  • Patent number: 7885025
Abstract: A data storage system includes a storage medium having a plurality of data sectors and a head that communicates with the data storage medium. The head produces a readback signal when reading information from the data storage medium. A computation unit extracts a distortion component of the readback signal and generates a position error signal from the distortion component.

  • Patent number: 7614526
Abstract: A holder for an aerosol can is provided in which a pivotable trigger mechanism can actuate the aerosol can by inducing a compressive force on the lower end of the can. When inducing this compressive force, the pivotable trigger mechanism is at an angle with the holder wall. After dispersing the contents of the aerosol can, the pivotable trigger mechanism can then be rotated such that the trigger mechanism substantially covers an opening in the holder body.

  • Patent number: 7440384
Abstract: A magnetic recording device is provided according to the present invention for magnetic recording on a recording medium. The magnetic recording device includes a planar waveguide having a propagation axis. The planar waveguide allows light received thereby to propagate along the propagation axis. The magnetic recording device further includes a magnetic pole having a yoke disposed adjacent the planar waveguide and a pole tip extending into the planar waveguide along the propagation axis. By extending the pole tip into, and incorporating it with, the planar waveguide, the light propagating through the planar waveguide and a magnetic flux flowing through the magnetic pole are co-locatable on a recording medium disposed adjacent the magnetic recording device.

  • Patent number: 6128930
Abstract: A patterned pile fabric with uncut and severed pile loops is manufactured on a circular knitting machine in which pile elements (1) are arranged in a cylinder (C) provided with an upper and a lower pile forming ledge divided by a holding hook. For the knitting and pile forming action the pile elements (1) are individually selected and actuated at least to two different positions in which one of the alternative pile forming ledges is arranged between the needles (N). Pile loops drawn out over the upper pile forming ledges are cleared from the pile elements in the subsequent feeder by an additional clearing movement while pile loops formed over the lower pile ledge will remain on the pile elements. Those pile loops will slide downwardly along the stems of the pile elements by the subsequent knitting.

  • Patent number: 5957342
Abstract: A valve assembly and mounting cup combination which comprises a mounting cup having an exterior, outwardly facing surface and an interior, inwardly facing surface, and a perimeter curl for attaching the mounting cup to a desired rim of a container. The mounting cup includes a pedestal portion with a conically-shaped top surface having a centrally located aperture formed therein and a gasket is disposed within the pedestal portion between an undersurface of the pedestal portion and a valve assembly. The valve assembly comprises a valve body, a valve stem with a base, and a spring. The assembly is disposed in and retained by the pedestal portion, via a conventional crimping process, with a product outlet carried by the valve stem and protruding through the aperture in the gasket and the central aperture. The spring biases the valve base against the gasket to form a seal therebetween.

  • Patent number: 5803319
Abstract: A valve having a valve body, defining a longitudinal axis, with a circular side wall extending down beyond a floor of the body to define a socket. Into this socket is frictionally engaged an appendage having a circular upper end and a nipple at its lower end. The appendage is partitioned into a primary product passage, communicating with a product outlet extending through the floor of the valve body, and a ball chamber, the lower of which is provided with a valve seat with a bypass opening communicating with the primary product passage. A ball chamber passage is formed in the ball chamber above the valve seat and a ball is normally seated, via gravity, on the valve seat when the container is in a normal upright position. When the container is inverted, the ball drops away from the seat and permits passage of product through the ball chamber passage, through the bypass opening into the primary product passage and up into the valve body for discharge.

  • Patent number: 5746395
Abstract: A helicopter safety system provides an increased likelihood of survivability without injury during "survivable" helicopter crashes. The system provides spinal compression for precompressing an operator's spine in response to a crash signal from a crash sensor. Also included is a strap tensioning device which tensions an inertia reel strap and thus restraining the operator's upper body more effectively in the helicopter seat. Preferably, the strap tensioning device is initiated simultaneously with the spinal compression. Also included are energy absorbers connected to the seat pan, for example, between the seat pan and the seat frame, and airbags connected to the harness. The harness also includes a cross coupling element to provide for a lateral support configuration.

  • Patent number: 5746704
Abstract: An apparatus are provided for flexing a body member to rehabilitate the same. For early motion of flexure tendons or the like, very small ranges, for example, 2.degree. to 5.degree. of tension and flexion may be set at opposite ends of a full range of motion for the joint. The drive motor is preferably a stepper motor or the like that is controlled by a microprocessor-based controller to travel through small, variable, early motion ranges for tension and flexion of variable distances and for a variable number of cycles. The illustrated apparatus for pulling a carriage for travel in a forward or reverse direction compresses a slide guide for guiding the carriage for sliding travel thereon about a predetermined path having a curved portion about which the carriage slides when being pulled in a forward direction and in a reverse direction.
