  • Patent number: 5353907
Abstract: A dual-purpose escalator for a wheelchair including a plurality of steps linked in an endless form and a main-frame having a running path for the steps. The steps include a plurality of specialized steps for loading a wheelchair. The escalator further includes an activating apparatus provided on the running path for causing the specialized steps to alter a configuration thereof to a first state for a wheelchair loading operation mode or to restore the configuration to a second state for normal operation mode. Each of the specialized steps includes a toothed rotor. The activating apparatus includes an engagement member for engaging with the toothed rotor. Each of the toothed rotors is rotated by engaging with the engagement member for causing one of the specialized steps to alter the configuration to the first state when the steps are running in the running path in the wheelchair loading operation mode, respectively.

  • Patent number: 5332077
Abstract: An escalator apparatus is comprised of a first specialized step, having a moveable tread which can rise and fall, and a second specialized step, which is adjacent to and above it and has a lift mechanism which can appear and disappear to support the moveable tread of the first specialized step. Both specialized steps are incorporated in a section of multiple steps which are arranged to run in an endless loop. When loading a wheeled conveyance, the lift mechanism projects and operates at a level section of an outward path, and runs on an inclined section while supporting the moveable tread at the same height as the second specialized step to guarantee an effective tread depth dimension for loading the wheeled conveyance. Furthermore, the construction provides guide means which tilts the moveable tread forward while it is being caused to rise to the same height as the second specialized step. Accordingly in the escalator apparatus, loading space for the wheeled conveyance can be easily guaranteed.

  • Patent number: 5330042
Abstract: An escalator is arranged such that a first special step having a movable footplate capable of rising and falling is combined with a second special step adjacent to the upstream side of the first special step and having a projectable and retractable lift mechanism. The projectable and retractable lift mechanism supports the movable footplate of the first special step in part of a plurality of running steps provided endlessly in a line. When mounting a wheelchair, the movable footplate runs along the inclined path area with the movable footplate supported at the same height as the second special step by operating the lift mechanism in the horizontal path area of the travel path. The movable footplate ensures a rearward footplate dimension sufficient to carry the wheelchair.
