  • Patent number: 9886356
Abstract: Power line disturbance hold up times are dynamically adjusted based on battery capacity of a plurality of batteries in a plurality of racks by determining which one of the plurality of racks has a fewest number of remaining batteries of the plurality of batteries having the battery capacity. A determination of an amount of the power line disturbance the one of the plurality of racks, having the fewest number of remaining batteries of the plurality of batteries with the battery capacity, is able to support.

  • Patent number: 9858012
Abstract: A read/write ratio for each of a plurality of data segments classified in a hot category as hot data segments is determined. Each of the plurality of hot data segments is ordered by the read/write ratio in a descending order. Each of a plurality of available SSD devices is ordered by a remaining life expectancy in an ascending order. Those of the plurality of hot data segments are matched with those of the plurality of hot data segments with those of the plurality of available SSD devices such that a hot data segment having a higher read/write ratio is provided to an SSD device having a smaller remaining life expectancy than another hot data segment having a lower read/write ratio.

  • Patent number: 9842016
Abstract: In one aspect, multiple data path error collection is provided in a storage management system. In one embodiment, an error condition in a main data path between the storage controller and at least one of a host and a storage unit is detected, and in response, a sequence of error data collection operations to collect error data through a main path is initiated. In response to a failure to collect error data at a level of the sequential error data collection operations, error data is collected through an alternate data path as a function of the error data collection level at which the failure occurred. Other aspects are described.

  • Publication number: 20170351440
Abstract: A secondary storage controller determines one or more tracks of one or more volumes in which data loss has occurred in the secondary storage controller. The secondary storage controller suspends a peer to peer remote copy operation between the secondary storage controller and a primary storage controller. Information on the one or more tracks of the one or more volumes in which the data loss has occurred is transmitted to the primary storage controller.

  • Publication number: 20170315850
Abstract: For efficient data system error recovery, an error threshold is dynamically adjusted from a default error threshold to one of a plurality of error threshold values comprising at least high threshold values, medium threshold values, and low threshold values, for a particular error associated with an event object indicating a responsive action for handling the particular error in a data system. The responsive action to the event object comprises determining whether the error threshold needs to be adjusted for the particular error, and if it is determined the error threshold for the particular error does not need adjustment, the default error threshold is used.

  • Patent number: 9760500
Abstract: A method includes determining to move an extent from a source-tier in a storage system to a destination-tier in the storage system, wherein a set of tracks of the extent is presently being accessed. In response to determining that a parameter of the extent exceeds a migration threshold, a destination-tier cache is populated with tracks as they are removed from a read-stack associated with the source-tier and/or a write-stack associated with the source-tier using a predetermined read-to-write ratio.

  • Patent number: 9703619
Abstract: Provided are a computer program product, system, and method for determining an availability score based on available resources of different resource types in a storage system to determine whether to perform a failure operation for the storage system. Information is maintained indicating availability of a plurality of storage system resources for a plurality of resource types. An availability score is calculated as a function of a number of available resources of the resource types. Information on the availability score is transmitted to a failure manager. The failure manager uses the transmitted availability information to determine whether to initiate a storage system failure mode for the storage system.

  • Patent number: 9698614
Abstract: Provided are a computer program product, system, and method for adjusting an extended power line disruption time and end-of-life for at least one battery backup unit used in a system. A request is received to change from a first extended power line disruption time currently used in the system to a second extended power line disruption time. • Publication number: 20170052724
Abstract: A determination is made as to whether a plurality of storage volumes controlled by a processor complex are secondary storage volumes that are in an asynchronous copy relationship with a plurality of primary storage volumes. A storage device timeout value for a storage device that stores the plurality of storage volumes is changed from a predetermined low value to a predetermined high value, wherein the predetermined high value is indicative of a greater duration of time than the predetermined low value, in response to determining that each of the plurality of storage volumes controlled by the processor complex and stored in the storage device are secondary storage volumes that are in the asynchronous copy relationship with the plurality of primary storage volumes.

  • Patent number: 9569376
Abstract: A storage controller determines a presence of an indication from an Input/Output (I/O) enclosure that the I/O enclosure will perform a shutdown after a predetermined amount of time. The storage controller determines whether the I/O enclosure provides a last path to data stored in a storage device. A request is transmitted to the I/O enclosure to perform either an orderly shutdown or abort the shutdown, based on the whether the I/O enclosure provides the last path to the data stored in the storage device.

  • Patent number: 9552263
Abstract: A method for dynamically changing system recovery actions based on system load. The method includes measuring a value of a workload characteristic of a computer system over a period of time, detecting an error in the computer system, determining a workload level of the computer system, and selecting a set of error recovery actions in response to the system workload analysis module determining the workload level of the computer system. A workload characteristic defines a type of work performed by the computer system. A workload level can be based on user defined parameters or a measurement of the value of one or more workload characteristics.

  • Publication number: 20160378339
Abstract: A method for reducing stress on a RAID under rebuild is disclosed herein. In one embodiment, such a method includes performing the following actions while the RAID is undergoing a rebuild process: (1) redirect writes intended for the RAID to a temporary storage area located on a same primary storage system as the RAID, and (2) redirect reads intended for the RAID to a secondary storage system configured to store a copy of data in the RAID. The method is further configured to perform the following actions upon completing the rebuild process: (3) update the rebuilt RAID to reflect writes made to the temporary storage area during the rebuild process, and (2) redirect reads and writes to the rebuilt RAID. A corresponding system and computer program product are also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 9519435
Abstract: Extent migration is provided in a data storage environment configured for synchronous replication between a primary and secondary pair of storage entities, each having tiered storage devices. In one embodiment, by way of example only, a migration instruction is sent, by the primary storage entity, to the secondary storage entity, the migration instruction including a time delta approximately equal to a time of an intended migration at the primary storage entity such that the primary and secondary storage entities conduct the extent migration at approximately a same time. A relative priority is used against a secondary ordered heat map of the tiered storage devices of the secondary storage entity to perform the extent migration, regardless of whether the primary and secondary storage entities are identical.
