    Abstract: A channel memory length selection method for wireless communication systems is provided. The method comprises estimating an initial channel impulse response (CIR) for the wireless communication system; determining a first refined CIR with a first group of taps and a second refined CIR with a second group of taps based upon the initial CIR, number of the second group of taps being less than number of the first group of taps; and selecting either the number of the first group of taps or the number of the second group of taps as the channel memory length according to an energy concentration criterion in regard to the first refined CIR and the second refined CIR.

    Abstract: A bit error probability (BEP) estimation method includes de-shaping a coded block to obtain a channel hard output block comprising a header hard output and at least one data hard output, de-puncturing and decoding the header hard output to obtain a decoded header part, determining whether the decoded header part has errors, selecting the decoded header part or a decoded whole block as a selected part based on the determination result, wherein the decoded whole block comprises the decoded header part and a decoded data part obtained by de-puncturing and decoding the data hard output, re-encoding the selected part to obtain a re-encoded decision, and comparing the re-encoded decision to the header hard output or the channel hard output corresponding to the selected part to obtain the BEP of the coded block. A receiver employing the BEP estimation method is also provided in the invention.

    Abstract: A composite thermal barrier coating system includes a first composite thermal barrier coating over a portion of a substrate, and a second deposited thermal barrier coating over edge portions of the substrate. The first composite coating is relatively thick and preferably includes friable graded insulation comprising an abradable honeycomb metallic structure filled with high thermal expansion ceramic hollow spheres in a phosphate bonded matrix. The second deposited edge coating is relatively thin and preferably comprises an electron beam physical vapor deposited thermal barrier coating comprising ZrO2 and Y2O3. The friable graded insulation may be manufactured to thicknesses in excess of current thermal barrier coating systems, thereby imparting greater thermal protection. Superior erosion resistance and abrasion properties are also achieved. The composite thermal barrier coating system is useful on combustion turbine components such as ring seal segments, vane segment shrouds, transitions and combustors.
