  • Publication number: 20140293802
Abstract: Mobile broadband traffic has been exploding in wireless networks resulting in an increase of interferences and reduced operator control. Networks are also becoming more heterogeneous putting additional demand in interference management. Scheduler schedules uplink transmissions from UEs based on a load prediction algorithm that typically assumes worst case. However, UEs do not always use full power granted, and thus, much of granted radio resources are wasted. To address these and other issues, technique(s) to accurately predict/estimate other cell interferences and thermal noise separately and to accurately predict/estimate load utilization probability and variance is(are) described. Inventive estimation technique(s) can be used to schedule UEs to more fully utilize available radio resources, e.g., in TD-scheduling operations. Extended Kalman filtering can be adapted for use in estimation providing low order computational complexity.

  • Publication number: 20140248906
Abstract: A method of reporting hidden sector information from a base station node in a wireless communication system. The base station node has an internal multi-sector structure that is hidden from the rest of the system. The hidden sector information has sector information of the multi-sector structure is only internally available in the base station node. Enhanced cell-ID measurements associated with a first user equipment communicating with the base station are obtained, and formatted into information elements of a measurement report, each such information element having a plurality of symbols. Subsequently, hidden sector information for the first user equipment is retrieved and has an indication of an antenna sector of the base station in which the first user equipment is located. The retrieved dormant/latent sector information uses at least one selected symbol of the plurality of symbols of the measurement report to provide a transformed measurement report.

  • Patent number: 8787858
Abstract: A method for determining the noise floor in a receiver includes sorting received estimated values of the noise floor by time bins in a time cycle, determining and storing the average value of the received values in each time bin for a previous time cycle, and determining a scale factor for each time bin in the current time cycle by dividing the average value of each time bin in the previous time cycle by the smallest average value of the time bins in the previous time cycle. The division for time bin k in the previous time cycle is used as scale factor for time bin k in the current time cycle. A compensated noise floor power level for each time bin in the current time cycle may be determined by applying the scale factor of the current time bin to the currently received estimated value.

  • Patent number: 8768289
Abstract: One aspect of the present invention extends the number of client and/or service types used in location-based services. The extension provides richer definitions for use in selecting the optimal or otherwise best suited positioning sequences to be used in fulfilling given positioning requests. For example, some types of commercial-related positioning requests are better satisfied with quicker-but-lower-accuracy position determinations, while other types benefit from more-accurate-but-slower position determinations. These and other benefits are provided by extending the type definitions used to identify commercial positioning requests. For example, a UE may be configured to send positioning requests that indicate the extended client or service types.

  • Patent number: 8768378
Abstract: A method of enabling reporting of high precision position determination data in a cellular communication system includes detecting two different cell polygons, each representative of a geographical location of a respective cluster of high precision position determinations in response to a positioning request, joining the two different cell polygons to form a merged cell polygon by selectively joining a respective outer perimeter of each of the polygons to minimize a resulting merged cell polygon area while maintaining a number of corners of the merged cell polygon below a predetermined threshold, and reporting the merged cell polygon to a network node to provide position determination data originating from the two different cell polygons as the single merged cell polygon.

  • Patent number: 8755816
Abstract: A scaling apparatus and method scales uncertainty criteria (horizontal and vertical accuracy requirements) originally received from an end user before the uncertainty criteria is sent on to a wireless terminal (30) as requirements on the accuracy of location positioning performed by/for the wireless terminal. In an example embodiment the amount/degree of scaling is selected according to a configured best estimate of the confidence and uncertainty relation, and such best estimate can be based on the majority of the terminals of the network. For a WCDMA radio access network (RAN) case the scaling can be performed in a radio network controller (RNC). For a Long Term Evolution (LTE) radio access network (RAN) case the scaling can be performed in the evolved Serving Mobile Location Center (eSMLC) node. In another case the scaling can alternatively be performed in the wireless terminal itself.

  • Patent number: 8744481
Abstract: Method and arrangement in a first node for providing geographical position related information. The first node and a second node are comprised within a wireless communication system. The first node and the second node are adapted to exchange wireless signals. The method comprises receiving a signal from the second node. Apart of the received signal that has propagated through a first channel path from the second node is detected by using a circular correlator. A timing estimate associated with the propagation time of the part of the signal which is received over the first channel path from the second node is calculated. Thus the calculated timing estimate is provided, which timing estimate is to be used when determining the geographical position.

  • Patent number: 8731579
Abstract: The position of a mobile device served in a cell of a serving node of a wireless communication network is estimated by estimating an angle-of-arrival (AoA) between the mobile device and the serving node based on a precoding matrix indicator (PMI) determined for the serving node in a downlink direction or for the mobile device in an uplink direction. Also estimated is the AoA between the mobile device and a non-serving neighbor node of the wireless communication network based on a PMI determined for the neighbor node in the downlink direction or for the mobile device in the uplink direction. The downlink and/or uplink AoA estimation can be further enhanced by employing interference cancellation in the mobile device and in the radio node, respectively. The position of the mobile device is estimated based on the estimated AoAs.

  • Patent number: 8670478
Abstract: An arrangement (10) for noise rise estimation comprises a front end signal conditioning arrangement (9) and an interference whitener (14) connected thereto. The interference whitener (10) is arranged for providing interference whitening of a front end signal. A processor (20) is arranged for measuring received total wideband power received at the front end signal conditioning arrangement (9) a plurality of times. An estimate of a noise floor measure is computed by the processor (20) based on the measured received total wideband powers. The processor (20) determines an equivalent total wideband power of the output from the interference whitener (14). The processor (20) also calculates a noise rise measure, based on the equivalent total wideband power and the noise floor measure, and compensates the noise rise measure for the interference whitening. A digital receiver (12) is connected to the output from the interference whitener (14).

  • Patent number: 8665937
Abstract: A method for noise rise estimation in a wireless communication system comprises receiving (210) of radio signals. An interference whitening (212) is performed. A useful signal power for a first user after the interference whitening is determined (214) for a plurality of time instances. Furthermore, a first user noise floor compensation factor is derived (216) based on combining weights for the first user used in the interference whitening. A probability distribution for a compensated useful signal power for the first user is estimated (218). A conditional probability distribution of a noise floor measure is computed (220). A noise rise measure for the first user is then calculated (222) based at least on the compensated useful signal power for the first user and the conditional probability distribution of a noise floor measure.
