    Abstract: The present disclosure provides systems and methods associated with mode conversion for electromagnetic field modification. A mode converting structure (holographic metamaterial) is formed with a distribution of dielectric constants chosen to convert an electromagnetic radiation pattern from a first mode to a second mode to attain a target electromagnetic radiation pattern that is different from the input electromagnetic radiation pattern. A solution to a holographic equation provides a sufficiently accurate approximation of a distribution of dielectric constants that can be used to form a mode converting device for use with one or more transmission lines, such as waveguides. One or more optimization algorithms can be used to improve the efficiency of the mode conversion.

    Abstract: Methods and system for performing magnetic induction tomography imaging of an object are provided. An apparatus includes an array of unit cells and a control circuit coupled to the array of unit cells. The array of unit cells can generate a first magnetic field using an excitation pattern in the direction of a target object and sense a second magnetic field induced in the target object by the first magnetic field. The control circuit can determine a minimum of the first magnetic field. The minimum may correspond to a higher conductivity region of the target object. The control circuit can adjust the excitation pattern based on the higher conductivity region of the target object.

    Abstract: A three-dimensional map of an environment with buildings is used to computationally predict locations and times of global navigation satellite system (GNSS) blockages. For example, in urban environments some of the GNSS satellites are occluded by buildings. These blockages can be modeled. A computing system can make a map showing which satellites are or are not visible as a function both of location and time. The map can be used by a mobile GNSS receiver to determine which satellites to use or whether to use a backup system for navigation. The system can determine when a given satellite will enter or leave a GNSS receiver view during a route. The map can be stored in the GNSS receiver (or a host of the GNSS) or can be stored by a network service. This mapping can be used to predict multi-path effects of a satellite transmission at a location.

    Abstract: A three-dimensional map of an environment with buildings is used to computationally predict locations and times of global navigation satellite system (GNSS) transmission quality. A global navigation satellite system (GNSS) receiver can reconcile received satellite transmissions with these predicted satellite transmissions. By comparing actual transmission quality with predicted transmission quality, a system can determine unmodeled obstructions, temporary obstructions, jamming, spoofing or other origins of interference with predicted transmission quality of a satellite in a GNSS.

A voxel-based discretization of the distribution of dielectric constants can be used to generate the mode converting structure and/or to facilitate the optimization algorithms. One or more optimization algorithms can be used to improve the efficiency of the mode conversion.

    Abstract: Described embodiments include a system and a method. A system includes an electromagnetic structure having a surface and a radiofrequency electromagnetic field source. The field source includes electronically controllable, artificially structured electromagnetic unit cells configured to create quasi-static electromagnetic fields within the electromagnetic structure. Each unit cell is responsive to a control signal. A selector circuit selects a quasi-static electromagnetic field pattern creating a high contrast electric field in a subwavelength electromagnetic cavity and is defined by the surface of the electromagnetic structure and an exterior surface of a perturbing object. The high contrast electric field has a power density that is localized to a volume adjoining the exterior surface of the perturbing object. A field pattern implementation circuit generates the control signal assigning electromagnetic field characteristic to each of the electromagnetic unit cells.

A kinematics circuit determines an incremental slide or slip of the wheel relative to the surface. A fraction status circuit combines at least two instances of the incremental slide or slip into data indicative of a slide or slip by the terrestrial vehicle relative to the surface.
