  • Patent number: 9155075
Abstract: In an embodiment, a UE determines to transmit a message (e.g., an alert message, a call initiation message). Based on the type of the message to be transmitted, the UE selectively transmits supplemental data configured to prompt an access network to transition the UE to a dedicated channel state (DCS). In another embodiment, an application server configured to arbitrate communication sessions between UEs receives a message for transmission to a target UE. Based on the type of the message to be transmitted to the target UE, the application server selectively transmits, to a serving access network of the target UE, supplemental data configured to prompt the serving access network to transition the target UE to the DCS. In another embodiment, the access network selectively transitions a target UE to the DCS based on whether differently sized messages are received at the access network for transmission to the target UE.

  • Publication number: 20150163848
Abstract: The connection management entity apparatus determines a set of modems within coverage of a particular area. Each modem of the set of modems is associated with a particular aircraft and one carrier of a plurality of carriers. The apparatus allocates subsets of modems to each eNB of a set of eNBs. The allocation allows each eNB to communicate with the allocated subset of modems. Each eNB operates on a different carrier. The apparatus may be a eNB. The eNB determines a set of modems within coverage of the eNB. The set of modems is associated with one carrier of a plurality of carriers. The eNB operates on the one carrier. Each modem in the set of modems is associated with a different aircraft. The eNB sends information indicating the set of modems and receives an allocation of a second set of modems in response to the sent information.

  • Publication number: 20150156748
Abstract: Methods and apparatuses for multicasting within a wireless communications system are disclosed. In one embodiment a method of multicasting within a wireless communications system operating in accordance with a given wireless communication protocol includes monitoring multicast messages associated with a given multicast session in a first sector. A handoff occurs from the first sector to a second sector. It is determined whether the second sector is transmitting multicast messages associated with the given multicast session. Then, based on the determination, a registration request for the given multicast session within the second sector is transmitted on a reverse link access channel in an earlier slot than a next designated slot for registration requests as defined by the wireless communication protocol.

  • Patent number: 8929399
Abstract: In an embodiment, a network device obtains a plurality of data packets that are each associated with one of a plurality of different streams, wherein each of the plurality of obtained data packets includes a header portion with stream-specific routing information. The network device strips the stream-specific routing information from the plurality of obtained data packets to produce a plurality of stream-specific payload portions, which are merged into a shared payload portion of a stream-multiplexed data packet that includes common routing information for the plurality of streams in a common header portion. The network device transmits the stream-multiplexed packet to a target device, and the target device determines whether any of the plurality of different streams are relevant to the target UE based on stream-mapping information contained in the stream-multiplexed packet, and selectively decodes and processes the stream-specific payload portions corresponding based on the determination.

  • Patent number: 8848553
Abstract: In an embodiment, a user equipment (UE) determines to initiate a communication session with at least one other UE to be arbitrated by an application server. The UE determines a type of the communication session (e.g., delay-sensitive, PTT, etc.) and/or a size of a call message to be sent by the UE for requesting initiation of the communication session by the application server. The UE selects a reverse-link channel on which to transmit the call message based at least in part upon the determined type of the communication session and/or the determined size of the call message. The UE transitions to a given state (e.g., CELL_FACH, CELL_DCH, etc.) that supports transmissions upon the selected reverse-link channel. The UE transmits the call message on the selected reverse-link channel after the UE is transitioned to the given state.

  • Publication number: 20140254413
Abstract: An access network (AN) receives a call announcement message for transmission to an access terminal (AT). The AN initiates, in response to the received call announcement message, a physical-layer synchronization procedure for at least one channel between the AN and the AT, the physical-layer synchronization procedure associated with a transition of the access terminal to a dedicated channel state. The AN performs the initiation by sending a message to the AT. In response to the message, the AT monitors a downlink channel for receipt of the call announcement message. The AN then transmits the call announcement message on the downlink channel to the access terminal, and the AT receives the call announcement message due to the monitoring. The call announcement message is transmitted either (i) before the physical layer synchronization procedure completes or (ii) before a transmission of a reconfiguration complete message indicating completion of dedicated channel state transition.

  • Patent number: 8711772
Abstract: A user equipment (UE) determine to activate a data session. The UE configures a data session activation request message to include an indication of an association with communication sessions of a given type (e.g., delay-sensitive communication sessions), and then transmits the data session activation request message to an access network. The access network determines to establish an aggressive paging cycle of a downlink channel for the UE based in part upon receiving a message (e.g., which can be different than the data session activation request message) that conveys the indication of the association to the access network. The access network sends at least one instruction for facilitating an allocation of the aggressive paging cycle to the UE, and the UE receives the at least one instructions and monitors the downlink channel accordingly.

  • Patent number: 8707391
Abstract: In an embodiment, a proxy client is positioned within a local wireless network (e.g., a Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN)) and maintains a connection to an application server in a Wireless Wide Area Network (WWAN) that is separate from the local wireless network. The application server arbitrates group communication sessions between a plurality of user equipments (UEs). An Internet Protocol (IP) unicast connection is established between the proxy client and the application server. The proxy client associates with at least one of the UEs over the local wireless network, and notifies the application server of the association. The application server sends, to the proxy client, traffic associated with a group communication session to the associated UE(s). The proxy client re-transmits the received traffic via IP multicast over the wireless network.

  • Patent number: 8611898
Abstract: An access terminal selects less than all of a plurality of flows associated with a given multicast session, and sends a call registration message including reference to the selected less than all flows to an access network to request registration to each of the plurality of flows. The access network receives the call registration message, and interprets the call registration message as requesting registration to each of the plurality of flows associated with the given multicast session. The access network transmits a scheduling message to a group of access terminals that advertises less than all of a plurality of flows associated with the given multicast session. Access terminals in the group that receive the scheduling message interpret the scheduling message as if each of the plurality of flows is advertised as carried upon a downlink channel.
