  • Publication number: 20080018027
Abstract: A system for cooling a hot rail of rail steel to a fine perlitic or ferritic or perlitic/ferritic structure has a plurality of separate cooling modules with independently adjustable cooling parameters. The rail is guided downstream through the modules of the cooling stretch and through intermediate zones between the modules so as to cool the surface of the rail in each of the modules and to subject the rail to destressing or stress relief between the modules. Sensors in each of the intermediate zones detect the actual surface temperature of the rail in the respective zones, and a controller connected to the modules and to the sensors varies the cooling parameters of the cooling modules in dependence on the detected temperatures in the respective upstream zones to ensure a defined temperature in the rail that lies above a critical temperature at which bainitic structure components are formed.

  • Publication number: 20070138334
Abstract: A water box for a wire-rolling mill has a lower support and a lower plate carried on the lower support, extending horizontally below a path of a wire moving in a travel direction, and formed with an upwardly open groove extending parallel to and open toward the path. An upper support carries an upper plate formed with a straight groove. Respective upper and lower guide bars seated in the grooves of the upper and lower plates are formed with respective straight channels open away from the respective plates. A hinge connected between the supports permits movement of the upper plate between a closed position closely juxtaposed with the lower plate and with the channels confronting each other and forming a passage surrounding the path and an open position spaced upward away from the lower plate. In the closed position the wire is transversely enclosed by the channels.

  • Publication number: 20060191661
Abstract: The invention relates to a continuous casting mold for casting molten metals, particularly steel materials, at high casting rates to form polygonal billet, bloom, and preliminary section castings (1) and the like. Said mold is comprised of a tubular mold (2) made of copper or of copper alloys whose entry cross-section (3) on the pouring-in side (4) has both a cross-section (5), which is enlarged compared to the exit cross-section (6) on the casting exit side (7), and corner radii (8). The continuous casting mold can be improved in a technologically process-oriented manner with regard to requirements concerning the cooling processes. To this end, the inner geometric cross-sectional shape (9) and the associated dimensions (10) are provided so that they are analogous to the amount of solidification heat, which is capable of being locally dissipated, at a chosen casting rate and are analogous to the extension of the tubular mold (2).

  • Patent number: 6776217
Abstract: In a method for continuous casting bars, billets, and slabs from a melt in dimensional ranges of approximately 20 to 150 mm thickness and approximately 600 to 3500 mm width by means of an oscillating, water-cooled casting mold in cooperation with a submerged-entry nozzle and by employing casting powder for formation of casting slag, local temperatures and local heat flux densities of a casting mold wall in a meniscus area of the melt critical for the surface quality of a slab are measured. The working temperature of the casting mold wall in the meniscus area is maintained by adjusting the operating parameters important for the working temperature within a predetermined temperature range (&Dgr;T).

  • Patent number: 6142003
Abstract: A method and apparatus for cooling hot-rolled rolling stock, wherein, for cooling preferably both sides of hot-rolled wide strip, a heat exchange is carried out between the rolling stock and the cooling medium by a pressurized water flow through a sequence of a pressure chamber and a convection chamber, and wherein the rolling stock is cooled by a targeted control of the intensity of the forced convection. The method utilizes a combination of a cooling unit between stands and an additional roll cooling unit in the area of the roll gap at the exit side thereof using a directed pressurized water flow along a circumferential portion of the roll body of each work roll, wherein the cooling unit between stands and the roll cooling unit each operate with contactless sealing means for the surface of the rolling stock and the surface of the roll body.
