  • Patent number: 7380535
Abstract: A method and a device for operating an internal combustion engine having multiple cylinders allows for an operating state of the internal combustion engine to be switched over as quickly as possible following the receipt of a switchover request. For this purpose, at least one intake or exhaust valve of a cylinder is switched off or at least one switched-off intake or exhaust valve of the cylinder is switched on again in at least one operating state of the internal combustion engine in response to the switchover request.

  • Publication number: 20080120012
Abstract: A method and a device for operating an internal combustion engine having a plurality of cylinder banks which allow a simple diagnosis of a faulty deactivation of the gas exchange of at least one cylinder bank, or a simple determination of the ambient pressure. In the process, in addition to at least one first cylinder bank having activated gas exchange of at least one cylinder, a deactivation of the gas exchange of all cylinders of at least one second cylinder bank is initiated in at least one operating state of the internal combustion engine. The at least one second cylinder bank is assigned a separate intake tract. In the at least one operating state, a variable that is characteristic for the pressure in the intake tract of the at least one second cylinder bank is measured and evaluated for the presence of undesired pressure pulsations.

  • Publication number: 20080027623
Abstract: In order to achieve at least a short-term reduction of the torque of an internal combustion engine (2), which comprises a range as widely adjustable as possible, causes a slight as possible thermal stress on the components of the attached exhaust gas system (5) and allows for a reduction of the fuel consumption, it is proposed that in addition to the cut off of the fuel-delivery control phase of a cylinder (4), an intake valve (17) associated with the cylinder is cut off.

  • Patent number: 7231895
Abstract: In a method for operating a camshaft adjusting device, using an actuating drive, the actual setting of a camshaft with respect to the rotation of the crankshaft is followed corresponding to a setpoint setting ascertained in a control unit. In response to the occurrence of a lasting system deviation between the actual setting and the setpoint setting, an error signal is generated. The error signal is designed in multiple stages as a function of the system deviation, different weightings being imputed to the individual stages of the fault indication. By this measure, the fault indications of different weightings may be processed. Faults that are not serious, but nevertheless require attention, may be treated separately from serious faults.

  • Patent number: 7225772
Abstract: To operate a steplessly adjustable camshaft control device, particularly reliably and safely, an adaptation of the camshaft and the crankshaft is performed so that a phase angle (actual value) of the camshaft to the crankshaft is determined, the phase angle is monitored while operating the internal combustion engine and the camshaft control device is controlled as a function of a variable setpoint value so that the phase angle is equivalent to the setpoint value.

  • Publication number: 20070089709
Abstract: A method and a device for operating an internal combustion engine, which make possible a defined and reliable cutting in or cutting off a gas-exchange valve of a cylinder. In at least one operating state, at least one intake valve or exhaust valve of a cylinder is cut off or at least one cut-off intake valve or exhaust valve of the cylinder is cut in again, the at least one intake valve or exhaust valve being opened and/or closed using an operating element; and the operating element being switched off or switched on again using a coupling element. A response delay time is ascertained which is required for the operation of the coupling element for the switching off or switching on again the operating element. Furthermore, a switching time window is ascertained within which the operation of the coupling element is desired. Moreover, it is checked whether the switching time window is greater than the response delay time.

  • Publication number: 20070028599
Abstract: A method and a device for operating an internal combustion engine (1) having an exhaust gas treatment system (45), in particular in a non-firing operation of the internal combustion engine (1) are described, which make it possible to implement a different request for change in the temperature gradient of the exhaust gas treatment system (45), in particular via switchover from half-engine operation to full-engine operation. In the event of a request for a change in the temperature gradient of the exhaust gas treatment system (45), a charge cycle state of at least one cylinder (11, 12, . . . 18) of the internal combustion engine (1) is modified.

  • Publication number: 20070015629
Abstract: A method and a device for operating a drive unit provide a switch between half-engine operation and full-engine operation. A switch takes place between two operating states of a first component of the drive unit as a function of a first performance quantity of the drive unit. A switch takes place between two operating states of a second component of the drive unit as a function of a second performance quantity of the drive unit. A check is performed whether switching between two operating states of the second component results in a shift of the first performance quantity over a switching threshold for switching between two operating states of the first component, and if so, the switch between the two operating states of second component is delayed until a switch between the two operating states of first component has occurred.

  • Patent number: 6912997
Abstract: The invention is directed to a method and an arrangement for determining a fuel wall film mass in an internal combustion engine (1) having intake manifold injection. The method and arrangement provide a precise as possible transition compensation also for the case wherein the fuel injection into the open inlet valve (5) of a cylinder (20) takes place. The fuel wall film mass is determined starting from a fuel injection which takes place completely in advance of opening of the inlet valve (5) of the cylinder (20) of the internal combustion engine (1) into the intake manifold (10). The value so determined for the fuel wall film mass is corrected in dependence upon the ratio between the fuel mass, which is injected via the open inlet valve (5) into the combustion chamber (15) of the cylinder (20), and the total injected fuel mass.

  • Publication number: 20050061272
Abstract: In a method for monitoring a camshaft adjustment of an internal combustion engine in which a setpoint value of an angular position is compared with an actual value of the angular position, a more differentiated fault diagnosis is achieved in that at least two fault types are able to be detected on the basis of the profile of the actual value over time.

  • Publication number: 20050038593
Abstract: A precontrol is carried out for the control of the position of the camshaft via a camshaft actuator especially in internal combustion engines and preferably in such engines of motor vehicles. For this purpose, a control for the position of a camshaft is carried out by a camshaft actuator with reference to a reference position in dependence upon the actual position of the camshaft and in dependence upon a determined desired position for the camshaft. An actuating signal for driving the actuator for the camshaft is determined from the desired position and the actual position of the camshaft actuator. In the determination of the actuating signal, a precontrol component is considered which is determined based on state quantities characterizing the operation of the camshaft actuator.

  • Publication number: 20030028335
Abstract: A method and a device are proposed for diagnosing flow resistance in the intake tract of internal combustion engines, which permit ascertaining the flow resistance in the intake tract with sufficient accuracy, using only one pressure sensor, in order, for example, to be able to diagnose a fouled air filter. This is done by measuring the suction pipe pressure in unthrottled operation at low and at higher air mass flow, and the flow resistance in the intake tract is inferred from the pressure difference.

  • Patent number: 6505602
Abstract: An internal combustion engine (1), especially for a motor vehicle, is described, which has a combustion chamber (4) into which fuel can be injected in at least two operating modes. Each of the injections has an injection start angle and an injection duration. Furthermore, a control apparatus 18 is provided for control (open loop and/or closed loop). An injection end angle can be determined by the control apparatus (18) from the injection start angle and the injection duration. Likewise, a check can be made by the control apparatus (18) as to whether an injection interrupt angle is exceeded by the injection end angle.
