  • Patent number: 8413226
Abstract: A system, method, and apparatus in an access network such as the Generic Access Network (GAN) for providing user-type information to a Security Gateway (SEGW) or for enabling the SEGW to obtain user-type information for different user types so that the SEGW can apply specific security functions based on the user type. The invention may also provide user-type information to a controller node such as a GAN Controller (GANC) or may enable the GANC to obtain user-type information for application of security settings toward GAN-clients. An Authentication, Authorization and Accounting (AAA) Server may create a user-type indication internally, or may obtain an indication from a Home Location Register and forward the indication to the SEGW. The SEGW may forward the indication to the GANC, or the GANC may determine the user-type information internally or retrieve it from a database.

  • Patent number: 8401553
Abstract: A method and radio network controller (RNC) in a radio access network (RAN) for controlling access to a cellular telecommunication system. Upon receiving an access request from a given user equipment (UE) through a given radio base station (RBS), the RNC retrieves authorization information from an access control database within the RAN. The authorization information indicates whether the given UE is authorized to access the system through the given RBS. The RNC alternatively grants access or denies access to the UE based on the retrieved authorization information. The RBS is particularly useful for controlling access through small cells with limited capacity.

  • Publication number: 20130035066
Abstract: A method, a Network Node and a machine is provided, wherein the machine initially is not provided with an identity which is valid for communication with the communication network. According to the method, the network receives an Activation Request (140, 352, 452, 552, 652) from a User Equipment (320, 420, 520, 620), which User Equipment has an identity which is valid in the communication network and which User Equipment is authenticated in the communication network, the Activation Request comprising a machine identity for the machine. An identity which is valid in said communication network for said machine is obtained (160, 354, 454, 555, 655) on the basis of the Activation Request being received from a User Equipment having a valid identity and being authenticated in the communication network. The obtained identity is transmitted (170, 360, 461, 564, 662) to the machine for enabling the machine to subsequently authenticate itself in one or more communication networks using the obtained identity.

  • Publication number: 20130010606
Abstract: A method for operation and maintenance of Access Points in a wireless communications network, and a network node and an access point for use in such a network. Access points are used for connecting wireless networks to core networks. The method comprises the step of first receiving, at a network node, an on-demand triggered request for status information, wherein the request includes an access point identity. The network node investigates, using the received access point identity, if the access point is registered. If the access point is registered, then the network node uses the access point identity to retrieve access point address information. The network node uses the retrieved address information to establish a connection with the access point. Thereafter the network node receives access point status information.

  • Patent number: 8275376
Abstract: In cellular mobile networks handover between base stations of adjacent cells requires the identity, address and frequency of all adjacent cells to be known to other elements of the network. Conventional networks can be extended by the addition of unlicensed-radio access networks. These include an access network controller (303) preferably connected via a broadband network (302) to a plurality of low-power local base stations (301), which communicate with mobile stations (1) over an unlicensed radio interface. The number and changing location of the local base station renders the operation and maintenance required to enable handover from the conventional network to these access networks prohibitively complex. This difficulty is alleviated by assigning the whole access network a single identifier. With this arrangement regardless of which base station mini-cell (304) an active call is being handed-over to, the conventional network will be able to route the request to the access network controller.

  • Patent number: 8254313
Abstract: When a mobile station (MS) seeks access to a public land mobile network (PLMN) via an unlicensed or generic access networks (GAN) it first registers with a default GAN. If the default GAN is unable to serve the MS at its current location, it redirects the MS to other GANs serving the same of different PLMNs. However, when using the existing registration and redirection process, an MS has no means of knowing what services are provided by a specific combination of GAN and PLMN. In accordance with the present invention this is achieved by indicating for each PLMN and serving GANC an operation mode supported by the GANC. This operation mode being indicative of the interface used for communication between the GANC and PLMN it serves.

  • Patent number: 8249594
Abstract: The present invention provides a method and architecture on how mobile stations (MS) are provisioned about information of an unlicensed mobile access (UMA) network controller (UNC). The UNC in accordance with the present invention provides three different logical roles (i.e., provisioning, default and serving). More specifically, the present invention provides a method for assigning a mobile station (MS) to an unlicensed mobile access (UMA) network controller (UNC) in an unlicensed mobile access network (UMAN). The MS is connected to a provisioning UNC and discovers a default UNC. A serving UNC is then determined to assign the MS to and the MS is assigned to the serving UNC. The serving UNC can be the default UNC, the provisioning UNC or another UNC.

  • Patent number: 8244257
Abstract: A method for a cellular network (100) comprising cells (110) of a first kind controlled by corresponding base stations (111), and cells (120-122) of a second kind controlled by corresponding base stations (125-127). The second kind of cells are smaller than the first kind of cells (110). The network (100) comprises functions (140) for control of the base stations, and functions (150) for handing over the control of user terminals (123, 112) between base stations. The method is used when a call in a cell of the second kind (120-122) is handed over to a base station of the first kind. The method lets said control function (140) of the base station of the cell of the second kind send identifying information to the control function (140) of the base station (111) of the first kind, such that if the call is to be handed back to the original base station (125-127), the original base station can be found by the network.
