Publication number: 20120026176Abstract: By selectively placing color filters with different transmittance spectrums on an array of modulator elements each having the same reflectance spectrum, a resultant reflectance spectrum for each modulator element and it's respective color filter is created. In one embodiment, the modulator elements in an array are manufactured by the same process so that each modulator element has a reflectance spectrum that includes multiple reflectivity lines. Color filters corresponding to multiple colors, such as red, green, and blue, for example, may be selectively associated with these modulator elements in order to filter out a desired wavelength range for each modulator element and provide a multiple color array. Because the modulator elements are manufactured by the same process, each of the modulator elements is substantially the same and common voltage levels may be used to activate and deactivate selected modulation.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 11, 2011Publication date: February 2, 2012Applicant: QUALCOMM MEMS Technologies, Inc.Inventor: William J. Cummings

Publication number: 20120002266Abstract: A package structure and method of packaging for an interferometric modulator. A thin film material is deposited over an interferometric modulator and transparent substrate to encapsulate the interferometric modulator. Publication number: 20110285683Abstract: This disclosure provides apparatus, systems, and methods for updating display devices. In one aspect, a line time addressing mode may be used to update the display by changing the amount of time that a common line has to address a display element. A shorter line time results in a higher frame rate, but may result in increased display errors. Therefore, an appropriate line time addressing mode may be selected based on the update rate of images to be displayed.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 18, 2011Publication date: November 24, 2011Applicant: QUALCOMM MEMS Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Mark M. Patent number: 8045252Abstract: A spatial light modulator comprises an integrated optical compensation structure, e.g., an optical compensation structure arranged between a substrate and a plurality of individually addressable light-modulating elements, or an optical compensation structure located on the opposite side of the light-modulating elements from the substrate. The individually addressable light-modulating elements are configured to modulate light transmitted through or reflected from the transparent substrate. Methods for making such spatial light modulators involve fabricating an optical compensation structure over a substrate and fabricating a plurality of individually addressable light-modulating elements over the optical compensation structure. The optical compensation structure may be a passive optical compensation structure.Type: GrantFiled: February 20, 2008Date of Patent: October 25, 2011Assignee: QUALCOMM MEMS Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Clarence Chui, Jeffrey B. Publication number: 20110221798Abstract: This disclosure provides systems, methods, and apparatus for reducing a frame write time or increasing a refresh rate of a display. In one aspect, displays may include a plurality of pixels arranged along segment lines and common lines, and all or a portion of the display may be driven in a manner which simultaneously addresses multiple common lines. Display resolution or color range of all or a portion of the display may thus be temporarily sacrificed in exchange for a reduced frame write time, enabling the use of higher refresh rates.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 11, 2011Publication date: September 15, 2011Applicant: QUALCOMM MEMS Technologies, Inc.Inventor: William J. Patent number: 8004504Abstract: A display element, such as an interferometric modulator, comprises a transparent conductor configured as a first electrode and a movable mirror configured as a second electrode. Advantageously, the partial reflector is positioned between the transparent conductor and the movable mirror. Because the transparent conductor serves as an electrode, the partial reflector does not need to be conductive. Accordingly, a greater range of materials may be used for the partial reflector. In addition, a transparent insulative material, such as a dielectric, may be positioned between the transparent conductor and the partial reflector in order to decrease a capacitance of the display element without changing a gap distance between the partial reflector and the movable mirror. Thus, a capacitance of the display element may be reduced without changing the optical characteristics of the display element.Type: GrantFiled: June 17, 2005Date of Patent: August 23, 2011Assignee: QUALCOMM MEMS Technologies, Inc.Inventors: William J. Cummings, Brian J. Gally

The second partial reflector is positioned at a second distance from said first partial reflector and forming a second optical resonant cavity therebetween. In various embodiments, the movable reflector is movable with respect to the first partial reflector to alter the first optical cavity. Other embodiments include a method of making devices.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 28, 2011Publication date: August 11, 2011Applicant: QUALCOMM MEMS TECHNOLOGIES, INC.Inventors: Brian J.
