  • Publication number: 20070104215
Abstract: A wireless communication system is provided that has at least three nodes arranged in a multi-hop ultra wide band (UWB) communication network such that communications from a first node destined for a third node pass through a second node. Each of the devices in the system includes a radio and a media access control (“MAC”) module that is configured to establish multi-hop UWB wireless communications between the three or more wireless communication devices that enables high bandwidth applications such as Voice Over Internet Protocol (“VoIP”); multiplayer gaming; Wireless High Definition Television; and Internet Protocol Television (“IPTV”) among others. The MAC module is configured to avoid bandwidth reservation conflicts so that network performance does not degrade as the number of hops or the number of nodes in the wireless communication system increases.

  • Publication number: 20060274745
Abstract: Systems and methods for transparent wireless bridging of communication channels are provided. A plurality of wireless bridge devices are each deployed on a wired communication channel segment and listen for traffic to build a table of MAC addresses for the network devices on each respective segment. The bridges also collectively form a wireless mesh network and publish the MAC addresses on the wireless mesh network so each bridge receives MAC address information for every segment. Accordingly, a sending device on a first segment sends a communication to a target device on a second segment. The respective first bridge passes the communication along through the wireless mesh network to the respective second bridge and the first bridge also sends an acknowledgement to the sending device on behalf of the target device.

  • Publication number: 20060268908
Abstract: A scalable medium access control (“MAC”) module is provided that avoids conflict resource reservation so that network performance does not degrade as the number of hops or nodes in a wireless network increases. The MAC also provides different access schemes for traffic with different quality of service (“QoS”) requirements such that QoS is guaranteed and network resources are efficiently utilized. Furthermore, the resource allocation scheme determines the routing path as resources is allocated for data traffice, thereby achieving more robust layer-2 routing at the MAC layer. Finally, the scalable MAC is compliant with both WiMedia MAC and IEEE 802.15.3 MAC.

  • Publication number: 20060253747
Abstract: Systems and methods for providing a boundary scan test of a wired or wireless network having a plurality of network nodes are presented. The system includes a test station communicatively coupled with the network. The test station creates a MAC layer scan test route sequence that includes each link in the network and is independent of the routing mechanism and protocol used for the network. The test station also creates a test agent that is configured to traverse each link in the scan test route sequence. The test agent is then deployed on the network and information about a link is reported back to the test station after the test agent examines the link. The scan test route sequence can be created by sending out a series of broadcast messages from one or more nodes in the network, sequentially applying a network tour to cover the entire network, or performing a depth first search on the entire network.

  • Publication number: 20060215593
Abstract: Systems and methods are provided that facilitate distributed multichannel wireless communication and provide the highest level quality of service (“QoS”) guarantee and support extremely high bandwidth applications such as voice over internet protocol (“VOIP”) streaming audio and video content (including high definition), and multicast applications and also supports convergent networks, ad hoc networks, and the like. A modular MAC architecture provides a group of nodes with the ability to simultaneously communicate with each other using multiple separate communication channels during the same timeslots. The additional throughput gained by employing multiple communication channels is amplified by dynamically mapping the communication channels and timeslots in a network so that multiple channels can be reused simultaneously throughout the network during the same timeslot in a fashion that does not create collisions.

  • Publication number: 20050201346
Abstract: Systems and methods for reducing congestion in a wireless communication network are provided. In one aspect, an improved MAC layer protocol is provided that allows channel switching for data communications over a wireless network on a frame by frame basis allowing increased use of spectrum and significantly reducing congestion. Additionally, throughput is increased and battery life is conserved by reducing the power level for an RTS message to the minimum power needed to reach the recipient node. The corresponding CTS message is then sent by the recipient node and the range of the CTS message is sufficient to inform other nodes in the network that the recipient is not available for communication. This method allows other nodes in the network to remain free to communicate with each other. Moreover, the minimum power level needed to send an RTS message to each node may be maintained in a local routing table or other data storage area on the wireless communication device.

  • Publication number: 20050201340
Abstract: Systems and methods are provided that facilitate distributed TDMA communication amongst nodes in an ad hoc wireless network without the need for centralized management and control. A wireless communication device includes a MAC layer that is configured to synchronize its local clock from a beacon frame that is sent by another node in the ad hoc network. After synchronizing its clock to the ad hoc network, the device identifies a timeslot for transmission. When the timeslot arrives, the device senses the channel to determine if there is traffic and if there is no traffic, the device reserves the timeslot by transmitting. In this fashion, a plurality of timeslots can be divided amongst the devices in the ad hoc wireless network for optimized collision free communication using distributed TDMA. This distributed TDMA communication can also be applied across multiple channels in a wireless network to significantly increase bandwidth and quality-of-service.

  • Publication number: 20050180356
Abstract: The disclosed embodiments of a media access control (MAC) scheme are devised to solve the hidden node problem for channel-hopping broadcast operations in wireless communication networks. The multi-channel broadcast MAC may be adapted to sense and hop around channel interference, and to perform concurrent sensing and load balancing across a set of channels. A multi-hop routing engine using this packet broadcast operator may allow a plurality of network nodes to organize themselves reliably into a communications network. By routing packets around the troubled areas, the routing engine may heal nodal and link failures. When a node changes location, the routing engine may reorganize the network topology automatically and restore the connectivity between communicating peers.

  • Publication number: 20030212821
Abstract: A system and method for routing packets over wireless and wired networks is presented. The system employs an attribute routing scheme that routes communication packets that include objects containing network optimization parameters that are used to control the physical links in the network. The routing transport protocol is logically separated from the objects that are routed, which allows objects having new optimization parameters beyond the conventional network topology parameters or network link parameters to be defined and propagated throughout the network. Additionally, new dynamic routing objects of arbitrary size can be defined that have a customizable update period. These dynamic routing objects are propagated through the network based on their respective custom update periods. The system also includes a feature that enables exponential backoff in the custom update periods.

  • Patent number: 6359979
Abstract: A telephone network includes an Enhanced Call Routing (ECR) function that reroutes calls when the high usage route and fixed tandem routes are overloaded or otherwise unavailable. The ECR function tracks the operation of the telephone network on the basis of origination switches and destination switches and provides temporary network rerouting during outages and unusual loading situations. Further, the ECR function supports Local Number Portability (LNP) so that it may operate in those telephone networks that are designed and/or modified to support LNP. The ECR function resides on a signaling network element such as a Service Switching Point (SSP) and/or a Service Control Point (SCP). A call setup request is received by a Service Switching Point (SSP), an origination switch in the traffic network, and intended for a destination switch. Initial routing via a high usage route and fixed tandem route(s) are unsuccessful. The SSP sends a Network_Busy message to the STP/SCP supporting the ECR function.

  • Patent number: 6111852
Abstract: A method of accomplishing switchover from an inservice local to a remote NP (Network Processor) is described. The remote NP is periodically updated with configuration data obtained from the inservice local NP. Switchover from the local inservice NP to the remote NP is initiated. Communications between the remote NP and a plurality of NEs (Network Elements) is established nonsynchronously. The local NP is notified that the remote NP is established as an inservice NP.
