  • Patent number: 5714967
Abstract: An image display apparatus designed so that the observer can view the image of an image display device without the need of manually adjusting the positional relationship between the observer's eyeball and a bundle of rays from the image display device which is to be projected into the eyeball. A positional relationship detecting section (46) observes the pupil of an observer's eyeball (44) and its vicinities, and detects where a bundle of rays from an LCD (42) is being projected. If it is detected that the ray bundle is not coincident with the pupil, motors (52a and 52b) are driven to move a first support (50a) and a second support (50b), which support the LCD (42), a backlight (43), and an ocular lens (45), so that the ray bundle passes through the pupil.

  • Patent number: 5572343
Abstract: A head-mounted see-through display which enables an outside image and an electronic image to be selectively observed by making a liquid crystal shutter transparent or opaque. To eliminate the problem that during the observation of the electronic image the outside image is undesirably seen through the peripheral region of the electronic image, display light from a two-dimensional display device (11) is first transmitted by a half-mirror (12), and the transmitted light is reflected by a concave mirror (13). Then, the reflected light is reflected by the half-mirror (12) so as to be led to the observer's eye as an enlarged image. To prevent the outside light from entering the eye through the half-mirror (12) during the observation of the electronic image, a negative or positive type TN or STN liquid crystal shutter (10) is disposed in front of the half-mirror (12).

  • Patent number: 5473365
Abstract: A head-mounted image display apparatus which is capable of selectively displaying images of normal and wide sizes efficiently by utilizing approximately all the pixels of a display device without the need of removing an optical system and which provides a bright image at high resolution and is easy to handle. The head-mounted image display apparatus has an image display device (2) for displaying an image, and a projection optical system for projecting the image displayed on the image display device (2) onto an observer's eye. The projection optical system includes an anamorphic optical system which is composed of an anamorphic lens (3) and a cylindrical lens (4), for example. The anamorphic optical system is rotatable about the optical axis. Accordingly, it is possible to selectively observe two images of the normal and wide sizes by rotating the anamorphic optical system about the optical axis through 90.degree. in either direction.
