    Abstract: Apparatus for transporting sheets of paper seriatim. The apparatus includes: a pair of parallel, rotatable, endless, flat belts having upper and lower reaches disposed substantially horizontally; a pair of supporting beams situated above the upper reaches of the pair of endless belts; a plurality of unbiased rollers seated in each of the supporting beams and resting on the flat belts with only their own weight; and a device for rotating the flat belts to thereby cause the sheets of paper to move with the upper reaches of the belts and the unbiased rollers, wherein the sheets of paper are caused to move entirely parallel to the belts without any skew caused by the unbiased rollers.

    Abstract: Apparatus for receiving sheets fed in a first direction and guiding and controlling the sheets through a right angle turn includes at least one right angle turn over module which includes a lower plate with an input belt assembly for receiving the first documents conveyed thereto in a first direction; an upper plate including a 45.degree. turn over section cantilevered above the lower plate, and a turning guide positioned adjacent to the turn over section. The upper plate includes a plurality of output rollers rotatably mounted in the top of the upper plate and oriented for moving sheets at a right angle direction to the first direction. The turning guide includes an upwardly curved edge that extends a fixed distance from the turn over section for guiding sheets around the turn over section. An output belt assembly is suspended above the upper plate for conveying sheets in a second direction that is orthogonal to the first direction.

    Abstract: Apparatus and method for variable opening of an envelope is disclosed. The apparatus includes a device for supporting the front panel and flap of an envelope in a plane, and a vacuum bar assembly situated above the supporting device, the assembly having a vacuum cup for gripping the back panel of the envelope. The apparatus includes a device for moving the vacuum cup downward to grip the envelope back panel and to move the cup upward a predetermined distance whereby the back panel is separated from the front panel to thereby open the envelope a predetermined amount. The apparatus also includes a measuring system for measuring the thickness of successive collations, and means responsive to the measuring system for controlling the amount of movement of the vacuum cups so that the predetermined amount of movement thereof varies from envelope to envelope to open each successive envelope only the amount required to accept the collation intended for that envelope.

    Abstract: Apparatus for receiving multiple first documents cut from a single sheet that are being fed side by side in a first direction and individually guiding and controlling the first documents through a right angle turn includes a plurality of right angle turn over modules. Each of such modules includes a lower plate having input structure at one end for receiving the first documents conveyed thereto in a first direction and an upper plate mounted a fixed distance above the lower plate. The upper plate includes a turn over section adjacent to a downstream end of the input structure and angled at 45.degree. to the first direction. The upper plate also includes a plurality of output rollers rotatably mounted in the top of the upper plate and oriented for moving the first documents at a direction orthogonal to the first direction.

    Abstract: Apparatus for receiving sheets fed in a first direction and guiding and controlling the sheets through a right angle turn includes a lower plate having input belt assembly at one end for receiving documents conveyed thereto in a first direction and an upper plate cantilevered a fixed distance above the lower plate. The upper plate includes a turn over section adjacent to a downstream end of the input belt assembly and angled at 45.degree. to the first direction. The upper plate further includes at least one idler roller superposed over the input belt assembly for cooperating with the input belt assembly for transporting sheets received by the input belt assembly through the turn over section. There is a turning guide positioned adjacent the turn over section. The turning guide includes an upwardly curved edge that extends a fixed distance from the turn over section for guiding sheets around the turn over section.

    Abstract: In accordance with the present invention apparatus for inserting enclosures into an envelope comprises an insertion section and an envelope staging section located upstream and below the insertion section. The envelope staging section includes structure for holding and forwarding an envelope fed from an envelope feeder. Envelope transport structure transports an envelope forwarded from the envelope staging section to the insertion section. The envelope transport structure includes a vacuum deck located at the insertion section and a vacuum drum located between the envelope staging section and the vacuum deck. The envelope transport structure further includes a plurality of envelope transport belts operating in cooperation with the vacuum drum and the vacuum deck. A plurality of backstops are located at the downstream end of the insertion section. A pivoting sucker bar assembly lifts open a top panel of the envelope when the envelope is against the backstops.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for nest folding at least one smaller document of a collation while folding larger documents of the collation comprises the steps of: providing a buckle chute folder having a plurality of buckle chutes with one of the buckle chutes including a kicker structure adjacent a buckle chute stop; transporting to the buckle chute folder a collation having documents of at least two sizes; feeding the collation into the buckle chute having the kicker structure; buckling the larger of the documents into a nip of fold rollers as the lead edge of the collation hits the buckle chute stop; bouncing the smaller of the documents out of the buckle chute as the larger of the documents enter the nip of the fold rollers; and completing the first fold of the larger documents with the smaller documents nested within the first fold.

    Abstract: In accordance with the present invention a system for transporting, deskewing and stopping and envelope, comprises a plurality of laterally spaced, continuously moving, endless transport belts and a stationary vacuum deck having longitudinal grooves, each of which accommodates an upper reach of one of the continuously moving transport belts. The vacuum deck includes a plurality of vacuum ports arranged in longitudinal rows, each of which is adjacent at least one of the transport belts. A plurality of stop members are located at the downstream end of the vacuum deck. Vacuum at the vacuum ports urge an envelope against the continuously moving belts which transport the envelope to the stop members whereby the envelope is stopped and maintained in a deskewed position.

    Abstract: In accordance with the present invention a vacuum and belt document handling system comprises first structure for transporting individual documents along a document path in a first direction, second structure downstream from the first structure for transporting the individual documents in a second direction along the document path, and a vacuum drum having a peripheral section located between the first and second structure. The vacuum drum includes a plurality of non-rotating sections having stationary vacuum ports at the peripheral section and further includes a plurality of pulleys, each of which support an upper reach of an endless belt at the peripheral section of the vacuum drum between the first and second structure. The system further comprises a plenum shaft to which the non-rotating section of the vacuum drum is fixedly secured and the pulleys are rotatably secured. The plenum shaft is connected to a vacuum source and the stationary vacuum ports are connected to holes in the plenum shaft.

The apparatus includes: a device for supporting adjacent sheets of material; a vacuum cup for acquiring one of the adjacent sheets of material, the vacuum cup having a circumferential inner wall with an opening adjacent the one sheet of material and a circumferential outer wall coaxial with and surrounding but spaced from the inner wall, wherein the inner wall closes the end of the outer wall adjacent the one sheet of material, and wherein the outer wall includes a flexible, corrugated section enabling the outer wall to collapse in the axial direction; and a device to create separate vacuums within the inner wall and the outer wall, wherein the vacuum within the inner wall causes the vacuum cup to acquire the one material sheet and the vacuum within the outer wall causes the cup to collapse and move away from the supporting device to thereby separate the one material sheet from its adjacent sheets.
