  • Patent number: 10320303
Abstract: A system and a method offset the effect of a reduced load current on a power factor controller connected to a DC-to-DC converter having a switching DC-to-AC inverter driving an output rectifier that produces the load current. A frequency-dependent load impedance is coupled to the output of the inverter. The frequency-dependent load impedance is configured to have a first impedance when the inverter is operating at the minimum operating frequency. The frequency-dependent load impedance has a second impedance when the inverter is operating at the maximum operating frequency. The second impedance is lower than the first impedance and produces a dummy load current that is added to the actual load current to provide a sufficient total load current to cause the power factor controller to operate in a continuous mode even when the actual load current is insufficient to cause the power factor controller to operate in a continuous mode.

  • Patent number: 10178720
Abstract: An LED driver is configured to minimize power consumption during standby operating modes. The LED driver includes power factor correction (PFC) and isolated DC-DC conversion stages, driven by respective first and second regulators. An auxiliary sensor detects environmental conditions for a controller which generates standby or normal operating mode signals based thereon. A low standby isolated power supply circuit receives operating mode signals and is configured: responsive to normal operating mode signals to enable the voltage regulators; responsive to standby mode signals to disable the voltage regulators, and in both modes to supply power to the controller and auxiliary sensor. Accordingly, the controller and auxiliary sensor are continuously enabled whereas the PFC and DC-DC stages of the LED driver are disabled during standby modes. Additional circuitry may selectively disconnect voltage sensing resistance networks from the LED driver for further reductions in power consumption during standby mode.

  • Patent number: 10103538
Abstract: A driver circuit provides power from a power source to a load. The driver circuit includes a surge protector, an input stage (e.g., full wave rectifier), a controller, an overvoltage protection circuit, and an output stage (e.g., a half bridge inverter). The input stage receives power from the power source and provides a direct current (DC) power rail. The controller operates the output stage to provide power from the DC power rail to the load. The overvoltage protection circuit shuts down the controller when the DC power rail exceeds a predetermined voltage. This ceases operation of the output stage, protecting the output stage from damage while the DC power rail is above the predetermined voltage.
