  • Publication number: 20070253952
Abstract: Multifunctional and multivalent angiogenesis inhibitors are made up of fusion proteins comprising a polypeptide which recognizes and blocks a functionally active region of a molecule involved in the angiogenesis process and a polypeptide comprising an oligomerization domain and functionally active, inhibitor or modulator region of the angiogenesis process, separated by a proteinase-sensitive region. These inhibitors are applicable in treating and preventing pathologies occurring with angiogenesis process, for example cancer, rheumatic arthritis or psoriasis.

  • Publication number: 20070084804
Abstract: A process for treating sewage sludge with percent solids less than 20 percent comprises (1) contacting sewage sludge that contains undesirable microorganisms with at least one compound that produces methyl isothiocyanate in water to form a reaction mixture, (2) mixing the reaction mixture, and (3) maintaining the reaction mixture in a closed vessel for at least about two hours. After the reaction mixture is maintained in a closed vessel for the desired time, the closed vessel can be vented to the atmosphere for a time sufficient to dissipate residual methyl isothiocyanate from the reaction mixture.

  • Publication number: 20050030137
Abstract: A magnetically-loaded artificial magnetic conductor surface provides enhanced bandwidth. The structure includes in one embodiment a thumbtack structure with a spacer layer that is loaded with a barium-cobalt hexaferrite based artificial magnetic material. Specifically, the geometry consists of a ground plane covered with thinly sliced ferrite tiles that are metallized and stacked. Each tile has a metal via running through its center that is electrically connected to the plated metallized surfaces. A foam spacer layer resides above the ferrite tiles. Atop the foam spacer layer rests a capacitive surface, which can be realized as a single layer array of metal patches, a multiple layer array of overlapping patches or other planar capacitive geometry.

  • Publication number: 20030018048
Abstract: A biocatalytic process to obtain optically enriched derivatives of trans-4-(4-fluorophenyl)-3-hydroxymethylpiperidines, based on the enzymatic resolution of racemic precursors of formula III (where R3 is preferably phenyl or benzyl) by acylation of the hydroxyl group. Depending on the enzyme and the reaction conditions, either of the two enantiomers may be obtained with high enantiomeric purity. These compounds are important intermediates in the synthesis of the paroxetine anti-depressive agent.

  • Patent number: 4976865
Abstract: A method for allowing biological macromolecules contained in a solution to be separated by selective absorption comprising supplying with a solution each stage (3, 4) of a column containing a selective chromatographic resin specific to the macromolecules to be separated, so as to fluidize the beds of resin at each stage, each stage being provided at its base with a perforated distribution system (5) characterized by a percentage of open sections between 0.2% and 10%, a mean diameter of the said open sections greater than approximately 300 microns and between 2G.sub.m and 20G.sub.m, where G.sub.m is the mean granulometry of the resin.

  • Patent number: 4758320
Abstract: The invention relates to a process for separating electrically charged solid particles or macromolecules contained in a solution by using a semi-permeable membrane which is specific for the separation to be carried out and by applying an electric field to reduce the concentration gradient in the immediate vicinity of the membrane. In the present invention, a plurality of semi-permeable membranes (2, 3) are arranged directly oppositely each other so as to define an alternation of low and high pressure compartments (4, 5), and periodically the direction of the electric field is reversed. The process of the invention allows increasing the exchange area while benefiting of permanently increased efficiency from the applied electric field.

  • Patent number: 4437967
Abstract: The fractionating apparatus of the invention for the separation of at least two dissolved groups of substances in a solution is of the type wherein an electric field is applied in fractionating chambers separated by semi-permeable membranes so as to generate different migrations by various groups of substances; each fractionating chamber is bounded by a peripheral frame 3 provided with a plurality of strips 23; the two semi-permeable membranes 1 and 2 of the chamber are applied on either side against the faces of said frame and against the faces of said strips; spacer compartments are advantageously provided on either side of the fractionating chambers, said spacer compartments containing an auxiliary solution capable of enhancing by high rate ion exchanges the differences in migrations of the substances to be separated.
