    Abstract: An apparatus for allocating data usage in an embedded dynamic random access memory (DRAM) device is disclosed. The apparatus for allocating data usages within an embedded dynamic random access memory (DRAM) device comprises a control analysis circuit, a data/command flow circuit, and a partition management control. The control analysis circuit generates an allocation signal in response to processing performances of a processor. Coupled to an embedded DRAM device, the data/command flow circuit controls data flow from the processor to the embedded DRAM device. The partition management control, coupled to the control analysis circuit, partitions the embedded DRAM device into a first partition and a second partition. The data stored in the first partition are different from the data stored in the second partition according to their respective usage. The allocation percentages of the first and second partitions are dynamically allocated by the allocation signal from the control analysis circuit.

    Abstract: A method of operating a multi-level memory hierarchy of a computer system and apparatus embodying the method, wherein instructions issue having an explicit prefetch request directly from an instruction sequence unit to a prefetch unit of the processing unit. The invention applies to values that are either operand data or instructions. These prefetch requests can be demand load requests, where the processing unit will need the operand data or instructions, or speculative load requests, where the processing unit may or may not need the operand data or instructions, but a branch prediction or stream association predicts that they might be needed. Further branch predictions or stream associations that were made based on an earlier speculative choice are linked by using a tag pool which assigns a bit fields in the tag pool entries to the level of speculation depth. Each entry shares in common the bit field values associated with earlier branches or stream associations.

    Abstract: A hazard prediction array consists of an array of saturating counters. The array is indexed through a portion of the instruction address. At issue, the hazard prediction array is referenced and a prediction is made as to whether the current instruction or group of instructions is likely to encounter a flush. If the prediction is that it will flush, the instruction is not issued until it is the next instruction to complete. If the prediction is that the instruction will not flush, it is issued as normal. At completion time, the prediction array is updated with the actual flush behavior. When an instruction is predicted to flush and, thus, not issued until it is the next to complete, the predictor may be updated as if the instruction did not flush.

    Abstract: A partitioned cache and management method for selectively caching data by type improves the efficiency of a cache memory by partitioning congruence class sets for storage of particular data types such as operating system routines and data used by those routines. By placing values for associated applications into different partitions in the cache, values can be kept simultaneously available in cache with no interference that would cause deallocation of some values in favor of newly loaded values. Additionally, placing data from unrelated applications in the same partition can be performed to allow the cache to rollover values that are not needed simultaneously.
