Patent number: 5645520Abstract: A construction element that contains a shape memory element which changes shape in response to a change in the temperature of the memory element. The temperature is varied by a fluid which flows through channels adjacent to the shape memory element. The fluid typically flows through an inner channel of the memory element and an outer element formed by the element and an outer elastic pipe. A plurality of shape memory elements can be coupled together to create a robotic arm or an endoscopic instrument. The arm or endoscope can change shape by varying the temperature of the fluid. The fluid temperature and the corresponding shape of the arm/endoscope can be controlled by a computer.Type: GrantFiled: October 12, 1994Date of Patent: July 8, 1997Assignee: Computer Motion, Inc.Inventors: Yoshihiko Nakamura, Minoru Hashimoto

Patent number: 5585147Abstract: A surface treatment of a glass fabric used for a fiber reinforced composite such as multilayer circuit boards comprises the steps of exposing the glass fabric to an atmospheric pressure plasma of a mixture gas to obtain a plasma-treated surface of the glass fabric, and coating an organosilane compound on the plasma-treated surface. The mixture gas contains as a reaction gas at least one of an oxidative gas and a fluorine-containing gas, and a rare gas as a carrier of the reaction gas. The mixture gas is pre-heated prior to the plasma excitation thereof. When the glass fabric includes an organic compound as a sizing agent, the organic compound can be efficiently removed from the glass fabric by the exposing step. For example, the organosilane compound can be coated on the plasma-treated surface by exposing the plasma-treated surface to a second atmospheric pressure plasma of a second mixture gas containing an organosilane monomer.Type: GrantFiled: May 22, 1995Date of Patent: December 17, 1996Assignee: Matsushita Electric Works, Ltd.Inventors: Satoru Ogawa, Yasushi Sawada, Masahiro Matsumura, Yoshihiko Nakamura

Patent number: 5071760Abstract: The instant invention relates to a method for culturing and floating animal cells in a double-bag container, where an outer bag containing culture media and a volume of air houses an inner bag of a semipermeable film containing cells suspended in a culture media. The semipermeable film has pores of sufficient size so as to prohibit cells within the inner bag from passing therethrough but allowing culture liquid and air to pass through it. To optimize the exchange of nutrients between the interiors of the two bags, a protective mesh surrounds the inner bag and the double-bag container is fastened to an agitator which provides either a rotating or shaking motion.Type: GrantFiled: February 14, 1991Date of Patent: December 10, 1991Assignee: Kawasumi Laboratories Inc.Inventors: Katsuto Watanabe, Yoshihiko Nakamura, Takashi Noto, Masaichi Yamamura, Hitoshi Nakashima, Kazunori Ichinohe, Yukitaka Mino, Kazuhiro Nishijima

Patent number: 4868638Abstract: An improved plastic molded chip carrier package for a semiconductor chip has a plurality of I/O pins arranged on a pin grid array. The pin grid array comprises at least two rows of the I/O pins disposed along the sides of the chip in such a manner that the I/O pins are staggered with respect to those in the other row. The staggered arrangement of the I/O pins makes it easy to provide electrical interconnection between the I/O ports on the chip and the corresponding I/O pins without requiring an elaborate or crowded wiring or connection lines. This is particularly effective when an increased number of the I/O pins are required to be included in the limited area of the chip carrier.Type: GrantFiled: November 13, 1987Date of Patent: September 19, 1989Assignee: Matsushita Electric Works, Ltd.Inventors: Atsuomi Hirata, Yoshihiko Nakamura, Kensaku Morii

Patent number: 3956611Abstract: A high pressure radiant energy image furnace includes a radiant heat source, such as a Xenon short arc lamp or a halogen incandescent lamp, and an optical system for concentrating the radiant energy from the source on a sample enclosed in a thin wall transparent sample vessel. A closed high pressure vessel resistant to more than 10 atmospheres encloses the heat source as well as the optical system, sample and the sample vessel. A first high pressure gas source communicates with the high pressure vessel and a second high pressure gas source communicates with the sample vessel. The sample in the sample vessel is subjected to a gas pressure of more than 10 atmospheres and the gas pressures in the high pressure vessel and the sample vessel are substantially the same whereby pressure stresses the sample vessel created by differences in internal and external gas pressure are eliminated and the sample safety heated.Type: GrantFiled: December 17, 1973Date of Patent: May 11, 1976Assignee: Ushio Electric Inc.Inventor: Yoshihiko Nakamura
