  • Publication number: 20050007977
Abstract: A method and apparatus for transmitting broadcast information in a multi-carrier communication system. The Sync Channel of the multi-carrier system is transmitted a 1.25 MHz channel bandwidth (i.e., over a single carrier), and to specify the preferred channels for the Sync Channel transmission instead of the preferred channels for the entire multi-carrier system. The Sync Channel Message will carry additional information indicating the center frequency of a multi-carrier system within a reserved set of frequency bands and indicating the frequency of a single carrier system in the reserved set of frequency bands. Considering the A block of the PCS band again, the preferred channels for Sync Channel transmission can be selected as channels 75, 150 and 225. This selection ensures that one of the preferred channels will always be used by any multi-carrier system regardless of the location of its center channel.

  • Patent number: 6842477
Abstract: A novel and improved method for implementing a high-transmission-rate over-the-air interface is described. A transmit system provides an in-phase channel set and a quadrature-phase channel set. The in-phase channel set is used to provide a complete set of orthogonal medium rate control and traffic channels. The quadrature-phase channel set is used to provide a high-rate supplemental channel and an extended set of medium rate channels that are orthogonal to each other and the original medium rate channels. The high-rate supplemental channel is generated over a set of medium rate channels using a short channel code. The medium rate channel is generated using a set of long channel codes.

  • Publication number: 20040224707
Abstract: A system for accessing broadcast SMS messages over a wireless communication system. A base station transmits SMS messages periodically and aperiodically over a broadcast channel. The base station allocates periodic slots in the broadcast channel for each of the subscriber services providing the SMS messages and transmits slot parameters to mobile units. Using the slot parameter information, the mobile units periodically wake up to scan the broadcast channel. The period for each category of broadcast SMS messages may be different and the period may apply to a single broadcast channel. Messages arriving aperiodically can be queued and transmitted in pre-scheduled broadcast channel frames. Messages with inter-arrival interval greater than the specified transmission period are simply repeated.

  • Publication number: 20040162099
Abstract: Systems and methods for controlling the power level for a mobile station during periods when no data is being transmitted by the mobile station. In one embodiment, data is intermittently transmitted from a mobile station to a base station on a reverse-link traffic channel. When data is being transmitted on the traffic channel, the transmitted data is used by the base station to perform power control operations (e.g., incrementing or decrementing the mobile station's power level, based upon comparison of a received SNR to a target SNR). When no data is being transmitted on the traffic channel, a “zero-rate indicator” is transmitted on the rate indicator channel. The zero-rate indicator is used by the base station to perform power control. Power control based on the zero-rate indicator may use velocity profiles, reliability metrics or other techniques to control adjustment of the power level.

  • Patent number: 6728538
Abstract: A method and apparatus for generating an autonomous Pilot Strength Measurement Message (PSMM) by a mobile station traveling in a multi-carrier wireless communication system. In a multi-carrier system, the mobile station receives the pilot channel of a base station on multiple carrier frequencies simultaneously. Fading may vary from carrier frequency to carrier frequency. New pilot strength definitions are used by the mobile station in a set of rules transmitted by the base station. The set of rules determines autonomous generation and transmission of PSMMs by the mobile station upon detection of pilots.

  • Patent number: 6687285
Abstract: A mobile station operating in the slotted mode, while monitoring the Quick Paging Channel, monitors the Paging Channel in its assigned slot at least once every N minutes, regardless of what the Quick Paging Channel indicates for that slot. The mobile station shall keep a counter for the number of false alarms that have occurred and another counter for the number misses that have occurred. The count of accumulated false alarms (QPCH_FA) and the count of accumulated misses (QPCH_MISS) are stored by the mobile station and will be sent to the base station when so requested. These two counters can be reset at powering-up or by the base station via messaging, or both. When the number of accumulated misses in a given time interval T1 exceeds a certain threshold Nm1, the mobile station may send a message to inform the base station of this.

  • Patent number: 6680727
Abstract: Techniques for canceling pilot interference in a wireless (e.g., CDMA) communication system. A received signal typically includes a number of signal instances (i.e., multipaths). For each multipath desired to be processed, the other multipaths act as interference on the desired multipath. If the pilot is generated based on a known data pattern (e.g., all zeros) and covered with a known channelization code (e.g., a Walsh code of zero), then the pilot in an interfering multipath may be estimated as the spreading sequence at a time offset corresponding to the arrival time of that multipath. The pilot interference from each interference multipath may be estimated based on the spreading sequence for the interfering multipath and the despreading sequence for the desired multipath. The total pilot interference from a number of interfering multipaths may be subtracted from the data component in the desired multipath to provide pilot-canceled data having improved performance.

  • Publication number: 20030235210
Abstract: Access to a variable rate multiple access system is controlled based upon a current loading. The current loading level is used to determine a transmission rate set point. The transmission rate set point may include a maximum transmission rate and a transmission probability. The transmission rate set point is passed to the remote unit which may access the system. A remote unit with data to send determines a desired transmission data rate. If the desire transmission data rate is equal to or greater than the maximum transmission data rate, the remote unit transmits at the maximum transmission data rate with a probability equal to the transmission probability.

  • Publication number: 20030161471
Abstract: A control channel in a communication system transmits messages in a one or multiple-slot format. To assure consistency of a message, a content quality indicator is included in the message. Because a terminal receiving the message does not know the number of slots comprising the message, the terminal performs blind format determination by testing hypothesis for all slot formats. Unfortunately, the content of certain control messages results in control messages that appear to be valid in a sense that, the computed CRC is equal to the interpreted CRC. Consequently, the mobile station declares a valid control message, and a false-alarm event occurs. Moreover, the same control messages always result in the same false-alarm events. To prevent such repetitive incorrect determination, the content of the message is scrambled by a time-dependent scrambling sequence before transmission. Re-generating the scrambling sequence, and performing inverse to the scrambling then unscrambles the received message.
