  • Publication number: 20110128653
Abstract: Swaging a suspension base plate to an actuator arm for a hard disk drive. A portion of material adjacent to a hole in the actuator arm is removed to create an opening to receive material. A flange of the suspension base plate is inserted into the hole in the actuator arm. The suspension base plate is swaged to the actuator arm, wherein the swaging causes material from the suspension base plate to flow into the opening.

  • Patent number: 7477488
Abstract: A head suspension for a head/gimbal assembly comprises a flexure attached to a load beam. The load beam includes a lifter tab configured to engage a lifting surface of a load/unload ramp. The flexure includes a limiter tab, extending from a trailing edge thereof, that is configured to engage with a gimbal-limiting surface of the load/unload ramp. The limiter tab comprises a metallic base layer, a metallic stiffening layer, and a non-metallic intermediate layer disposed between the base and stiffening layers. The stiffening layer can include both conductive traces that terminate with a set of bonding pads and an appendage that extends along a length of the limiter tab. The appendage portion of the stiffening layer serves to increase the thickness of the limiter tab to increase the stiffness of the limiter tab.

  • Patent number: 7149054
Abstract: A head suspension for a reverse flow disk drive. The head suspension includes a load beam having a mounting region at a proximal end, a rigid region at a distal end and a spring region between the mounting region and the rigid region. A flexure is mounted on the distal end of the rigid region. A slider is mounted on the flexure. The slider has a proximal end closest to the proximal end of the load beam, wherein the spring region, the rigid region, the flexure and the slider comprise an active portion. One or more read/write heads are located on the proximal end of the slider. A plurality of electrical traces extend along the head suspension to the proximal end of the slider. At least one airflow attenuator is provided that creates a region of reduced airflow velocity proximate at least a portion of the active portion. An actuator assembly and to a reverse flow disk drive are also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 6965499
Abstract: A head suspension or head suspension component article configured for solder ball bonding of a head slider to electrical traces on article. The article including electrical traces formed from electrically conductive material with the electrical traces having a bonding region adapted for electrical bonding to a head slider. Also included is a support structure providing support for at least portions of the electrical traces and including a head slider mounting region adapted to receive the head slider. This structure is configured to mechanically and thermally isolate the bonding region of the electrical traces from the head slider mounting region to reduce mechanical and thermal effects of a solder ball bonding process on the article during solder ball bonding of the head slider to the electrical traces. The support structure may be reduced at or around the bonding region, or the conductive material may be increased to dissipate more heat.

  • Patent number: 6351350
Abstract: A shock limiter system for a head suspension configured to engage with an external structure in a rigid disk drive. The head suspension has a flexure with a head slider oriented in a first direction over a disk surface. The head suspension includes a load beam having a mounting region, a rigid region and a spring region located between the mounting region and rigid region. The rigid region and the flexure define a distal region of the head suspension. The shock limiter system comprises a shock limiter extending from the distal region in a second direction generally opposite the first direction. The shock limiter is positioned on the distal region to engage with the external structure to limit movement of the head suspension away from the disk surface during a shock event.
