  • Patent number: 7113366
Abstract: A thin film electromagnetic head has an inductive transducer with a double-nosed ferromagnetic trailing pole layer. The trailing pole layer has a trailing pole tip disposed adjacent to a media-facing surface, a trailing pole yoke disposed distal to the media-facing surface, and a trailing pole nose disposed between the trailing pole tip and the trailing pole yoke. The media-facing surface extends as a substantially flat surface in all directions from the trailing pole tip. The length of the trailing pole nose may be at least twice as long as the trailing pole tip length. The width of the trailing pole nose can be 10 to 30 times as wide as the trailing pole tip width. An inductive transducer having a double-nosed trailing pole layer provides a higher ratio of on-track to off-track write fields, thereby improving the density with which data can be written to the recording media. Such a double-nosed trailing pole layer can be used in transducers for either longitudinal or perpendicular magnetic recording.

  • Patent number: 7063753
Abstract: Present invention provides enabling techniques of integrating novel nanotube elements into semiconductor devices, particularly in transistors, as gate channels or/and as interconnects. This is done in a series of process steps, which consist of fabricating magnetic-core-containing nanotubes of selected size (diameter and length), filtration of nanotube powders, preparing nanotube precursor in aqueous chemicals to form colloidal solutions of proper concentration, dispersing nanotube-containing solutions onto wafer surface, and finally positioning nanotubes at desired locations by magnetic means to complete nanotube device structure. The key to this invention is to provide miniature nanotubes with tangible physical properties, in this case, magnetic properties, so that they can be aligned, filtered, and precisely directed to desired locations for device application. Such processes enable nanotubes to be compatible with typical semiconductor wafer processing technologies.

  • Patent number: 7007372
Abstract: An inductive write element is disclosed for use in a magnetic data recording system. The write element provides increased data rate and data density capabilities through improved magnetic flux flow through the element. The write element includes a magnetic yoke constructed of first and second magnetic poles. The first pole includes a pedestal constructed of a high magnetic moment (high Bsat) material, which is preferably FeRhN nanocrystalline films with lamination layers of CoZrCr. The second pole includes a thin inner layer of high Bsat material (also preferably FeRhN nanocrystalline films with lamination layers of CoZrCr), the remainder being constructed of a magnetic material capable of being electroplated, such as a Ni—Fe alloy. An electrically conductive coil passes through the yoke between the first and second poles to induce a magnetic flux in the yoke when an electrical current is caused to flow through the coil.

  • Patent number: 6906894
Abstract: A read/write head and method of making the same are used in a data storage system, such as a disk drive, for perpendicular magnetic recording of data. The head employs a two-layer pole design with a main pole made of sputtered high moment magnetic material, and an adjunct pole made of electroplated soft magnetic film. The main pole is used to write data onto the medium, and is formed over the write coil. The adjunct pole is substantially recessed from the air bearing surface and is formed over the main pole. The present head design significantly enhances the magnetic write field, and substantially reduces side-writing that result in accidental erasure of data in adjacent tracks on the magnetic recording medium.

  • Patent number: 6873494
Abstract: An inductive write head structure incorporating a high moment film in conjunction with at least one pole (e.g., the bottom pole) for use with magnetic storage media and a process for producing the same in which a lift-off photoresist mask is used prior to the deposition of the high moment sputtered film. Following the lift-off process, the high moment film remains on the bottom pole (“P1”) pedestal (in the case of a PDZT type write head) or on the P1 itself (in the case of a Stitched Pole write head). The edge of the lift-off sputtered film is then covered by cured photoresist insulation which is placed at a distance away from the air bearing surface (“ABS”). The coverage of insulation at the edge of the sputtered film is desirable in order to avoid forming a topographic step which may have undesired consequences in the subsequent top pole formation processes.

  • Patent number: 6801408
Abstract: In at least one embodiment, the apparatus of the invention is a read sensor which includes a shield, a sensor element, a read gap positioned between the shield and the sensor element, and an extra gap positioned between the shield and the sensor element and adjacent the read gap. The sensor element is positioned in a sensor layer. With the sensor element and the shield separated by only the relatively thin gap layer, high sensitivity of the sensor element is obtained. Further, by placing the relatively thick extra gap between the shield and the sensor layer and about the sensor element, the potential for shorting is minimized. The shield can be planarized to keep the read gap and the sensor layer at, and about, the sensor element substantially planar. This, in turn, results in improved control of sensor track widths and greatly reduces the potential for pooling of photoresist.
