The recording medium includes at least one recording layer, and a data area on the recording layer. The data area includes at least one spare area and a user data area. The spare area contains at least one replacement cluster, each of the replacement clusters storing therein address information of a corresponding defective cluster.

Abstract: The data structure on the recording medium includes a temporary defect management area storing a data block. The data block includes a temporary definition structure. The temporary definition structure indicates a recording mode of the recording medium.

Abstract: A recording medium and an apparatus for recording/reproducing data on the recording medium, which are capable of controlling access to the recording medium by recording control information for controlling access for reading the data, are disclosed. When a function included in the recording medium cannot be performed, Unknown Rules are applied, and, when the function included in the recording medium can be performed, Known Rules are applied. Even in the Known Rules, a password may be used such that data reading is controlled. Accordingly, it is possible to compatibly reproduce the data from different versions of recording media. It is difficult for a user to access to the recording medium such that content protection can be improved.

Abstract: A method for overwriting data in a recording medium includes the steps of assigning a plurality of record areas to the recording medium, and recording the same category data in individual record areas; and performing a replacement record operation at a specific position indicative of a closest writable area, upon receiving an overwrite command, and maintaining the same category data in the record area after performing the replacement record operation. The method for overwriting data in a recording medium includes the steps of assigning at least one Sequential Recording Range (SRR) to the recording medium, and recording data in the assigned SRR; b) upon receiving an overwrite command associated with a pre-recorded area contained in the SRR, performing a replacement record operation in a writable area contained in the SRR; and c) if the writable area is not present in the SRR, performing a replacement record operation in a writable area contained in an adjacent SRR.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for managing a defective area of a recording medium, are discussed. According to an embodiment, the method includes identifying a finalization state by searching identification information indicating whether or not the recording medium is finalized; searching a location of defect list information recorded in a management area when identification information indicating the recording medium is finalized; and searching a location of latest temporary defect list information recorded in a temporary management area when identification information indicating the recording medium is not finalized.

According to an embodiment, there is provided an apparatus for assigning a spare area in a storage medium assignable at least one spare area, characterized by assigning a spare area within or to a predetermined maximum allowable size, the spare area being assignable to a first size smaller than the predetermined maximum allowable size, or assignable to a second size same as the predetermined maximum allowable size, wherein the spare area is assignable during a formatting process of the storage medium, or in-use status different than the formatting process of the storage medium, and the spare area is located at an outer radius of the storage medium.

Abstract: A method for recording or reproducing data to/from an optical recording medium, through an interface from the optical recording/reading device to a host device, includes receiving a real time write command from the host device if real time data is generated; determining the presence of a defective block listed on a Defect List of a Defect Management Area in a writing area designated by the write command prior to writing the data; returning position information of a defective block to the host device if a defective block is present; and receiving a new write command from the host device to write the data on the optical recording medium based on the returned position information of the defective block.

Abstract: In an embodiment of the method of recording data on a recording medium, a next recordable position of a recording range is notified to a host. A replacement for data requested to be recorded is performed at a first area of the recording range by recording sequentially the data requested onto a second area starting from the next recordable position instead of the first area. The first area has recorded data and the second area does not have recorded data. A management information entry is recorded onto a temporary defect management area of the recording medium. The management information entry indicates the first and second areas and includes first and second status indicators indicating a status of the management information entry. Abstract: Disclosed is a write-once optical disc and method for managing a spare area thereof, the write-once optical disc possibly having a temporary defect management area within one or more spare areas. The method includes the steps of: allocating one or more spare areas including the temporary defect management area at an initial status of the optical disc; and during use of the optical disc, expanding the spare area allocated including the temporary defect management area to set a new spare area. By employing the above optical disc and method, it becomes possible to establish unified regulations on the structures of the spare area and temporary defect management area applicable to the write-once optical disc, so that usage efficiency of the optical disc can be improved.

Abstract: A recording medium, and a method and apparatus of controlling an access to the recording medium are disclosed. Physical access control (PAC) information that is pre-recorded on a recording medium is extracted. Then, a PAC identification is extracted from the PAC information. An access to the recording medium is controlled using first control information that is included in the PAC information, when the PAC identification is known. Alternatively, the access to the recording medium is controlled using second control information that is included in the PAC information, when the PAC identification is unknown.
