  • Publication number: 20060242161
Abstract: A system 100 includes a rendering apparatus 120, a server 110 and a network 130. Content items on the server are identified by respective server content locators, such as a URL. The rendering apparatus also has access to local content. Titles of the local content are associated with respective local content identifiers, such as title IDs. The system can generate and store a plurality of bookmarks, that each include a server content locator and a local content identifier. The rendering apparatus can render items of the local content and server content items that relate to the local content items. The rendering apparatus renders a server content item indicated by the server content locator of a bookmark conditional on having access to a local content title associated with the local content identifier of the bookmark.

  • Publication number: 20060056810
Abstract: The invention relates to an apparatus for receiving a first and second video signal. The first video signal represents a sequence of images having a first size, and the second video signal representing a sequence of images having a second size, the second size being smaller then the first size of the images. The apparatus combines said first and second video signal so as to obtain a composite video signal suitable for displaying on a display unit. The signal combination means being adapted to combine the first and second video signal while the size of the images corresponding to the second video signal remains unchanged.

  • Publication number: 20050141863
Abstract: A device for rendering real time information arranged in cells constituted by units encoded at a variable bit rate, e.g. video on a DVD, is described. The device has various trick play modes for rendering the information at a different speeds based on speed pointers. A limited amount of speed pointers is included in the information stream. The device has a calculation unit 32 for calculating further speed pointers based on estimating the playback time of the units by retrieving cell playback information (C-PBIT) that includes the addresses of the first unit and the last unit within the cell and a cell playback time, retrieving a unit address map (VTS-VOBU-ADMAP) that includes the addresses of the units, determining a number of units within the cell by determining a position of said first and last unit in the unit address map, and dividing the cell playback time by the number of units.

  • Publication number: 20050053363
Abstract: The application relates to a method of and devices for encoding an information stream (20) into a variable bit rate (VBR) encoded information stream (24). The application discloses a method of estimating the relation between the variable bit rate, the recording time and the storage capacity of a record carrier. The deviation of the estimated recording time from the true recording time is kept within predefined limits and it is prevented that deviations from several successive recordings accumulate.

  • Publication number: 20040240860
Abstract: An apparatus for reproducing video data signals has been proposed. It comprises input means for receiving encoded video data signals and processing means for decoding the encoded video data signals into the video data signals. The encoded video data signals comprise a base stream of signals representing a standard resolution portion of the video data signals and at least one enhancement stream of signals representing a high-resolution portion of the video data signals. The apparatus is capable of reproducing high-resolution video data by decoding and combining those streams. • Publication number: 20040075668
Abstract: A method of simultaneously transmitting a video signal and encoded data representing graphic images is disclosed. The invention is particularly applicable for transmitting multilingual subtitles with a video program. The graphic images are rectangular regions within the active video area. They are transmitted in the form of bitmaps. The invention not only allows any character font or size to be displayed, but also the definition of e.g. a program provider's logo. The encoded data includes a time stamp to specify the time at which a subtitle is to be displayed. Preferred embodiments of the invention include the transmission of colour-look-up-table (CLUT) data and a compatibility code indicating a required minimum number of entries of said colour-look-up-table. For receivers with a CLUT having more entries than necessary, a map table is transmitted for mapping the pixel data width to the input witdh of the relevant CLUT.

  • Patent number: 6701064
Abstract: A record carrier includes a first stream of data representing a video item, a second stream of data representing a graphics item, and a control program for controlling interactive playback of the items. The program has a first and a second program portion. The first program portion includes primary data, relating to shape properties of a graphics object. The second program portion is to be executed after the first program portion when user input complies with a predetermined condition specified in the program. The second program portion specifies a visual feedback in response to the user input and includes secondary data, relating to at least an additional visual property of the graphics object.

  • Publication number: 20030117529
Abstract: Video information intended to be reproduced on a television screen (1) often includes additional information such as graphics information (3) or subtitles (4) in addition to the main information such as film images (2). This additional information is transmitted separately, so that the user may choose whether the additional information is to be displayed or not. In the disclosed method the transmitted video signal comprises information relating to the duration (25) for which the additional information is to remain on the display. With this method the additional information can be displayed exactly for the duration of the desired time. When a video disc or tape is used for transferring video information, this is advantageous in trick modes, such as Fast Forward.

  • Publication number: 20030068159
Abstract: Method of contiguously recording a sequence of ordered A/V information signals, such as video/audio information, and corresponding management information signals, such as video management, menu information or file information, on a disc-like recording medium of the write-once type, such as an optically recordable and readable disc. The recorded information complies to the requirements of ordering of such information as defined by a disc of the read-only type or of the rewritable type. The method comprises allocating a reserved area within a linear addressing space of the disc, contiguously recording the A/V information signals in a video recording area located succeeding the reserved area, recording corresponding management data in a temporary overview space succeeding the video recording area, generating a mapping table for mapping the recorded management data to address locations in the reserved area and recording the mapping table in the temporary overview space.

  • Publication number: 20030063746
Abstract: The invention relates to a signal comprising a data stream 2, 3 containing copy free data 65-67, 71, 75, 77, 83-88 and to a storage medium 15 comprising such a signal. Furthermore, the invention relates to methods and devices for recording 1 and reproducing 17 such signals. In order to avoid illegal copying of data, copy free data is encoded with a copy free signature 76, 80, 92. Thus, it is possible to discern copy free recorded material from illegal bit-true copies of decrypted material.

  • Patent number: 6320825
Abstract: A method for recording audio information on a record carrier, typically a bitstream signal on an optical disc, is disclosed. In the method the audio information is encoded to compressed audio data having a variable bitrate, in particular using lossless compression. The compressed audio data is recorded at a transfer speed which is controlled in dependence on the variable bitrate. A transfer speed profile (53, 54, 55) is determined for items of audio information, e.g. for each track on a CD, in which profile the average transfer speed is higher than an average transfer speed minimally required to transfer the compressed audio data of said item. Stuffing data is added to the compressed audio data according to the transfer speed profile, and transfer speed profile information is recorded on the record carrier for enabling playback at a transfer speed as indicated by the transfer speed profile information. Also a recording device, a record carrier and a playback device are disclosed.

  • Patent number: 6111589
Abstract: Picture information intended for being displayed on a picture screen contains not only the main information such as film pictures, but also overlay information such as graphic information or subtitles. The overlay information is transmitted separately from the main information and is encoded in packets of digital symbols in which a page of overlay information is represented by a group of packets. All the packets include identification information sufficient for a receiver to identify whether all packets of a group have. This makes it possible to ascertain whether a page of overlay information has been received completely, which allows incomplete pages or combinations of parts of pages from being displayed on the picture screen. This is advantageous in the case of interruptions of picture signal reception, such as a disturbed TV signal, or when a video disc or tape is used in trick modes such as Fast Forward.
