Publication number: 20130144422Abstract: A method and system for producing a dental implant surgical guide is disclosed. A patient-specific virtual model is generated using image data specific to a patient and virtual dental implants. The virtual model aligns the image data with the virtual dental implants using modeling software. A virtual mold is generated from the virtual model, and a physical mold is generated from the virtual mold. The physical mold is covered with a thermoplastic sheet via a thermoforming process. Excess thermoplastic material is trimmed off after the thermoforming process to produce a thermoformed piece. Metal tubes corresponding to each the virtual dental implants are placed onto the physical mold denoting the position, trajectory, and depth of the one or more virtual dental implants. A dental implant surgical guide that contains the thermoformed piece with the one or more tubes is produced.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 5, 2011Publication date: June 6, 2013Inventors: Woncheol Choi, Jia Leung Jeff Mar

Patent number: 7689398Abstract: In accordance with various aspects of the present invention, system and method for modeling and application of interproximal reduction (IPR) of teeth to facilitate orthodontic treatment is provided. In accordance with an exemplary embodiment, a system and method for modeling and application of IPR are configured within a treatment methodology that initially determines whether stripping is needed for two neighboring teeth. If stripping is necessary, the exemplary method for modeling and application of IPR is conducted. In an exemplary embodiment, a stripping plane or other surface is constructed to determine the amount and region of stripping for two neighboring teeth, in other words, the volume to be removed between two neighboring teeth. After stripping of the tooth, the tooth geometry can be reconstructed to enable application of the IPR tooth model, such as enabling the clinician to utilize the IPR tooth model for teeth movement planning.Type: GrantFiled: August 30, 2006Date of Patent: March 30, 2010Assignee: Align Technology, Inc.Inventors: Jihua Cheng, Woncheol Choi, Vadim Matov

Publication number: 20080286715Abstract: An impression tray includes a tray holder; a U-shaped body coupled to the tray holder; and a plurality of indicators positioned on the tray holder and the U-shaped body. The impression tray allows the scanning process to be simplified as the indicators are used for registering the scanned model to patient anatomy. Doctors can examine the scan of the patient first and then make decision for surgical guide. The fabrication system setup is relatively simple. There is no specialized orientation jig. Regardless of the position of the stone model, the coordinates of the drill can be easily calculated.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 16, 2007Publication date: November 20, 2008Inventor: Woncheol Choi

Publication number: 20080154419Abstract: In accordance with various aspects of the present invention, systems and methods for representation, modeling and/or application of pontic geometry of teeth to facilitate orthodontic treatment are provided. Such systems and methods for representation, modeling and application of pontic geometry of teeth can automatically facilitate a changeable and stage-dependent pontic geometry that provides various advantages over conventional methods for providing pontics. In accordance with an exemplary embodiment, a system and method for representation, modeling and/or application of pontic geometry automatically detects for the potential location for one or more pontics, i.e., for spaces between the teeth of a patient. Once a desired location for a pontic is automatically determined, an original pontic geometry is automatically generated. Thereafter, stage dependent pontic geometries are automatically generated and positioned during the stages of treatment if pontic is desirable.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 22, 2006Publication date: June 26, 2008Inventors: Jihua Cheng, Vadim Matov, Eric Kuo, Woncheol Choi
