  • Publication number: 20160345167
Abstract: A wireless communication system includes a virtual terminal formed from one or more independent devices, a terminal management entity for managing the virtual terminal. The devices may be independent physical devices (smartphones, tablet computers), virtual machines/modules of physical devices, or a combination of both. The virtual terminal and terminal management entity communicate via a base station and/or access point. The terminal management entity creates a service ID for a service to be provided to the virtual terminal, the service ID being shared by the one or more independent devices, each having its own device ID. The TME forms an association of the virtual terminal with the network through use of a multi-homing transport protocol such as SCTP, the association supporting the service by using the service ID. For service delivery, paging and handover purposes the devices of the virtual terminal are treated as a single entity by the TME.

  • Publication number: 20160323696
Abstract: In a wireless communication system, two cells (cell 1, cell 2) co-exist in the same time/frequency resources with the same Cell ID. The two cells are differentiated by one being a legacy cell and the other being a cell in which coverage extension by means of signal repetition is applied. There is a corresponding difference in broadcast control channels transmitted by a base station (11) providing the two cells, for example a difference in one or more of the contents of the PBCH, or the repetition factor on the PBCH, and/or a difference in a higher-level ID. The second cell is intended for machine type communication where coverage enhancement is required.

  • Publication number: 20160295503
Abstract: An access method of a device (10) such as an MTC device to a network (20, 30, 40) which allows the transmission of small data packets without the need to read all the System Information normally required to make an initial network access. The device (10) may notify the network that an access request is occurring from a device that was either specifically allowed to use a stored access configuration or is accessing the cell using modified system information being broadcast by the cell. Such notification may be implicit in the characteristics (choice of preamble, timing, frequency and/or repetition) of the access request. The network, preferably having knowledge of the method being used by the device to access the network, can either reject this access or accept it depending on whether the access was from a stored configuration or read from System Information.

  • Publication number: 20160183299
Abstract: A contention-free activation/deactivation mechanism in PRACH, which allows dynamic allocation of the contention-free and contention-based preambles. This allows contention-free preambles which have been allocated to a UE to be revoked once contention-free operation is no longer needed, or cannot be supported due to a shortage of preambles. In one embodiment, a terminal is configured (S12) with a contention-free preamble by specific signalling, and thereafter monitors periodic broadcasts (S14) indicating the set of contention-free preambles; if the configured preamble is within the set (S16, “Y”), the preamble is activated for contention-free operation (S18); otherwise (S16, “N”), the preamble is deactivated and the terminal should follow the contention-based procedure (S20).

  • Publication number: 20160182203
Abstract: In a LTE-based wireless communication system, a Demodulation Reference Symbol (DMRS) pattern is placed in Resource Element (RE) locations, reserved for Common Reference Symbol (CRS) ports. Various possibilities exist in the placement of DMRS in the CRS potential locations, depending on the number of CRS ports required, the number of REs required for DMRS in each cell, and the number of cells for which those DMRSs need to be orthogonal to reduce interference. The new DMRS pattern is orthogonal to the legacy DMRS patterns. This new pattern will reuse the CRS locations which may be reserved for CRS but not configured as CRSs in the Small cell environment. The new DMRS patterns will take up fewer REs in an LTE Resource Block (RB) than the current DMRS design and allows different REs to be used in neighbouring cells, using the same cell dependent frequency shifts as for CRS.

  • Patent number: 9357541
Abstract: A scheme for transmission of control channel information in a compact form intended to support SPS (Semi-Persistent Scheduling) in a wireless communication system. As applied to LTE, the scheme is to indicate a pre-configured UE-specific resource allocation in a Downlink Control Information (DCI) format containing information for multiple UEs in the same PDCCH. In order to avoid increasing the number of blind decodes, the DCI format size may be the same as an existing DCI format. Preferably the size of the new format is the same as that of DCI formats 0/1A/3/3A. The number of required bits per UE is minimized by signalling only one of a limited set of DCI messages per UE. The scheme provides a means for re-configuring SPS resources for multiple UEs using a single PDCCH transmission, while enabling better support for variable packet sizes and variable intervals between packets than currently defined SPS.

  • Publication number: 20160119945
Abstract: The invention provides for association of data streams (and/or logical channels) with individual carriers (cells), and independent buffer status reporting per carrier for terminals with more than one uplink carrier configured. In a “Small Cell” scenario for 3GPP LTE, a terminal may be simultaneously served by a macro cell and one or more small cells. These may operate at different frequencies, have different traffic loading and support different QoS (Quality of Service). The invention allows independent control of traffic on the uplinks to the macro cell and the small cells, which can be used to optimize the user experience in relation to the available resources at any given time/location, and allows particular data to be routed via particular cells.

  • Publication number: 20160073273
Abstract: A method for activation of a wireless communications link between a terminal (UE) and a first base station (SCeNB) under control of a second base station (MeNB), the method includes: the second base station (MeNB) sending a first activation request signal to the terminal (UE); and the terminal (UE), in response to the first activation request signal, sending a second activation request signal to the first base station (SCeNB). The terminal therefore acts as proxy for communicating an activation request from the second base station to the first base station. This is useful in Small Cell scenarios where backhaul latency may delay an activation request over the X2 interface between the base stations.

  • Publication number: 20150188680
Abstract: A buffer status reporting scheme for a terminal (10) wishing to transmit data simultaneously in multiple RATs of a wireless communication network, which enables the co-ordination of multiple base stations (12, 14) of different RATs (e.g. LTE eNB, UMTS base station, WiFi access point, etc.) with the assistance of the terminal (10) in order to achieve efficient radio resource scheduling for multi-RAT multi-flow aggregation in uplink. A radio bearer is configured for multi-RAT multi-flow aggregation by the network, and multiple logical channel IDs are assigned to this RB that may be associated with different RATs. Logical channels associated with a certain RAT (or a given set of RATs) may be grouped into one logical channel group for radio resource scheduling reason. The terminal (10) performs buffer status reporting, according to the configuration, on all involved RATs and sends reports/indications to one or more involved base stations (12.14).
