    Abstract: Technologies for fast low-power startup include a computing device with a processor having a power management integrated circuit. The computing device initializes platform components into a low-power state and determines, in a pre-boot firmware environment, the battery state of the computing device. The computing device determines a minimum-power startup (MPS) configuration that identifies platform components to be energized and determines whether the battery state is sufficient for the MPS configuration. If sufficient, the computing device energizes the platform components of the MPS configuration and boots into an MPS boot mode. In the MPS boot mode, the computing device may execute one or more user-configured application(s). If the battery state is sufficient for normal operation, the computing device may boot into a normal mode. In the normal mode, the user may configure the MPS configuration by selecting features for the future MPS boot mode. Other embodiments are described and claimed.

A logical disk segment is created within the container for each logical disk. When storage capacity is added through the addition of capacity to an existing logical disk, a new logical disk segment is added to the end of the container for the new logical disk segment within the logical disk.     Abstract: A UEFI compliant firmware is disclosed that includes a UEFI legacy boot loader. The UEFI legacy boot loader provides functionality for loading operating systems that are non-UEFI compliant in a performant manner. In particular, the UEFI legacy boot loader provided in one embodiment disclosed herein is configured to utilize UEFI disk services to load an O/S kernel and other O/S components. Once the UEFI legacy boot loader has completed loading the O/S components, the UEFI legacy boot loader enables interrupt handling by the O/S, relocates O/S real mode kernel setup code to a low memory region (below 1 MB), and switches a processor to a real mode of operation. The UEFI legacy boot loader then causes the real mode kernel setup code to be executed on the processor, to thereby complete the loading of the operating system.

A system table may be maintained with entries corresponding to provisions within the available physical capacity of a data storage system. A volume table may be maintained that includes entries corresponding to territories within a logical data storage volume. When a data write operation is requested, a determination may be made as to whether physical space has been allocated for the territory in the volume that is to be written. If physical space has not yet been allocated, the necessary physical space may be allocated for the territory within the logical volume that is to receive the written data and the requested write operation may be performed. Metadata can be written to disk as to simplify recover from system crashes and unclean shutdowns.
