Abstract: In accordance with the teachings described herein, systems and methods are provided for always-on wireless IP communication. An access provider network (APN) that includes an always-on packet data serving node (PDSN) may be used to communicate over a wireless communication link with a mobile station. The PDSN may include an inactivity timer and may be used to set the inactivity timer to an inactivity timer starting value and send a starting value estimate to the mobile station over the wireless communication link, wherein the starting value estimate is a function of the inactivity timer starting value. The mobile station may include an inactivity timer estimate and may be used to receive the starting value estimate and set the inactivity timer estimate to the starting value estimate. The mobile station may also be used to reset the inactivity timer estimate to the starting value estimate when the mobile station communicates with the APN.

Abstract: In one illustrative example, a mobile communication device transmits a slot reservation indication to the wireless network for reserving each nth paging slot assigned to the mobile device. At some point in time, a page message request for paging the mobile device is received within the wireless network. A page message for paging the mobile device is refrained from being transmitted within a reserved paging slot, but rather within a subsequent paging slot assigned to the mobile device after a lapse of time associated with the reserved paging slot. During the slot reservation, the mobile device may perform a function such as a GPS location fix or network scanning operation.

Abstract: A method of inputting an electronic address into an address field on a communications device, the electronic address including a plurality of text characters and non-text symbol characters. The method includes: receiving a plurality of inputs for the address field through a user input interface of the device; adding text characters to the address field corresponding to the inputs; and detecting among the inputs repetitive successive inputs of a predetermined delimiter, selecting a non-text symbol character from a set of non-text symbol characters in dependence on a number of times the delimiter has been repetitively input without any intervening inputs, and adding the selected non-text symbol character to the address field.

Abstract: An apparatus, and an associated method, for facilitating paging of an access terminal. A hash function is performed at a network entity to form a hash value. The hash value is utilized to identify a paging packet that is to be populated with paging information. Once formed, the paging packet is sent as part of a superframe of packets. The access terminal also performs the hash function to determine to where to hash to search for the paging information.

Abstract: Herein are disclosed an apparatus and method of explicit indication of call from emergency call center. The method includes the steps of forming an emergency signal in relation to the mobile station terminated call; sending the emergency signal to the mobile station on behalf of the emergency call center; and detecting the emergency signal at the mobile station. The apparatus includes emergency signal forming means for forming an emergency signal in relation to the mobile station terminated call; emergency signal sending means for sending said emergency signal to the mobile station on behalf of the emergency call center; and emergency signal detecting means for detecting said emergency signal at the mobile station. A global emergency call information record is disclosed for use in cdma2000 type networks and the like. The apparatus and method may apply to other networks.

Abstract: The present invention relates generally to a manner by which to page an access terminal of a radio communication system to alert the access terminal of a pending call, or other communication. More particularly, the present invention relates to apparatus, and an associated method, that provides for the generation, sending, and analysis of a quick page message upon a paging channel, such as a QPCH (quick paging channel) defined in an exemplary cellular communication system. The page message is formed in a manner that reduces the likelihood of occurrence of false wakeup of an access terminal. Excessive battery depletion, as a result of false wakeup of the access terminal, is avoided.

Abstract: Methods are provided for a multi-mode mobile station to perform multi-mode system selection using a multi-mode system selection algorithm as a function of multi-mode overlay information. The multi-mode overlay information includes a plurality of associations, each association being between a respective set of systems that serve at least a common geographical area, at least some of the associations being between systems using differing radio access technology. Methods are also provided for a system to prepare multi-mode overlay information that includes a plurality of associations and send the multi-mode overlay information to the mobile station.

Abstract: An apparatus, and an associated method for paging an access terminal to alert the access terminal of a pending communication. A paging message is generated that includes both a partial identifier and a paging indicator bit. The paging message further includes a field that identifies the length of the partial identifier and a field that identifies how many partial identifiers are included in the message.

Abstract: A system and method of packet zone hysteresis for a mobile station is presented. When a short data burst is to be sent on the control channel, a check is made to see if packet zone hysteresis might have caused the PCF-PSDN interface to be torn down, and if necessary, this interface is re-established by performing a packet data service reconnect to thereby enable transmission of the short data burst.

Abstract: An apparatus, and an associated methodology for a communication system in which an access terminal is paged by a page sent on a paging channel. Hashes are generated by a hash generator at an access network to identify where in the paging message that page indications are to be positioned. And, hashes are generated at the access terminal to identify where in a received page that page indications are located.

Abstract: A method of identifying an emergency call received on a mobile device includes receiving a call from an emergency call center. In association with the call, an emergency signal is received, indicating that the call is an emergency call. Information is displayed on the mobile device to identify the emergency call.

Abstract: User interface methods and apparatus for processing voice call requests based on communication conditions of a mobile communication device are disclosed. The mobile communication device includes one or more processors, a wireless transceiver coupled to the one or more processors, and a user interface which includes a visual display. A voice call request for a voice call is received through the user interface. If the voice call request is received during an out-of-coverage condition of the mobile communication device, the processor causes a call denial indication to be displayed in the visual display, which indicates that the voice call request could not be completed. The processor also causes a call reminder setup prompt to be displayed, which may be accepted or declined through the user interface.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus for use in controlling scanning operations or a scan rate based on call appointments or reminders are disclosed. In one illustrative example, one or more processors of a mobile communication device are operative to identify whether a call appointment or reminder for a communication session to be established during a current time period is stored in the memory, and determine a scan rate for scanning operations of the wireless transceiver which varies based on whether the call appointment or reminder for the communication session to be established is identified. If the call appointment or reminder for the communication session to be established is identified, then the scan rate may be determined to be a first scan rate; otherwise the scan rate may be determined to be a second scan rate that is less than the first rate.

Abstract: Alert methods and apparatus for call appointments in a calendar application based on communication conditions of a mobile station are disclosed. Calendar information for an appointment in the calendar application is received and stored in memory. The calendar information is associated with a date and time of the appointment. In response to identifying an out-of-coverage condition of the mobile communication device within a predetermined time period of the date and time of the appointment, a warning indication is produced at a user interface of the mobile communication device. The warning indication may be or include a message which instructs a user of the mobile communication device to relocate the mobile communication device for removing the out-of-coverage condition, and may also include an audible or vibrating alert. The warning indication may be provided only if a telephone number or other suitable call information is identified within the calendar information.

Abstract: A method of providing certificate issuance and revocation checks involving mobile devices in a mobile ad hoc network (MANET). The wireless devices communicate with each other via Bluetooth wireless technology in the MANET, with an access point (AP) to provide connectivity to the Internet. A Certificate authority (CA) distributes certificates and certification revocation lists (CRLs) to the devices via the access point (AP). Each group of devices has the name of the group associated with the certificate and signed by the CA. A device that is out of the radio range of the access point may still connect to the CA to validate a certificate or download the appropriate CRL by having all the devices participate in the MANET.

Abstract: An apparatus and an associated method that facilitates improved buffering during a flow control event in a network that provides for a push function. A buffer timer is provided that coordinates a buffer in a PDSN (packet data serving node) with a second timer value. The second timer value comprises a retry timer value associated with a push function. Coordination of the buffer timer is provided by sending a control message from the push function, or from a mobile station, to a PDSN, (packet data serving node). The control message includes the timer retry value or a mobile timer value. The buffer timer is set in the PDSN to discard packets that are older than the retry timer value or mobile timer value during a flow control event.

Abstract: Apparatus, and an associated method for facilitating paging of an access terminal operable in a radio communication system. The access terminal is identified by part of a pseudorandom, or random, number, such as a session seed. The part of the number is included in the page message when the access terminal is to be paged. When included in the message, the access terminal detects the page and the part of the number contained therein that identifies the access terminal.

Abstract: In one illustrative example, a plurality of page message requests for a plurality of mobile devices which operate in a wireless communication network are received. One or more paging slots assigned to the mobile devices are identified for transmitting a plurality of page messages in response to these requests. However, the wireless network refrains from causing a page message for the mobile device associated with a tolerable delay indication to be transmitted within the one or more paging slots when a paging capacity limit of the one or more paging slots is reached. This allows higher priority page messages to be transmitted within the one or more paging slots. The wireless network subsequently causes a page message for the mobile device having the tolerable delay indication to be transmitted within one or more subsequent paging slots within a tolerable delay period corresponding to the tolerable delay indication.

Abstract: Apparatus, and an associated method, for facilitating paging of an access terminal operable in a radio communication system. Access-terminal assignment is provided by which to identify an access terminal that is to be page. A first-generated number is detected, such as an access-terminal-originated number. Selection is made as to whether to use the first-generated number. If selection is made not to use the first-generated number, a second number is instead used.

Abstract: Apparatus, and an associated method, for facilitating paging of an access terminal operable in a radio communication system. The access terminal is identified by a portion of an input number, such as a session seed, pseudorandom, or other, number. The portion of the input number is included in a paging message. When the access terminal receives the paging message, the access terminal determines whether the paging message includes the input number.
