  • Publication number: 20060239176
Abstract: A method and apparatus for processing a return path signal transmitted from a user device is described. In one example, an apparatus receives, and subsequently decodes, a return path signal that is transmitted from a user device. From the decoded signal, the type of user device transmitting the return path signal is determined. The apparatus then routes the return path signal to a media access control (MAC) processor that is specifically designed to process return path signals transmitted from the determined type of user device.

  • Publication number: 20060181429
Abstract: A system and method for providing expanded functionality from a remote control handset, wherein multiple command functions are effected by the actuation of a single key or control surface. A remote control handset is programmed to recognize the actuation of keys or control surfaces associated with multiple-functionality. In response to a standard actuation (such as the momentary depression of that key) of a multiple-functionality key, a primary remote control signal is generated by the remote control handset for purposes of controlling a first remote system or component. The remote control handset is further adapted to test for and recognize a non-standard actuation (such as double-clicking or prolonged depression) of a multiple-functionality key, and responsively generate a second remote control signal.

  • Publication number: 20060048202
Abstract: A method (500) for providing access to data at a consumer location (23). The consumer location (23) has a central consumer device (202) operable to access a data recording medium (402), a QAM interface (422) arranged for communication with a first remote consumer device (214), and a packet data interface (424) arranged for communication with a second remote consumer device (220). The method includes: arranging (502) for the central consumer device to receive the data from a broadband communication system; arranging (504) for storage of the received data on the data recording medium; arranging (506) for processing of a request in behalf of the first remote consumer device or the second remote consumer device, for access to the stored data; and arranging (508/510) for transmission of the stored data from the data recording medium to the requesting device via either the QAM interface or the packet data interface, as appropriate.

  • Publication number: 20050228311
Abstract: A biopsy marker introduction assembly is configured for introduction through a specimen retrieval recess into a probe cutter lumen of a handheld breast biopsy handle. Advancing the cutter causes an extending deployment rod to distally translate within an introducer tube of the introduction assembly, pushing a biopsy marker out of a distal end of the probe at a surgical biopsy site. Thereby, the surgeon is able to position the probe and effect deployment of the marker even if using the other hand to position an imaging device such as an ultrasonic transceiver.

  • Publication number: 20050160308
Abstract: A method for DVR (digital video recorder) recovery from interruptions is described. Interruptions include power failures, primary storage device failure, Emergency Alert broadcasts, loss of signal (LOS), etc. Upon detecting that an interruption has occurred, the DVR determines the duration of the interruption and consults a saved “journal” of DVR operations to determine what it was doing when the interruption occurred. If a program that was being recorded prior to the interruption is still running when the interruption ends, recording is resumed. If the interruption is long, then the DVR searches an electronic program guide to see if the program is available for re-recording at a later time. If so, it schedules re-recording at that time. Recovery methods for insufficient primary storage space are also described.

  • Publication number: 20050135779
Abstract: A method and apparatus for representing allocation of capacity of a storage unit within an audio/video (AV) recording device is described. In one example, a quantity of AV program data stored on the storage unit is determined. A storage schedule for new AV program data that is defined over a predetermined time period is obtained. A deletion schedule for old AV program data that is defined over the predetermined time period is obtained. Temporally dynamic indicia is produced that is representative of allocation of the capacity of the storage unit over the predetermined time period in response to the quantity of stored AV program data, the storage schedule, and the deletion schedule. A pictorial representation of the temporally dynamic indicia may then be displayed on a display coupled to the AV recording device.

  • Patent number: 5707382
Abstract: A surgical instrument having an elongated shaft to which is attached an inflatable balloon, commonly referred to a "balloon dissector", for dissecting a desired layer of internal bodily tissue from remaining tissue layers to create an operative space is disclosed. Alternatively, an instrument without a balloon can be used to perform a manual dissection. In one embodiment, the instrument has a tissue-contacting element in communication with the shaft distal end, and at least a portion of the tissue-contacting element is transparent. The instrument is adapted to receive an endoscope through its shaft and extend to adjacent the tissue-contacting element. The endoscope is supported and positioned in an extension assembly. The instrument provides for visualization using the endoscope as the instrument is advanced through tissue, but prevents direct contact between the tip of the endoscope containing the lens and the tissue.
