  • Patent number: 6904028
Abstract: There is disclosed a system and method for sending intermittent messages on the A3 interface to provide, for use in a base station, a message transfer system for transmitting and receiving intermittent messages. The transfer system comprises i) a controller for inserting an intermittent message into a data frame; ii) a selection distribution unit in the base station for receiving and processing the intermittent messages; and iii) a transmitter for sending data frames with the intermittent message inserted to other base stations via the A3 interface.

  • Publication number: 20030211848
Abstract: A system and method is disclosed for providing service negotiation during a hard handoff of a mobile station to a target base station in a wireless communication system. The target base station negotiates a Service Option with the mobile station using service negotiation messages. The mobile station receives the Service Option from the target base station and uses the Service Option to communicate with the target base station. The target base station and the mobile station each comprise a service negotiation controller that is capable of exchanging service negotiation messages to negotiate the Service Option for the mobile station.

  • Publication number: 20030142648
Abstract: A system and method is disclosed for providing a continuous high speed packet data handoff for a mobile station in a wireless network. The system comprises a packet data handoff controller in a source base station that is capable of handing off high speed packet data on a supplemental channel. The packet data handoff controller executes a handoff by sending handoff messages that contain supplemental channel configuration information and Radio Link Protocol (RLP) configuration information. The packet data handoff controller activates a non-retransmission mode of the Radio Link Protocol (RLP). The target base station receives the high speed packet data call starting at a selected Radio Link Protocol (RLP) frame.

  • Publication number: 20030119518
Abstract: A base station controller in a wireless system is comprised of a set of vocoders that are TTY/TDD Baudot code-capable in addition to the non-TTY/TDD Baudot code-capable vocoders. The base station selects one of the two types of vocoders to communicate with the mobile station based on the capabilities of a mobile station that is communicating with the base station. The mobile station can indicate its capabilities by transmitting its unique identification for use by the wireless system in searching a database of TTY/Baudot code-capable mobile stations.

  • Publication number: 20030119507
Abstract: A system and method is disclosed for providing rescue channel communications between base stations in a wireless communication system. The invention comprises a source base station that is capable of sending messages to a rescue base station to cause the rescue base station to establish a rescue channel for a mobile station that has lost its traffic channel. The messages for establishing rescue channels communications between the base stations comprise Internetwork Operating System (IOS) messages that have been modified to add rescue channel indicator information. In an alternate advantageous embodiment of the invention, specially designed rescue channel activation messages and rescue channel activation acknowledgment messages are used to establish a rescue channel for the mobile station.

  • Publication number: 20030112821
Abstract: A system and method is disclosed for increasing a data transmission rate in mobile wireless communication channels. The invention comprises a base station that is capable of sending data packets to a mobile station at a first data rate and then sending replacement data packets to the mobile station at a second higher data rate to replace missing or error data packets. The mobile station comprises a replacement data packet controller that replaces missing or error data packets with replacement data packets. During a handoff of the mobile station a first base station sends an A3 physical transition directive message to a second base station to increase bandwidth on a supplemental channel for sending replacement data packets to the mobile station. The bandwidth is decreased after the mobile station receives the replacement data packets.
