  • Publication number: 20050109918
Abstract: The present invention relates to curved focal plane arrays. More specifically, the present invention relates to a system and method for making solid-state curved focal plane arrays from standard and high-purity devices that may be matched to a given optical system. There are two ways to make a curved focal plane arrays starting with the fully fabricated device. One way, is to thin the device and conform it to a curvature. A second way, is to back-illuminate a thick device without making a thinned membrane. The thick device is a special class of devices; for example devices fabricated with high purity silicon. One surface of the device (the non VLSI fabricated surface, also referred to as the back surface) can be polished to form a curved surface.

  • Publication number: 20040237648
Abstract: Disclosed herein is an accelerometer and/or displacement device that uses a mass coupled to a rhomboidal flexure to provide compression to an optical sensing element preferably having a fiber Bragg grating (FBG). The transducer includes a precompressed optical sensor disposed along a first axis between sides of the flexure. The top portion of the flexure connects to the mass which intersects the flexure along a second axis perpendicular to the first axis. When the mass experiences a force due to acceleration or displacement, the flexure will expand or contract along the second axis, which respectively compresses or relieves the compression of the FBG in the optical sensing element along the first axis. Perturbing the force presented to the FBG changes its Bragg reflection wavelength, which is interrogated to quantify the dynamic or constant force.

  • Publication number: 20040182166
Abstract: A pressure transducer that uses a rhomboidal flexure to provide displacement amplification to an optical sensing element is disclosed. The transducer includes an optical sensor disposed between sides of the flexure. The top portion of the flexure connects to a displacement device, such as a bellows. A first pressure port provides a first pressure to the bellows. A second pressure, preferably greater than the first pressure, is ported into a housing containing the flexure, which tends to compress the bellows and pull apart or expand the flexure. Such expansion pinches or compresses the optical sensing element between the sides of the flexure, and in particular stresses an optical sensing element containing a fiber Bragg grating. Assessing the Bragg reflection wavelength of the grating allows the differential pressure to be determined, although the transducer can also be used to sense an absolute pressure.

  • Publication number: 20030194958
Abstract: Two counter-rotating, intermeshing, toothed wheels grind opposite sides of an interposed blade to create or burrlessly sharpen a knife-edge on the blade. The wheels can be solid or comprised of a fixed stack of toothed disks, concentrically aligned, the teeth of each succeeding disk angularly offset in a common direction from the teeth of the next preceding disk to create a wheel having a plurality of uniform, elongated composite teeth around the circumference of the stack, the teeth being angled from the wheel's axis. Two such wheels, one with teeth angled in an opposite direction, can be counter-rotated and because of the oppositely angled teeth, are capable of intermeshing. The degree of intermeshing can be selectively varied to correspondingly vary the sharpening angle. The apex ridges of both the solid and composite teeth can be selectively profiled to sharpen non-uniformly, e.g. serrating a blade edge.

  • Publication number: 20010049255
Abstract: Two counter-rotating, intermeshing, sharpening wheels simultaneously grind opposite sides of a blade edge to form a sharp, burrless knife-edge. Each wheel includes a stack of toothed disks, concentrically aligned, the teeth of each succeeding disk angularly offset in a common direction from the teeth of the next preceding disk to create a wheel having a plurality of uniform composite teeth, each oriented at an angle from the wheel's axis. A coating is applied to at least the apexes of the composite teeth to enhance their cutting ability. A pair of sharpening wheels, one with teeth aligned in the opposite direction, can be counter-rotated and because of the oppositely aligned teeth, are capable of intermeshing. Intermeshing can be varied, creating a range of included sharpening angles. The profile of the composite teeth can be shaped to various patterns, allowing a knife-edge to be sharpened in a variety of serrated fashions.

  • Patent number: 6162137
Abstract: A combination ball mark repair tool, golf club support and cigar cutter. The invention includes a prier for prying up ball marks which are depressions made particularly in golf greens by impacting golf balls. The prier includes a shank ending, in a pair of tines which are used to penetrate turf and pry up depressions in the turf. The prier is pivotally connected to an end of a handle for leverage, the handle defining a slot for retracting the prier. A push pin controls a detent which locks the shank in either a fully opened position or a fully retracted position. Depressing the push pin unlocks the shank. When the shank is unlocked, a torque spring urges the shank to pivot from its handle slot to its open position. The prier preferably has two tines to avoid damage to the turf. Inserting the tines into the turf at the edge of a ball mark and then pivoting the handle toward the surface causes the tines to raise the depressed turf, thereby repairing the ball mark.
