  • Publication number: 20070003792
Abstract: A magnetic recording system is disclosed in which the magnetization dynamics of the write head and recording medium are highly damped. The system may comprise a perpendicular recording head having a write pole, and a recording medium including a hard magnetic recording layer and a soft magnetic underlayer (SUL). The increased magnetic damping in the write pole and SUL suppresses precessional motion of the respective magnetizations, leading to a reduction in transition jitter caused by spurious head field fluctuations. The damping may be increased by providing films or multilayer structures that are doped with rare earth or transition metal elements. Exchange coupled laminates of doped and undoped layers may optimize both the effective damping and write field in the recording system.

  • Patent number: 6580052
Abstract: Mounting method for a miser laser having a miser crystal on the base surface of a housing, which has a side wall with a housing window for the miser exit beam, is provided. A reference beam is directed through the housing window on to the crystal end face of the miser crystal with an inverted light beam direction which the miser beam to be generated is later to have. An adjusting device which permits mutually independent movements, on the one hand in a direction parallel to the reference beam, and on the other hand perpendicular thereto and parallel to the housing base, and also permits rotations about an axis of rotation perpendicular to the housing base, is used to preadjust the premounted miser stack such that the angle between the surface normal of the crystal end face and the reference beam is approximately 45°, and the reference beam strikes the crystal end face approximately at its center.

  • Patent number: 6136036
Abstract: The present invention concerns an endoprosthesis for an artificial hip-joint, the endoprosthesis including a shank (1) having an adapter (2) at one of its ends. A ballhead (4) is fitted with a recess (6) detachably engaged by the adapter (2) while retaining the ballhead. The adapter (2) and the recess (6) are cylindrical, whereby the ballhead (4) is axially adjustable. A device is provided for retaining the ballhead (4) in various axial positions relative to the adapter (2). Accordingly, the ballhead (4) is adjustable with respect to its axial position and thereby its distance from the adapter (2) or the shank (1) is likewise adjustable. This feature eliminates the need to stock different ballheads matching different anatomic particulars.

  • Patent number: 6125043
Abstract: The circuit board (1) has a component (101) mounted on it by means of a soldering process which causes an automatic, passive alignment of the component (101) due to the surface tension in a melted piece of solder which electrically connects two pads (2, 102), one (102) of which is on the component and the other (2) of which is on the circuit board. Stand-offs (20) are used to provide a suitable spacing or distance between the component (101) and the circuit board (1). The other pad (2) has a surface that is divided into a central part (3) and an edge part (4), both wettable by the solder. The second or edge part (4) is shaped like a ring and surrounds the central part and is composed so that it is more slowly wettable by the solder than the central part. The spacing established by the stand-offs is dimensioned so that a melted piece of the solder between the pads produces a force drawing the component (101) toward the circuit board (1) because of surface tension in the melted solder.

  • Patent number: 5917671
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for recording longitudinal track bundles on an information medium. The method involves recording tracking information in special tracks in said track bundles. The special tracks are contiguous between each other. When recording a new track bundle a recording and/or reading head may be positioned using tracking information contained in special tracks of a previously recorded track bundle. Several examples of patterns used for coding tracking information in the special tracks we described.

  • Patent number: 5799524
Abstract: A shaped and pierced hollow workpiece is made by first confining a hollow metal blank in a cavity of a die which has an inner surface and is formed with a lateral compartment. The blank is internally pressurized to press it outward against the inner surface of the cavity while forming at the compartment an outwardly projecting bulge. A tool is pressed against an outer surface of the bulge and the bulge is pressed inward so as to at least partially to invert it and press a central portion of the bulge against an opposite inside wall of the blank. A hole is then machined through the blank where the central portion of the bulge engages the opposite inside wall.

  • Patent number: 5760717
Abstract: Low-redundancy codes are increasingly being striven for, such codes thus inevitably requiring comparatively long code words. However, since the memory requirement for coding tables increases considerably with the length of the code words, the use of code tables is then no longer expedient. Instead, coding is then effected by selecting the optimum code word in each case from a plurality of different code words taking account of coding; prescriptions and spectral decisions. For this purpose, the maximum run length for each code word is also determined, inter alia, but the spectral decisions are decisive as long as the maximum run length does not exceed a predetermined maximum value. Provided that the end of one code word and the beginning of a succeeding code word have the same binary value, incorrect decisions in the selection of the optimum code word may arise in the region where the synchronizing pattern is keyed in.

  • Patent number: 5410557
Abstract: An apparatus for distinguishing a wanted signal in a binary signal sequence having both wanted signals and interference signals includes the step of generating a correction value which has a first value to indicate a wanted binary signal and a second value to indicate a binary interference signal. The wanted signal has a preselected maximum number of bits. A first counter counts the bits of the binary signal sequence and changes the correction value from the first value to the second value when the preselected maximum is exceeded. The correction value is reset to the first value when the temporal spacing between two occurrences of excesses of the preselected maximum number exceeds a predetermined spacing.

  • Patent number: 5367535
Abstract: A circuit for developing a binary bitstream signal from a ternary analog signal having positive and negative amplitude peaks includes an analog-to-digital converter for receiving the analog signal and providing digital samples in accordance with the amplitude and polarity of the analog signal. The most significant bit of digital sample indicates the polarity of an analog signal sample. A threshold value is compared to a current amplitude sample to indicate a level change in the analog signal when the sample value exceeds the threshold value and the polarity differs from that of the preceding sample which exceeded the threshold value. The current sample value which exceeds the threshold value is compared with preceding sample values which exceeded the threshold value, and a level change is indicated by the sample value which most exceeds the threshold value. Incorrect sample values are inverted in a correction circuit.
