  • Publication number: 20150111196
Abstract: A microfluidic chip orients and isolates components in a sample fluid mixture by two-step focusing, where sheath fluids compress the sample fluid mixture in a sample input channel in one direction, such that the sample fluid mixture becomes a narrower stream bounded by the sheath fluids, and by having the sheath fluids compress the sample fluid mixture in a second direction further downstream, such that the components are compressed and oriented in a selected direction to pass through an interrogation chamber in single file formation for identification and separation by various methods. The isolation mechanism utilizes external, stacked piezoelectric actuator assemblies disposed on a microfluidic chip holder, or piezoelectric actuator assemblies on-chip, so that the actuator assemblies are triggered by an electronic signal to actuate jet chambers on either side of the sample input channel, to jet selected components in the sample input channel into one of the output channels.

  • Patent number: 8232270
Abstract: The present invention belongs to pharmaceutical field. It relates to a novel family of bivalent (?)-meptazinol compounds and/or their salts, as well as the preparation and utilization of the compounds in the treatment of neurodegenerative disorders and dementias such as Alzheimer's Disease (AD). In the present invention, bivalent (?)-meptazinol compounds were synthesized, from the starting material (?)-meptazinol, successively by N-demethylation forming (?)-nor-meptazinol and then by acylation with ?,?-alkanediacyl dihalides or alkylation with ?,?-dihaloalkanes. Results from in vitro cholinesterase inhibiting test and AChE-induced A? aggregation test demonstrated that the bivalent (?)-meptazinol compounds and/or their salts were novel bivalent inhibitors of both AChE and A? aggregation. The most potent compound inhibited both AChE and BChE at nM level, which was 10000 and 1500 times more potent than (?)-MEP hydrochloride, respectively.

  • Publication number: 20110177547
Abstract: A fluidic device includes an arrangement of channels for introducing a sample containing particles of interest into a processing chamber. The chamber is in fluid communication with collecting channels via low-flow connection channels. Particles in the sample may be observed and diverted from the processing chamber by application of a motive force such as optical trapping into a collection channel. Once in the collection channel, particles can be collected, including by trapping in a porous matrix.

  • Publication number: 20100104518
Abstract: A method for producing a chewing gum with a controlled release traditional Chinese medicine active agent, as well as the chewing gum so produced, is obtained by physically modifying the release properties of the traditional Chinese medicine active agent by coating and drying. The traditional Chinese medicine active agent is coated by encapsulation, partially coated by agglomeration, entrapped by absorption, or treated by multiple steps of encapsulation, agglomeration, and absorption. The coated traditional Chinese medicine active agent is preferably then co-dried and particle sized to produce a release-modified traditional Chinese medicine active agent for use in chewing gum. The traditional Chinese medicine active agent may also be used in a coating on a chewing gum product, as part of a rolling compound applied to the chewing gum product, or as a part of the liquid in a liquid-center chewing gum product.
