  • Patent number: 6982852
Abstract: A magnetic disk drive having a high recording density and enabling high speed transfer is achieved by reducing vibration of a carriage arm assembly to reduce a positioning error. The disk drive is configured so that a carriage arm is configured by two arm portions, the arm portions being coupled to each other by a restraint member through a viscoelastic material, the restraint member being supported on a carriage body or an area of the carriage arm in the vicinity of the body by means of adhesion or a viscoelastic material. By providing a high damping effect against various vibration modes in which in-plane bending and out-plane bending of the carriage arm are generated, vibration of the carriage arm assembly is suppressed, so that the positioning error is reduced, thereby the magnetic disk drive having a high recording density can be achieved.

  • Publication number: 20050231850
Abstract: A magnetic disk drive is to be provided wherein oscillations in thrust, conical and translational modes of a spindle caused by disturbance are to be damped to diminish a positioning error and thereby attain a high recording density and improved accessing performance. In one embodiment, there is provided a compensation circuit using acceleration or angular acceleration sensors, the sensors being disposed on a base, a cover or a PCB (printed circuit board) of a magnetic disk drive so that they can detect disturbance effectively, and wherein a mechanical system transfer characteristic of and other parameters in thrust, conical, or translational mode of a spindle are acquired or calculated by a processor and unnecessary oscillation in each mode is compensated. In another embodiment, to measure a transfer characteristic of the spindle in thrust mode and other parameters after installation of the magnetic disk drive in a case, piezoelectric elements are provided as one of oscillating means.

  • Patent number: 6879467
Abstract: According to the invention, there is provided a carriage arm assembly including a carriage arm having two arm members. The arm member is constructed in such a way that the width of its coil side end and the width of its suspension side end are narrower than that of its intermediate area. This construction widens a servo band width, improves positioning accuracy, and reduces positioning errors of a magnetic disk apparatus, so that recording density is improved and storage capacity is increased. Further, by coupling two arm members using a restriction member via a visco-elastic member, it is possible to achieve a high damping effect on various vibration modes including in-plane bending of the arms, and suppress vibration of the carriage so as to reduce the positioning errors.

  • Patent number: 6462910
Abstract: In magnetic disk structures having a high density, positioning errors (generally referred to as “flutter error”) occur due to a fluctuation of a magnetic disk. As a result, reading precision deteriorates. This is a significant problem in realizing a large capacity for a magnetic disk apparatus. This can be resolved by providing a magnetic apparatus such that a suspension which holds a slider having a magnetic head at one end and which is attached to a supporting arm at the other end is inclined so that an interval between the suspension and the magnetic disk is small on the inner rim side and is large on the outer rim side with this arrangement, the occurrence of the positioning error due to the fluctuation of a deformation of the magnetic disk is reduced, thereby enabling a high density recording of the magnetic disk.

  • Patent number: 5930082
Abstract: When a slider slides on a recording medium and a frictional force acts on the slider, an unstable vibration resulting from falling forward of the slider and a local stress are prevented from being generated. An attitude of the slider is stabilized, and the slider is kept in a steady contact with a disc. A rotary support mechanism is constituted by successively connecting one deformable portion, one rigid portion and another deformable portion to an upstream side of another rigid portion with a slider attached thereto in a recording medium movement direction. The another deformable portion is bonded to a support arm. While a predetermined pressing load is given to the slider by a spring portion, an intersection of an extension of a virtual line connecting the one and another deformable portions with the surface of the recording medium is positioned on the upstream side of a sliding point of the slider on the recording medium in the recording medium movement direction.

  • Patent number: 5923494
Abstract: There is provided a magnetic tape device capable of highly accurate positioning at a high speed. For this purpose, the head is driven in the direction of the width of the tape by eliminating the friction between the tape the head. In order to allow positioning in the direction of the width of the tape, even if a servo signal cannot be read from a servo track, the absolute position of the head from a reference position is detected, and the head is controlled based on the absolute position.
