    Abstract: To improve the productivity of the cold rolling facility by providing the cold rolling facility with a strip wiper free of dust and foreign matters suitable for high-speed rolling. The wiping ability was greatly improved by floating and supporting the wiper roll by the static pressure bearing of air of two-pocket type, and by variably adjusting the load range of the floating force in response to the plate width. At high-speed rolling exceeding 700 m/min which was incapable with the conventional roll wiper or tube wiper, the productivity of the cold rolling facility and the surface quality of the strip were greatly improved by applying to the cold rolling facility the wiping device whose wiping ability is equal to or better than the tube wiper at low speeds, and its effect is very large.

    Abstract: A work roll cross type rolling mill comprises a pair of work rolls and a pair of back-up rolls for backing up the work rolls. The back-up rolls are so arranged that their axes can be inclined within horizontal planes only to three or four specific angular positions. The work rolls are allowed to be inclined within horizontal planes with respect to the back-up rolls such that the axes of the work rolls cross the axes of the associated back-up rolls and cross each other. The nip between each the work roll and the associated back-up roll is lubricated so as to reduce axial thrust generated therebetween due to the crossing of the rolls. The cross angle between the work rolls is set and controlled during rolling operation only when the roll peripheral speed or the rolling speed is 50 m/min or higher.

    Abstract: A multi-high rolling mill is disclosed which includes an upper work roll backed by an intermediate roll and a backup roll and a lower work roll backed up by a single backup roll. Control benders are provided on each of the intermediate roll and the upper and lower work rolls. In order to optimize the control of the rolling operation for skinpass rolling and the like, the control benders for the upper work roll and the intermediate backup roll are controlled so as to effect a control of the crown sheet over the entire width of the material being rolled, while the control bender for the lower work roll controls the sheet crown of the rolled material at the lateral side end portions, resulting in a composite control substantially improving the sheet quality and preventing edge wrinkles in the material being rolled. In the disclosed embodiments, the intermediate roll has a larger drum length than a predetermined maximum sheet width of rolled material to be rolled by the work roll.

    Abstract: By rolling a slab with a thickness of 80 mm or less in a plant including a continuous casting machine and a hot strip rolling mill directly combined with each other, low-speed rolling can be achieved while suppressing a drop of the strip temperature and the occurrence of scales. After a slab 2 cast by a continuous casting machine 1 and being 80 mm or less thick is heated and descaled, it is rough-rolled into a bar with a thickness of 20 to 60 mm by a roughing mill 7 constructed as a 4H-twin mill. After being heated and descaled again, the bar is finish-rolled by finishing mills 19 to 21, each of which employs small-diameter work rolls having a diameter not larger than 500 mm, into a thin plate with a thickness in the range of 1.6 mm to 15 mm or a thick plate with a thickness in the range of 3 mm to 40 mm.

    Abstract: A lubricant is supplied from headers of lubricant supply units onto surfaces of back-up rolls at locations spaced from contact positions between a pair of work rolls and a pair of back-up rolls. The headers each include a lubricant spray nozzle for spraying the lubricant under a pressure not lower than 3 kg/cm.sup.2, a header cover for confining the lubricant sprayed from the lubricant spray nozzle, an oil return line for returning the surplus lubricant, and seal members made of flexible material such as rubber. The work rolls are provided with water wiping plates, and the back-up rolls are also provided with water wiping plates. In a work rolls crossing type mill thus arranged, water films of cooling water deposited on the roll surfaces are removed to prevent the cooling water from mixing into the lubricant. Even if the water films are not totally removed, it is possible to surely plate out the lubricant for reliably lubricating between the work rolls and the back-up rolls.

    Abstract: A coating system and method of using same for coating a hot rolling strip coil, such as zinc coating of steel strip, is disclosed. The coating system includes sequentially arranged coil uncoilers, a strip welder, a pickling tank, a heating and deoxidizing furnace, a coating pot, and a coiler. A rolling mill with at least one cold rolling mill stand is interposed between the pickling tank and the heating and deoxidizing furnace. In certain operations with hot rolling strip coil having a larger than desired thickness, the cold rolling mill is operated to reduce the strip material thickness. In operations where the strip material is of proper desired thickness, the strip material is passed through the cold rolling mill without carrying out cold rolling. The system and method accommodate a single coating line usable with a wide variety of hot rolled strip material and finish coated material thicknesses.
