  • Patent number: 6754765
Abstract: A flash memory controller with a volatile program and data memory is disclosed. The controller loads microcode and data into the program and data memory from a flash memory array upon powerup of the controller. If an error occurs during the download or the microcode does not exist in the flash memory array, then the controller loads microcode and data into the program and data memory from the host computer. In some embodiments of the invention, an initial code is downloaded to the controller so that an evaluation of the configuration of the controller and the flash memory can be communicated to a host computer. The host computer then downloads for storage into the flash memory a tailored microcode and restarts the controller so that the tailored microcode is loaded from the flash memory and executed. In some embodiments, a protection circuit is provided to protect the microcode from accidentally being erased from the flash memory.

  • Publication number: 20040099340
Abstract: Methods of providing improved metal coatings or metal deposits on a substrate, improvements in plating solutions that are used to provide such metal deposits and articles of the metal-coated substrates. The solderability of the metal coating is enhanced by incorporating trace amounts of phosphorus in the metal coating to reduce surface oxide formation during subsequent heating and thus enhance long term solderability of the metal coating. The phosphorus is advantageously provided in the metal coating by incorporating a source of phosphorus in a solution that is used to provide the metal coating on the substrate, and the metal coating is then provided on the substrate from the solution.

  • Publication number: 20040063470
Abstract: A method and apparatus for rapid dialing of a mobile terminal. A database is set in a memory unit of the mobile terminal, including mobile service provider data and at least one corresponding Internet phone prefix code. A mobile service provider is selected from the database to obtain the corresponding Internet phone prefix code. • Publication number: 20040012925
Abstract: The invention relates to heat transfer apparatus for cooling electronic components. There is a continuously increasing demand for compact electronic systems such as portable laptop computers and thirst for high processing power, leading to high heat generated by components residing within these systems. These electronic systems have to be cooled due to their fixed operating temperature ranges. Operating an electronic component beyond its rated operating temperature range will damage electronic components. Instead of conventionally utilising a bigger fan, a smaller sized solution is required for cooling an electronic component contained in a compact electronic system, for example a notebook computer. A heat transfer apparatus includes a heat carrier for conveying heat away from the electronic system into a radiator for dissipation. The radiator is placed into a cooler for directing air through the radiator and expelling heated air, cooling the radiator in the process.

  • Publication number: 20030224830
Abstract: A mobile telephone capable of displaying an image of a caller automatically. The mobile telephone includes an input device, a storage media, a caller register, a query device and a display device. While receiving a call, the mobile telephone displays an image of a caller. The invention also provides a method for automatically displaying an image of a caller in a mobile telephone. After receiving an incoming telephone number, the mobile telephone seeks the incoming telephone number in a predetermined look-up table that comprises telephone numbers and images corresponding to the incoming telephone numbers. Lastly, when finding the incoming telephone number in the look-up table, the image corresponding to the incoming telephone number is displayed on the display device of the mobile telephone.

  • Patent number: 6590962
Abstract: A method and apparatus to non-interactively test telephone networks and more specifically to localize faults such as resistive faults in the subscriber loop of the telephone network is presented. The method and apparatus determine whether the fault is in the tip line or ring line of a phone line. The existence of a fault voltage, if any, is also determined. The resistance of the tip line to ground and the resistance of the ring line to ground is measured. A fault resistance is calculated from this information, from which the location of the fault is determined.

  • Publication number: 20030112743
Abstract: Timing in a receiver is synchronized to an orthogonal frequency division multiplex (OFDM) signal transmitted over a channel. The OFDM signal includes multiple training symbols, including long and short training symbols. The first half of the training symbols are correlated with the second half to determine a coarse index which is used to adjust the unsynchronized OFDM. In the coursely adjusted OFDM signal, the first training symbol is then correlated with the last traininig symbol to determine a fine index to adjust the coarsely adjusted OFDM signal so that the receiver is synchronized with the transmitted OFDM signal.

  • Publication number: 20030025182
Abstract: In accordance with a first aspect of the invention, a metal substrate is provided with a layer of tin or tin alloy that is coated under tensile stress to inhibit the growth of tin whiskers. The tensile stressed tin and tin alloy is preferably coated with a grain size larger than 1 micrometer. Advantageously the tin or tin alloy is coated on an underlayer chosen to maintain or generate the tensile stress state in the tin coating. The tensile stress inhibits whisker growth, and the resulting structure is particularly useful as a part of an electrical connector or lead frame. In a second aspect of the invention, the tensile stress of tin coatings is monitored to provide coatings of reduced tendency toward whisker growth.

  • Patent number: 6385297
Abstract: A method and automatic test system for determining qualification of a twisted pair transmission line to propagate data signals. The method includes measuring phase imbalance in the twisted pair transmission line. The phase imbalance is determined by resistance imbalance in the twisted pair transmission line. The resistance imbalance is determined by applying a common mode voltage to the twisted pair transmission line; and, determining phase imbalance in the twisted pair in response to the applied common mode voltage. The method includes applying a common mode voltage to the twisted pair transmission line; determining phase imbalance if the twisted pair in response to the applied common mode voltage; detecting a peak in the determined phase imbalance; determining a frequency of the detected peak; determining line qualification in accordance with the determined frequency.
