  • Publication number: 20130144422
Abstract: A method and system for producing a dental implant surgical guide is disclosed. A patient-specific virtual model is generated using image data specific to a patient and virtual dental implants. The virtual model aligns the image data with the virtual dental implants using modeling software. A virtual mold is generated from the virtual model, and a physical mold is generated from the virtual mold. The physical mold is covered with a thermoplastic sheet via a thermoforming process. Excess thermoplastic material is trimmed off after the thermoforming process to produce a thermoformed piece. Metal tubes corresponding to each the virtual dental implants are placed onto the physical mold denoting the position, trajectory, and depth of the one or more virtual dental implants. A dental implant surgical guide that contains the thermoformed piece with the one or more tubes is produced.

  • Patent number: 8446410
Abstract: Embodiments of the invention provide systems and methods for generating combined image data representing a volumetric image of a subject and a color textured external surface of the subject. According to one embodiment, two-dimensional image data of a surface of the subject can be obtained from a two-dimensional imager. Volumetric data of the subject can be obtained from a volumetric scanner. The two-dimensional imager can have a known optical property and physical position relative to the volumetric scanner. External surface mesh data can be generated based on the volumetric data. The two-dimensional image data can be mapped to the external surface mesh data based on the known physical position of the two-dimensional imager and the volumetric scanner. Display image data including the two-dimensional image data mapped to the external surface map data combined with the volumetric data can be generated and displayed.

  • Patent number: 8401826
Abstract: Modeling pontics at successive treatment stages includes: (1) calculating space measurements between first and second teeth by getting first and second tooth transformations at a treatment stage i; (2) applying the first and second tooth transformations to get positions of the first and second teeth at the stage i; (3) calculating a direction vector of the space measurements at the stage i; (4) calculating a reference plane using the direction vector as a normal; (5) determining whether the space is available for a pontic by measuring the distance from the closest point on each of the first and second teeth to the reference plane; (6) generating an original pontic geometry for a first treatment stage; and (7) generating pontic geometries at each successive stage by calculating deformation parameters based on the original pontic geometry and size characteristics of the space and of the first and second teeth at each stage.

  • Publication number: 20130023888
Abstract: A dental implant surgical guide system is disclosed. A surgical guide is placed onto a patient's mouth. The surgical guide has one or more tubes for accepting detachable drill guide heads. The detachable drill guide heads are placed into a tube of the surgical guide using a handle. The handle has an attach/detach mechanism. A first drill guide head having a first inner diameter is attached to the handle to guide drilling of a first hole. The first drill guide head is removed using the attach/detach mechanism to accept a second drill guide head having a second inner diameter to guide drilling of a second hole.

  • Patent number: 7689398
Abstract: In accordance with various aspects of the present invention, system and method for modeling and application of interproximal reduction (IPR) of teeth to facilitate orthodontic treatment is provided. In accordance with an exemplary embodiment, a system and method for modeling and application of IPR are configured within a treatment methodology that initially determines whether stripping is needed for two neighboring teeth. If stripping is necessary, the exemplary method for modeling and application of IPR is conducted. In an exemplary embodiment, a stripping plane or other surface is constructed to determine the amount and region of stripping for two neighboring teeth, in other words, the volume to be removed between two neighboring teeth. After stripping of the tooth, the tooth geometry can be reconstructed to enable application of the IPR tooth model, such as enabling the clinician to utilize the IPR tooth model for teeth movement planning.

  • Publication number: 20080286715
Abstract: An impression tray includes a tray holder; a U-shaped body coupled to the tray holder; and a plurality of indicators positioned on the tray holder and the U-shaped body. The impression tray allows the scanning process to be simplified as the indicators are used for registering the scanned model to patient anatomy. Doctors can examine the scan of the patient first and then make decision for surgical guide. The fabrication system setup is relatively simple. There is no specialized orientation jig. Regardless of the position of the stone model, the coordinates of the drill can be easily calculated.

  • Publication number: 20080154419
Abstract: In accordance with various aspects of the present invention, systems and methods for representation, modeling and/or application of pontic geometry of teeth to facilitate orthodontic treatment are provided. Such systems and methods for representation, modeling and application of pontic geometry of teeth can automatically facilitate a changeable and stage-dependent pontic geometry that provides various advantages over conventional methods for providing pontics. In accordance with an exemplary embodiment, a system and method for representation, modeling and/or application of pontic geometry automatically detects for the potential location for one or more pontics, i.e., for spaces between the teeth of a patient. Once a desired location for a pontic is automatically determined, an original pontic geometry is automatically generated. Thereafter, stage dependent pontic geometries are automatically generated and positioned during the stages of treatment if pontic is desirable.
