Abstract: Various embodiments are generally directed to network slice selector (NSS). In one embodiment, for example, an evolved node B (eNB) may include a processor circuit, and an NSS for execution by the processor circuit to allocate a network slice (NS) to a user equipment (UE). The NS may comprise one or more virtual network function(s) (VNF). In one implementation, a VNF takes on the responsibility of handing specific network functions run on one or more virtual machines (VM) associated with hardware networking infrastructures, such as routers, switches, etc. Individual VNFs may be combined or connected together to provide a complete networking communication service for UEs. • Patent number: 10149299
Abstract: Collecting state information about the resources of radio access networks (RANs) and the Access Point Names (APNs) enables this information to be provided to mobile stations which employ this information to determine which radio access technology (RAT) to employ for connecting to the wireless access network, and to determine which APN to use. This decision is made relative to each application that the mobile station is executing, and these decisions are, optionally, revisited periodically, or as significant changes in the state information are recognized.

  • Patent number: 10129925
Abstract: Technology that allows PDN connections for a UE to be resumed efficiently after WLAN connectivity is lost and then regained are disclosed. A UE can have a multi-legged or multi-access packet-data-network (PDN) connection that is used to communicate with a WLAN and with an eNB. When WLAN connectivity is lost, the UE can send a WLAN-connectivity-loss communication to a PDN-GW via the eNB. A TWAG can also detect that the UE's WLAN connectivity has been lost and can send a suspension communication to the PDN-GW. The TWAG can also store PDN context information for the UE for a predefined period of time. When the UE regains WLAN connectivity, the UE can send a WLAN-link-control-protocol (WLCP) communication to the TWAG indicating that the UE wishes to resume one or more PDN connections that were previously suspended.

  • Patent number: 10117167
Abstract: Embodiments describe methods, apparatuses and logic for a user equipment (UE) to connect to an access point (AP) in a wireless local area network (WLAN) based on credentials from a UE's home third generation partnership project (3GPP) network. In some embodiments, the UE may receive selection policy parameters from the WLAN including a network access identifier (NAI) realm. The UE may also receive selection policy parameters from the 3GPP network. The UE may compare the selection policy parameters of the WLAN with the selection policy parameters of the 3GPP network and discover roaming relationships between service providers and the relative priorities of different networks, and create a network list based on the comparison. The UE may then associate with an AP of the WLAN based on the prioritized network list.

  • Publication number: 20180242137
Abstract: Embodiments of a mobile device and methods automatically connecting to a Wi-Fi Hotspot 2.0 are generally described herein. In some embodiments, subscription information for one or more service providers (SP) that operate Wi-Fi networks is stored in a subscription data object of the mobile device. The subscription information includes home service provider information, policy information and pre-provisioned credentials. The mobile device may be configured to determine, without user interaction, if the subscription information is applicable to an available Wi-Fi network and perform without user interaction, an extensible authentication protocol (EAP) based authentication using the pre-provisioned credentials with the available Wi-Fi network to establish a Wi-Fi connection with the available Wi-Fi network. This automatic connectivity may allow a mobile device to roam across Wi-Fi hotspots of Wi-Fi networks and offload traffic to Wi-Fi networks.

  • Publication number: 20180160461
Abstract: Described herein are systems, apparatuses, and processes for obtaining data for a specific PDN connection of a cellular network. A UE executes one or more applications utilizing one or more PDN connections of a cellular network. A TE generates an AT command for an MT, the AT command comprising a request for data for a specific PDN connection that can be offloaded from the cellular network to a non-cellular network, assistance data for determining offloading of traffic, and cellular signal measurements. The TE receives an AT command response, corresponding to the AT command, comprising data of whether the specific PDN connection can be offloaded, offload assistance data, and/or cellular network measurement data. The TE may receive unsolicited result codes when offloadablity of a PDN connection changes, offload assistance data changes, or when cellular signal measurements meet offload assistance criteria.

  • Publication number: 20180152980
Abstract: Technology for using an open mobile alliance (OMA) management object (MO) for congestion control in mobile networks is described. A novel type of OMA MO for application specific access control (ASAC) can include internet protocol (IP) flow descriptions that can be used to characterize applications with fine granularity. Priorities can be assigned to IP flows based on the IP flow descriptions. A user equipment (UE) can receive such an OMA MO and also receive application-barring information regarding a congestion level in a mobile network with which an application at the UE wishes to connect. The UE can have a connectivity manager (CM) that determines whether to allow the application to establish a connection with the mobile network based on the priority level of the application's associated IP flow and the application-barring information.
