  • Patent number: 8750569
Abstract: A nuclear imaging system (10) includes a crystal identification system (40) which receives a flood image (30) which includes a plurality of peaks, each peak responsive to radiation detected by a corresponding scintillator crystal. A crystal identification processor (42) partitions the flood image (30) into a plurality of regions (56), each region being masked to correspond to one of an array of nuclear detectors. A model image (62) is generated in which the at least one Gaussian models represents the identified peaks. Misidentified peaks in the model image (62) in which locations of the peaks in the flood image (30) differ from the corresponding scintillator crystal are determined and the locations of the misidentified peaks in the flood image (30) are corrected. A calibration processor (43) corrects geometric distortions in acquired projection data according to the corrected peaks.

  • Publication number: 20140106258
Abstract: Truncated ditetragonal gold prisms (Au TDPs) are synthesized by adding a dilute solution of gold seeds to a growth solution, and allowing the growth to proceed to completion. The Au TDPs exhibit the face-centered cubic crystal structure and are bounded by 12 high-index {310} facets. The Au TDPs may be used as heterogeneous catalysts as prepared, or may be used as substrates for subsequent deposition of an atomically thin layer of a platinum group metal catalyst. When the Au TDPs are used as substrates, the atomically thin layer of metal reproduces the high-index facets of the Au TDPs.

  • Patent number: 8690063
Abstract: An apparatus and method electro-optically read indicia, such as a direct part marking (DPM) code, that is raised or sunken relative to a target surface on a target. A solid-state, distance imaging sensor captures a target image comprised of a first set of pixels having first distance values that correspond to a first distance of the code from the sensor, and a second set of pixels having second distance values that correspond to a second distance of the target surface from the sensor. A controller reads the indicia by distinguishing between the first set of pixels and the second set of pixels within the image, by determining abrupt changes in the distance values among neighboring pixels.

  • Publication number: 20140081676
Abstract: A system and method are provided to communicate insurance information to a user via a networked-based system. The method may comprise receiving application details from a user which are then processed to identify a plurality of available insurance plans for the user. Thereafter, a recommended group of plans from the available plans may be identified based on historical insurance plan data which identifies which insurance plans received a number of approved applications exceeding a predefined threshold of applications. The recommended group is then presented via the networked-based system to the user via a GUI. The GUI may include an icon to identify insurance plans that received a number of applications exceeding the predefined threshold of applications, and a plurality of further icons. When a user moves a graphical pointer over an icon, a window including brief information related to the insurance plan benefit may be displayed.

  • Publication number: 20140076819
Abstract: New multifunctional synthetic nanoparticles are adapted for water treatment, with environmentally-functional layers, optional capping layers, and synthetic antiferromagnetic cores. With high surface-to-volume ratio, these nanoparticles are very efficient in water treatment, including but not restricted to water disinfection, photo-catalytic degradation, contaminant adsorption, etc., in the context of drinking water or waste water treatment. Meanwhile, their magnetic cores are highly magnetically responsive and can be separated by 99% within 10 min using simply a permanent magnet. Moreover, once some non-degradable chemicals (like perfluorinated compounds) are absorbed to the particle surface, these chemicals can be further degraded by introducing hyperthermia or eddy current heating. These particles can be redispersed after the external magnetic field is removed, and can therefore be used in a regenerative treatment process, substantially reducing the cost while eliminating contaminated byproducts.

  • Publication number: 20130315454
Abstract: A nuclear imaging system includes a crystal identification system which receives a flood image which includes a plurality of peaks, each peak responsive to radiation detected by a corresponding scintillator crystal. A crystal identification processor partitions the flood image into a plurality of candidate regions with a watershed segmentator implementing a watershed algorithm. The candidate regions are linked in an adjacency graph, and then classified as background or relevant, where relevant regions contain a peak within the watershed lines. The regions are then assigned to a crystal according to an objective function and an assignability score. A calibration processor maps the peaks to a rectangular grid.
