  • Patent number: 6297747
Abstract: A tool holder for holding a tool has at least one sensor for measuring an operating parameter of the tool holder or the tool during the operation thereof and generating measured value signals which are fed to a signal processing unit for evaluation. The sensor is a surface acoustic wave sensor operating according to acoustic wave principles and its measured value signals are readable in a contactless manner by means of radio waves. The surface acoustic wave sensor requires no current supply circuit but instead draws transmission energy required for transmission of the measured value signals to the signal processing unit from a high frequency interrogation signal, that is transmitted by radio waves from the signal processing unit and is received by the surface acoustic wave sensor.

  • Patent number: 6087979
Abstract: A signal source produces a frequency-modulated signal. The signal is supplied to a transmit/receive unit and transmitted. A surface-wave element produces a signal delayed by a delay from the frequency-modulated signal. A mixer mixes the delayed signal with the received signal and outputs the mixed signal to an evaluation device. The delay is preferably equal to the propagation time of a signal on the measurement path. The coherence length of the ranging apparatus is thereby substantially improved.

  • Patent number: 6052080
Abstract: For improving the measuring precision, a reference unit (REF) is juxtaposed with a continuous wave radar (DSR). This reference unit (REF) comprises a surface wave element (OFW) for generating a signal delayed relative to the transmission signal. A mixed signal is formed from the delayed signal and the transmission signal with a mixer (MI2), this mixed signal being utilized in combination with the measured signal stemming from the continuous wave radar (DSR) for determining the distance.

  • Patent number: 6020821
Abstract: A method for detecting the position of a switching device and an encapsulated switching installation having at least one switching device. A transmitted signal is emitted into the interior of an encapsulation to make it possible to easily detect the position of a switching device in an encapsulated switching installation. A resultant reflection signal is received and stored. After a repetition of this process, the two received reflection signals are compared with one another. In the event of any discrepancy, a message signal is produced for the new switching state.

  • Patent number: 5784024
Abstract: When measuring speed over ground by means of microwave Doppler radar, signal noise, switching spikes and nearby reflectors reduce the measurement accuracy. In order to avoid these disadvantages, a reference signal which recurs with the period T.sub.0 and a target signal which follows the reference signal after a time interval T.sub.s are emitted via an antenna. That part of the reference signal which has already been received again during transmission of the target signal is subtracted from the target signal which is received later. The difference signal obtained in this way is a measurement signal from which interference spikes, signal noise and nearby reflectors have been largely removed.

  • Patent number: 5761155
Abstract: In a method for determining the position of an object relative to the background with ultrasound, a plurality of ultrasound transducers arranged in a row simultaneously transmit ultrasound in line-shaped fashion in the direction of an object scene and receive both the echo of the signal transmitted by the transducer itself as well as the echoes of the signals generated by the neighboring ultrasound transducers. On the basis of a reference measurement wherein no object is located in the measurement region, the amplitudes and the times of incidence of the echo signals are stored. In the following measurements with an object, the echo amplitudes and the times of incidence of the echo signals are again stored and compared by fuzzy logic to those of the reference measurement. As a result, this supplies the position of the object relative to the background.

  • Patent number: 5587969
Abstract: In a first step, an individual echo is associated with each local maxima in the received ultrasonic signal. Subsequently, characteristic features such as time position, amplitude and form factor of each respective individual echo are detected numerically for the individual echo. In a second step, the mentioned features are subjected to a fuzzy evaluation. The features form the input variables of the evaluation. A multiple echo probability for each individual echo is available as the result. With this awareness, with the aid of the a priori knowledge and with the aid of the awareness of the history, it is possible, for example, to draw conclusions concerning the filling level of the bulk material in containers in which the surface of the bulk material is at times masked for the ultrasonic beam by the stirring apparatus.

  • Patent number: 5436631
Abstract: A system for identifying momentary location and the momentary velocity of, in particular, a rail-bound vehicle, has a transmission/evaluation unit having an antenna for emitting a high-frequency pulse and for receiving a reflected pulse reply signal. Surface wave identification marks having individual coding are arranged at intervals from one another in an area of and along a prescribed travel path of the vehicle. The mutual phase shift of at least two pulse reply signals can be measured as a Doppler shift and the travel velocity can be calculated therefrom via the relative velocity with pulse interrogations of an identification mark following one another at least twice at a predetermined location before/after traversing a specific identification mark. The point in time change in operational sign of the Doppler shift is acquired for this identification mark, and is the point in time of traversal of the location of the specific identification mark.

  • Patent number: 5325703
Abstract: The present invention discloses a method for identifying the concentration of fuels or gases in air, particularly in the intake of motor vehicle motors, with ultrasound measurement, comprising the steps of conducting an air/vapor mixture whose concentration is to be identified through an ultrasound measuring section of known length, directing ultrasound through the mixture in the measuring section, determining the speed of sound through the air/vapor mixture; and identifying the concentration of the mixture on the basis of the speed of sound through the mixture in the measuring section.

  • Patent number: 4949321
Abstract: An ultrasound echo profile sensor for use as a tactile sensor, having an ultrasound measuring head containing a transmitter and a receiver and also having an entrained reference reflector by means of which the current speed of sound of the ambient air can be identified. The respective distance of the tactile sensor from a sensor subject can be correctly measured independently of the variable speed of sound of the ambient air because a reference echo caused by the reference reflector can be discriminated from situation echoes on the basis of its known, proximate position. The reference reflector, whose distance from the ultrasound receiver is constant in the reference case, is arranged such that the distance between the ultrasound receiver and the reference reflector changes in a characteristic way given tactile contact between a sensor head and the sensor subject, particularly a workpiece.

  • Patent number: 4922750
Abstract: A method for measuring high flow rates, particularly for the intake air for motor vehicle drives, includes the steps of modulating an oscillator signal, transmitting the modulated oscillator signal via two paths, with at least one of the paths passing through the flow path to be measured and the interacting with the fluid flow so that the signal in that path is phase-shifted by an amount dependent on the flow rate, separately receiving the signals from the two paths, comparing the received signals by phase discrimination to obtain a signal corresponding to the phase difference in the signals from the two paths, and deriving a signal corresponding to the flow rate from the phase difference. One or both of the signal paths can be an ultrasonic transmisson path. If the phase discrimination takes place in a phase discriminator which has an unstable range of operation, corrective steps can be taken so that the phase discrimination necessary for the method is moved out of the unstable range.

  • Patent number: 4885942
Abstract: An ultrasound of flow rate meter which uses the phase difference method wherein two ultrasound transducers W1 and W2 are mounted offset but aligned with each other in a tube through which the velocity of flow is to be measured wherein both of the ultrasound transducers are excited in a pulse manner by an oscillator OS2 and wherein receiving amplifiers V1 and V2 are, respectively, associated with the ultrasound transducers W1 and W2. Evaluation devices are connected after amplifier V1 and V2 such that the phase relationship of the signals at the outputs of the receiving amplifiers V1 and V2 is determined during the reception of ultrasound signals. The phase relationship between the signals at the ultrasound transducers is also determined during transmission of ultrasound signals and this phase difference is used as a reference during reception of ultrasound signals.
