  • Publication number: 20160071537
Abstract: A method for manufacturing a bit patterned magnetic media for magnetic data recording. The method includes selectively depositing a self assembled monolayer over a seed layer and then oxidizing the deposited self assembled monolayer. The self-assembled monolayer can be deposited by use of a stamp to form a pattern covering areas where a non-magnetic segregant (such as an oxide) is to be formed and openings where a magnetic material is to be formed. A magnetic alloy and a segregant (such as an oxide) are then co-sputtered. The magnetic alloy grows only or selectively over the seed layer, whereas the segregant grows only or selectively over the oxidized self-assembled monolayer.

  • Patent number: 9144817
Abstract: A system for preventing the accumulation of excess lubrication in the form of lubricant lines on magnetic media disks for hard disk drives uses a mandrel design that produces negligible surface waves when the disks are dipped in lubricant baths. The mandrel has inverted tear drop shaped supports for the disks. The supports are smaller in overall size than an inner diameter hole formed in the disks and diminish the formation of waves in the lubricant bath.

  • Patent number: 8941944
Abstract: A method of radially positioning a heat assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) head writes data to a first band, wherein a radial position of the HAMR head within each data track is defined by a positional bias and a track location. A determination is made regarding whether a threshold has been reached with respect to the first band. If the write threshold has been reached with respect to the first band, then the positional bias associated with the first band is modified to evenly distribute thermal exposure of data tracks in the first band.

  • Publication number: 20140231385
Abstract: A method for manufacturing a magnetic media having an extremely thin lubricant layer on a magnetic media. The thin lubricant layer decreases magnetic spacing to maximize magnetic performance of the magnetic data recording system. The lubricant layer is formed by first depositing a lubricant that includes two different lubricant materials, one bonded and the other non-bonded. After lubricant deposition a burnishing process can be performed, with the lubricant being thick enough for effective burnishing. Then, the disk is exposed to a solvent vapor, which removes most of the lubricant leaving only a very thin layer of the bonded lubricant material.

  • Patent number: 8727832
Abstract: Cleaning or polishing magnetic recording media (MRM) may comprise mounting and rotating the MRM on a spindle; circulating a tape adjacent to a surface of the MRM; and applying an electrostatic (ES) voltage to the tape and attracting particles located on the MRM to the tape. The ES voltage may apply an ES load to the tape to force the tape into contact with the surface of the MRM. No mechanical load may be applied to the tape to force the tape into contact with the surface of the MRM. Additionally, a mechanical load may be applied to the tape to force the tape into contact with the surface of the MRM.

  • Patent number: 8722213
Abstract: Lubricant with non-terminal functional groups. The location of the functional groups minimizes free chain length and molecular weight of a lubricant while simultaneously maximizing evaporation temperature. The locations of the functional groups to the backbone of the molecule of the lubricant allows for shorter lengths of free backbone length between functional groups attached to a lubricated surface. The lubricant lubricates mechanical devices including hard disk drives. The lubricant can also be added to media or other mechanical parts in conjunction with other lubricants.

  • Patent number: 8585912
Abstract: A batch vapor deposition process for applying adhesion promoter during manufacturing of nanoimprinted discrete track media and bit-patterned media, and mono-molecular layer lubricant on magnetic recording media are disclosed. The adhesion promoter is simultaneously coated on both sides of numerous disk substrates, and minimal solution is wasted. In another step, the lubricant is applied at a uniform thickness that is on the order of a single molecular layer. The lubricant is also applied on the entire disk surfaces while processing multiple disks at a time. Batch processing increases throughput, and vapor lubricant reduces costs compared to conventional techniques. Limited air exposure controls bonding and monolayer adsorption guarantees uniformity.
