    Abstract: A translating apparatus includes: a prefix table for storing a prefix and a plurality of translated words of the prefix such that the translated words of the prefix are, respectively, composed of different kinds of characters of a target language. There is in the apparatus a prefix decision device for deciding whether or not one of morphemes obtained by a morphological analysis portion is a basic word combined with the prefix. The apparatus also has a character discriminating device for discriminating, in the case where it has been decided by the prefix decision device that the one of the morphemes obtained by the morphological analysis portion is the basic word combined with the prefix, a kind of characters of a translated word of the basic word.

    Abstract: A translation apparatus is capable of translating a sentence from an original language into a sentence of a target language. In the translation apparatus, the sentence from the original language is analyzed by a computer so that the sentence of the target language may be produced. Prior to the translation, if the sentence from the original language contain a word or words which have not been registered in dictionaries for translation, such words can be collectively indicated on a screen or outputted by a printer. During the translation, if the sentence of the target language contain an inappropriate word or words, each of these words can be replaced by another desired word.

    Abstract: A machine translation apparatus includes a morpheme analyzer having a dictionary for analyzing a source sentence into morphemes and for obtaining part of speech and other information using the dictionary, a syntax analyzer having grammatical rules for analyzing the structure of the morphemes identified by the morpheme analyzer using the dictionary and grammatical rules, a convertor for converting the structure obtained by the syntax analyzer to a structure of the target language, and a translated sentence generator for generating a translated sentence according to the structure of the target language obtained by the convertor. The translation apparatus further includes a marker entry for entering a no-conversion start marker and a no-conversion end marker in the input sentence, so that during the generation of the target language, the words between the no-conversion start and end markers are developed without being translated.

After a predetermined time, character data is read out from the first storage unit and transferred to a second storage unit. A discriminating device determines whether the character data read out of the first storage unit is a period, and whether a space follows the period. In the event a period and space are detected, the sentence associated with the period is translated.

These insertion marks can be quotation marks, colons, semicolons or parentheses found in the original language sentence. The computer also post-treats the insertion marks to provide an appropriate translation of the insertion marks into the target language sentence. These translations of the insertion marks are carried out without carrying the insertion marks throughout the whole translation process.

    Abstract: A machine translation apparatus is disclosed which includes a number discriminator which distinguishes whether or not the first morpheme to appear in the sentence separated by a morpheme analyzer is a number, and a memory control which, when the number discriminator identifies the morpheme at the beginning to be a number, stores data which identifies the number as a sentence beginning adverb so that the number is added to the beginning of the translated sentence converted to the target language, thus enabling the distinguishable translation between the ordinary sentence and the itemized sentence which begin with a number. The machine translation apparatus further includes a heading specifying step which specifies the words stored in a buffer to be a heading if a word continuing after the word stored in the buffer is a last word and is other than a period, a question mark and an exclamation mark, thus enabling the distinguishable translation between the ordinary sentence and the heading.
