Even in the Known Rules, a password may be used such that data reading is controlled. Accordingly, it is possible to compatibly reproduce the data from different versions of recording media. The method for overwriting data in a recording medium includes the steps of assigning at least one Sequential Recording Range (SRR) to the recording medium, and recording data in the assigned SRR; b) upon receiving an overwrite command associated with a pre-recorded area contained in the SRR, performing a replacement record operation in a writable area contained in the SRR; and c) if the writable area is not present in the SRR, performing a replacement record operation in a writable area contained in an adjacent SRR.
