and efficient method for determining the location of a transducer head in a mass storage system. A position-indicative signal characterized by a fundamental frequency F is received from a data path including the transducer head. Energy in the signal at frequencies smaller than F/10 is substantially attenuated by a special filter, which may be an analog or digital differentiator. A sequence of bits indicative of the transducer head position indicator is then extracted from the digitized, filtered signal.

  • Patent number: 6180260
Abstract: A method for providing a substantially-smooth protective coating on a metal-based substrate is disclosed. It comprises the steps of: (a) applying a thermal barrier coating over the substrate by plasma-spraying; (b) plasma-heating the applied coating according to a time- and temperature schedule sufficient to re-melt the surface region of the coating, allowing it to flow and smoothen; and then (c) cooling the surface region to a temperature below its melting point. The thermal barrier coating is often zirconia-based, e.g., yttria-stabilized zirconia. After being cooled, the surface is much smoother than when originally applied, thereby allowing the coating to be used in a higher-temperature environment.

  • Patent number: 6103315
Abstract: A method for providing a substantially-smooth protective coating on a metal-based substrate is disclosed. A thermal barrier coating is first applied over the substrate by plasma-spraying. The coating is then plasma-heated according to a time- and temperature schedule sufficient to re-melt its surface region, allowing the coating material to flow and smoothen. The surface region is then allowed to cool to a temperature below its melting point. After being cooled, the surface is much smoother than when originally applied, which allows the coating to be used in a higher-temperature environment. The coating is often zirconia-based, e.g., yttria-stabilized zirconia.

  • Patent number: 6069764
Abstract: A method and apparatus for compensating for repeatable run-out errors in a disc drive is disclosed. The compensation is created by determining transfer function values for a servo loop in the drive as well as a sequence of repeatable run-out values for a portion of a disc. The repeatable run-out values are divided by respective transfer function values to produce compensation values that are inverse transformed to produce time-domain compensation values. These time-domain compensation values are injected into the servo loop to compensate for repeatable run-out errors.

  • Patent number: 6021668
Abstract: This invention includes a combustion engine fuel level indication system operable at 10 mA or lower and without any contact resistance buildup. The present system utilizes a noble metal ink formulation for both contacts of resistive path and a conductive path. The resistive and conductive paths each having angled conductor lines which reduce the overall volume requirement for the noble metal ink composition used to make the paths. The invention also includes a wiper contact having spaced apart parallel tangs or fingers positioned so that a first finger engages a first conductor line along the conductive path and a second finger engages an adjacent conductor line along the conductive path to improve the make brake contact.
