  • Patent number: 9435517
Abstract: A lighting fixture is presented comprising a plurality of modular apparatuses wherein each modular apparatus comprises one or more light sources and one or more light directing or light redirecting devices. Methods of adjusting one or more components of said lighting fixture about one, two, or three axes are presented whereby the lighting needs of a target area—even one of complex shape—may be addressed and in a manner that promotes compact fixture design with low effective projected area (EPA) without sacrificing transmission efficiency of the light sources.

  • Publication number: 20160023308
Abstract: A nanosolder comprises a first metal nanoparticle core coated with a second metal shell, wherein the first metal has a higher surface energy and smaller atomic size than the second metal. For example, a bimetallic nanosolder can comprise a protective Ag shell “glued” around a reactive Cu nanoparticle. As an example, a 3-D epitaxial Cu-core and Ag-shell structure was generated from a mixture of copper and silver nanoparticles in toluene at temperatures as low as 150° C.

  • Patent number: 9144141
Abstract: A method of sensing magnitude of lumen depreciation not only of a lamp of a lighting fixture, but other factors, by sensing a relative light level external of the lighting fixture to derive not only lamp lumen depreciation but total lumen depreciation from the fixture. An apparatus of monitoring light level of one or more lighting fixtures comprises a sensor positioned external of the lighting fixture(s), a comparator adapted to compare a measured actual lumen output signal from the sensor to a pre-set reference or threshold lumen output value. An error signal is generated by the comparator if the comparison indicates actual lumen output to have dropped below the reference or threshold lumen output. An alarm or communication can be actuated by the error signal to instruct corrective action to ensure relatively constant light levels to be maintained for the lighting system over time, thus providing ongoing assurance to the end user of proper system operation.

  • Publication number: 20150210560
Abstract: A method for the hydrothermal synthesis of bismuth germanium oxide comprises dissolving a bismuth precursor (e.g., bismuth nitrate pentahydrate) and a germanium precursor (e.g., germanium dioxide) in water and heating the aqueous solution to an elevated reaction temperature for a length of time sufficient to produce the eulytite phase of bismuth germanium oxide (E-BGO) with high yield. The E-BGO produced can be used as a scintillator material. For example, the air stability and radioluminescence response suggest that the E-BGO can be employed for medical applications.

  • Patent number: 9066401
Abstract: A method, apparatus, and system for compensating for lamp lumen depreciation. The method includes operating the lamp under rated wattage for a period towards the first part of operating life of the lamp. Operating wattage is increased at one or more later times. Energy savings are realized. The increases also restore at least some light lost by lamp lumen depreciation. The apparatus uses a timer to track operating time of the lamp. A few wattage changes made at spaced apart times can be made in a number of ways, including changing capacitance to the lamp, or using different taps on the lamp ballast. In one aspect the invention pertains to solid state sources. The invention can pertain to a variety of applications including wide area lighting, indoor lighting, pathway lighting, parking lot lighting, street lighting, under-counter or -cabinet lighting, and others.

  • Patent number: 8770796
Abstract: A high intensity discharge (HID) light fixture includes a reflector frame which supports an independent high reflectivity reflecting surface. The reflector frame supports a glass lens with anti-reflective coatings on its surfaces and a visor or extension that also supports an independent high reflectivity reflecting surface. The high reflectivity reflecting surface has various sections that adjust portions of the beam created by the fixture to better place light on a target area. The reflector frame is attachable to a lamp cone. An adjustable knuckle attaches between to a cross arm on a pole and the lamp cone. An HID lamp, when mounted in the lamp cone, has its arc tube substantially surrounded by the high reflectivity reflecting surfaces of the reflector frame and visor. A lamp positioning mechanism automatically adjusts orientation of the arc lamp over a range of pivot angles for the lamp cone relative the knuckle.

  • Patent number: 8717552
Abstract: Methods and apparatuses are provided that can be utilized for accurate pre-aiming and installation of devices. The devices are pre-set to an aiming orientation relative to a universal reference plane. The reference plane is then correlated to a feature of a pole, tower, or other structure that will be used to elevate or suspend the devices. A position sensing subsystem is utilized to inform a worker when each device is correctly angularly oriented to the reference plane. The worker simply moves the mounting structure for the device to the correct three-dimensional angular orientation, uses the position sensor to confirm the correct orientation to within a highly accurate margin of error, and either locks the device in that orientation or marks the orientation. The pole, tower, or other elevating structure is preliminarily erected at its pre-designed location and pre-designed rotational orientation with the pre-aimed devices.

  • Publication number: 20140092593
Abstract: A design of lighting fixture is presented whereby the outer glass lens—flat in prior art lighting fixtures—is bowed outward. The design of lighting fixture permits a plurality of LED modules to be contained therein, each with their own visor, without constraining the aiming angle of each due to interference between the outer lens and each individual visor. In this manner, an external visor may be omitted thereby obviating undesirable lighting effects such as uneven lighting while still maintaining a reduced effective projected area (EPA) as compared to prior art lighting fixtures with no external visor and a flat outer glass lens.
