    Abstract: The problem of battery failure due to failure of one cell in a rechargeable battery, and the related problem of inefficient use of a battery over its dynamic range due to differences between the performance of cells in a battery, are addresses by providing one or more capacitors selectively coupled to the various cells of the battery. The selective and repetitive coupling of capacitors to the cells permits balancing of charge among the cells. This minimizes the risk that any one cell would suffer catastrophic failure due to being fully charged or discharged prior to the other cells in the battery. This also permits making use of the battery over nearly all of its dynamic range. In this way, battery life is maximized.

    Abstract: A voltaic pile has first and second terminals by which it is charged and discharged. The pile comprises a plurality of modules (3), each having respective third and fourth terminals with a plurality of voltaic cells connected in series therebetween. The modules are connected series-wise or in series-parallel configuration by the respective third and fourth terminals, with the end terminals of the series of modules defining the previously mentioned first and second terminals. A power supply Load (1) is provided with DC input terminals and AC output terminals, the DC input terminals connected via lines (2) with the first and second terminals. Thus, even in the absence of Power charging current or drain current, the power supply is able to draw upon the output of the pile to supply power back to individual modules that may require charging, to maintain balance among the modules.

    Abstract: The problem of undesired power consumption in an oscillator during “stop” periods of a device is addressed by providing the oscillator in apparatus external to the device, the apparatus including a current sensor sensing current in a line between the apparatus and the device, the line communicating an oscillator “clock” signal. If the device enters a “stop” state the current flow during certain half-cycles of the oscillation is relatively low compared to the current flow in the “no-stop” state. In response to the relatively low current, the apparatus halts oscillation. Later, when the device exits the “stop” state, current flow increases in the line, and the apparatus resumes oscillation, thereby resuming the communication of the clock signal to the device.

Three dimensions of input are received from a resistor bridge by means of four contact points to the strain gauge. A sequence of excitation signals is applied to the bridge and a multiplexer is employed to permit a signal processor to sample sensor outputs. The apparatus processes the sampled outputs and determines the user inputs such as X and Y and Z values of the pointing device.

    Abstract: A clock stretching circuit (110) mites between a synchronous bus (112) and a microcontroller (124) which is asleep most of the time to save electrical power. The bus is of a type in which a slow bus device can cause the sender of data to “hold” the data until the slow device is up to speed. The stretching circuit (110) is of small component count and low power consumption, and there is no requirement for a continuous clock. In one embodiment is comprised of a triple analog switch (120, 121, 122) and a very small number of additional components. In another embodiment a dual four-position multiplexer (162, 163) is employed. In still another embodiment, four transistors (210, 212, 213, 215) are used with handful of additional components. A level shifter (220, 221, 222, 223) including an MOSFET and a large-value resistor help to minimize power drain within the bus device.

    Abstract: A heart fitness evaluation system is set up in booth form in which a participating person may have the fitness condition of his heart evaluated based on a step test protocol. Personalized data is transmitted to the system in the form of selected answers to questions proposed, and the person is classified according to such data provided for the purposes of data comparison. The person engages in supervised exercise over a timed period to accelerate heart functions. After the activity, the person's heart is monitored to determine the recovery rate of the heart over real time. Comparison of the recovery rate is made against stored physiological data relating to heart rate recovery of classified persons, which is translated in to the fitness level of the person's heart and displaying such results.

In variation by small variation of a variable which is substantially independent from active parameters of the transistors results in a gain variation which is independent of the cable length in the lower frequency region and utilizes no coils.
