  • Publication number: 20120002656
Abstract: System and method for seamless roaming over scalable wide area Wireless LAN networks (WAWLAN) with clientless mobile subscribers. A preferred embodiment comprises a wireless gateway (WG) coupled to one or more access points in a wireless network to form a wireless cluster (WC), a network access gateway (NAG) coupled to a wired network, and a switch coupled to the WG and the NAG. Each wireless cluster is a Wireless LAN Network (WLAN) with homogenous or heterogeneous network architecture. The WG detects mobile nodes in a wireless cluster and tracks mobile node location in the wireless cluster. The NAG is an anchor point for mobile nodes in the WAWLAN and maintains a fixed source of information about each mobile node regardless of their mobility. The switch provides connectivity between the NAG and the WG. Seamless roaming across Wireless LAN network boundary by mobile subscribers without requiring special mobility enabling client software.

  • Publication number: 20110292859
Abstract: A system is disclosed for performing a mobile station handover while continuing a multicast and broadcast service (MCBCS). The system includes a transceiver module transmitting from the mobile station multicast and broadcast service (MBS) zone criteria, including a list of one or more potential target base stations, to a serving base station, if a target base station is not in the same MBS zone as the serving base station. A handover request is made to one or more of the potential target base stations from the serving base station, determined based on the MBS zone criteria, where the MBS zone criteria includes an MCBCS continuity policy of the mobile station. A target base station is then selected, from the list of one or more potential target base stations, that satisfies the MBS zone criteria, and a handover process is performed to the target base station.

  • Patent number: 7965738
Abstract: A system and method for adaptively managing frame size in a wireless multihop network (100) is disclosed. In one embodiment, a packet is transmitted from a source to a destination (420). A acknowledgement packet (422) is received and a successful acknowledgement packet counter is incremented if the acknowledgement packet arrives prior to a time-out of a timer (444). A frame size is increased if the successful acknowledgement packet counter reaches a specified value (446, 448). If the acknowledgement packet arrives after the time-out of the timer, the successful acknowledgement packet counter (460) is reset and the frame size (462) is decreased. These procedures can be repeated until the frame size is greater than or equal to a maximum frame size (450) or less than or equal to a minimum frame size (464).

  • Patent number: 7623448
Abstract: The invention provides various schemes for negotiating communications between wireless mesh network nodes operating in accordance with the IEEE 802.11e standard. However, more generally, the invention can be operated in accordance with other communication standards. According to a broad embodiment of the invention, a method is provided in which meeting durations are divided into at least two portions, an uplink transmission portion and a downlink transmission portion. In order to protect the negotiation packets from collisions, the negotiation process is combined with the uplink and downlink data transmissions. In some aspects of the invention, the negotiation process is protected from collisions by using the transmission opportunity (TXOP) protocol that is available in the IEEE 802.11e standard. The inventive methods can be used with a contention based protocol or a contention free based protocol.

  • Publication number: 20090109890
Abstract: A system and method for supporting multicast and broadcast service (MBS) on one or more separate carrier frequencies are provided. The system includes carrier frequency information to indicate that data in an MBS zone resides on a separate carrier, and to direct the subscriber stations to receive MBS data on the separate carrier. The method comprises establishing an MBS MAC connection between a subscriber station and a base station in a MBS zone, processing carrier frequency information to determine whether data associated with the MBS zone resides on a separate carrier, and if so, transmitting the MBS data on the separate carrier.
