  • Patent number: 6029632
Abstract: In a fuel injector for direct fuel injection into a cylinder of an internal combustion engine under the control of an electromagnetic valve, wherein an injector housing has a control piston and a valve body disposed in a cylindrical opening formed therein whereby the high pressure fuel supply to a nozzle valve at one end of the injector is controlled, the valve body forms a valve whose downstream end is in communication, by way of a throttle structure, with a low pressure fuel return line through whichfuel under pressure can be released, the discharge of fuel from the downstream end of the valve body to the return line being further controlled such that fuel can be discharged to the fuel return line only when the nozzle valve is closed.

  • Patent number: 6027047
Abstract: In a magnetic valve controlled fuel injector for a storage fuel injection system of a multi-cylinder internal combustion engine wherein the injector includes an upper housing part with a control piston, a lower housing part with a valve piston, a nozzle body with a spring loaded needle valve, and a fuel supply passage extending through the lower housing part to the valve piston and through the valve and control pistons to a control chamber from which fuel can be released under the control of a magnetic valve disposed on top of the upper housing part. The fuel supply passage further extends from the valve piston to a pressure chamber around the nozzle needle which when unseated by opening the magnetic control valve permits ejection of fuel from the pressure chamber. The valve and control piston which are disposed in the lower and respectively, upper housing parts are disposed in engagement with each other in the area of the jointure of the upper and the lower housing parts.

  • Patent number: 5975056
Abstract: In a process for regulating the injection quantities of injectors which are fluidically connected with a common pressure line in a common-rail injection system of an internal-combustion engine, a fuel pump provides fuel in the pressure line under a static nominal pressure. Control signals for opening and closing within individual injection periods for achieving respective identical injection quantities are supplied to the injectors by a regulator unit. In the case of different flow rates of the individual injectors respective identical injection quantities are achieved by the regulator unit by changing the respective injection period on the basis of a measuring signal. For this purpose, a pressure gauge inserted into the pressure line generates a measuring signal from a measurement of the static measuring pressure in the pressure line in each case after the closing of an injector.

  • Patent number: 5954032
Abstract: A control for an injection system of a multicylinder internal combustion engine has a high pressure pump connected to a distributor element provided with outlet openings from which branch lines lead separately to groups of injection valves. The distributor element has first and second spring biased pistons that are operable to block selectively fuel to the branch lines, each of the pistons having a throttle point situated therein. When a major leak develops downstream from the distributor element, the branch line in which the leak has occurred is automatically shut off by the associated piston in the distributor element, due to the imbalance in pressure which results. When a minor leak develops, one of the branch lines is automatically closed by a control unit shutting off the injection valves associated with the other branch line, while the high pressure pump continues to deliver for at least one operating cycle.

  • Patent number: 5941215
Abstract: In a fuel injection system for a multi-cylinder internal combustion engine with magnetic valve controlled direct injection fuel injectors of which each includes a housing having an injection nozzle with a nozzle needle biased into a closed position by a spring disposed in a spring chamber, and a magnetic valve controlled control piston having a valve structure at one end for controlling high pressure fuel admission to a fuel supply passage leading to the needle nozzle, the spring chamber is in communication with the fuel supply passage by a communication passage including a throttle structure permitting limited fuel flow to the spring chamber such that, upon failure of the injector resulting in a continuous pressurization of the fuel supply passage, the pressure in the spring chamber builds up to seat the nozzle needle thereby interrupting fuel ejection from the injector.

  • Patent number: 5868111
Abstract: In a fuel injection control system for a multi-cylinder internal combustion engine including a high pressure fuel pump for supplying fuel under pressure to the fuel injection valves of the various cylinders through a distribution line including a fuel distribution element dividing the fuel supply to two groups of fuel injection valves, the fuel distribution element includes a piston disposed in a cylinder and adapted to interrupt fuel flow to any one of the two groups in which a leak occurs such that fuel supply to the other group of fuel injection valves can be maintained for an emergency operation of the engine. If small leaks are detected by the electronic engine operating control, the valves of one of the groups are momentarily deactivated to cause the distribution element to interrupt the fuel supply to the other group of fuel injection valves.

  • Patent number: 5727516
Abstract: In a method of controlling the operation of an internal combustion engine with fuel injection by way of a common high pressure (common rail) fuel supply line to which high pressure fuel is supplied by a high pressure fuel pump and from which fuel is admitted to the various cylinders of the internal combustion engine by valve controlled fuel injection nozzles, the fuel pressure in the common fuel supply line between the end of an injection and the start of a fuel supply period is monitored at distinct timely spaced measurement points and, if a pressure difference between the measurement points is sensed in excess of a predetermined limit value indicating an injector malfunction, the high pressure fuel supply to the common fuel supply line is interrupted by deactivating the high pressure fuel pump while fuel injection through the operative nozzles is maintained so as to rapidly reduce the pressure in the common fuel supply line.
