Rear facing baby safety seat

We have invented a rear facing baby safety seat for use in automobiles that includes a reinforced steel and plastic head protector assembly to decrease the likelihood of injury to the child in the event of an accident. That a head protector, like a “helmet” be reinforced by steel and be a part of the baby seat and that neither one be used separately. That the baby seat and head protector, be joined together by a one half inch square solid steel bar, fastened permanently on the head protector, that slides up and down inside a square steel frame fastened permanently to the baby seat, with adjustment holes and steel pins to adjust for the proper height and width of the baby's head and body.

Description

[0001] REAR FACING BABY SAFETY SEAT, with adjustable steel slide in rear of the baby seat that goes up and over the top of the head protector “baby helmet” All of which will be reinforced by steel on both baby seat and the head protector, then will be concealed by a durable plastic.

[0002] The adjustable steel slide shall be to adjust for the heighth of the baby, from baby;s seat to the top of the baby's head, with holes to keep it at the proper heighth, with steel fastner pins. With the front of the helmet coming down in front to about one-fourth of an inch above the baby's eyes and on the sides one inch below the baby's ears.

[0003] The helmet shell would be lined, the complete interior with a styrofoam sponge material, with additional replaceable soft material, adhesive of one side, to stick to the helmet linning, to adjust for the circumference of the baby's head.

[0004] The baby seat will be made of a strong durable plastic and reinforced with steel, containing the slide for the head protector in the rear of the baby seat, which will be covered with a strong durable plastic material. Then a fire proof removable cloth material, padded for comfort, shall cover the entire interior and all edges of the baby seat.

[0005] The harness shall be made of a strong material similar to harnesses for baby seats and automobile seat belts, and fastened in front to make sure the baby's shoulders and body fit firmly to the baby seat, with the front fastner far enough from the throat to prevent a chance of choking. Then slots will be made for use of safety belts already installed in most vehicles, slots on bottom of seat and also on top of arm rests on the sides of the baby seat, so either may be used, in tests the top ones tend to be the best.

[0006] The purpose of this safety product, is to prevent a babys head from going toward the rear end of the car, at a terrific rate of speed, then coming to an abrupt stop, as is the case when a baby is strapped in a regular rear facing baby seat, when an automobile is rear ended by another automobile. This almost undoubtedly causes some type of closed head-injury, resulting in brain injury of some type all the way from very minor to very severe and permanent brain injury, and even death.

[0007] An infants head is extremely heavy compared to the rest of its body, and the neck muscles are very weak.

[0008] This happened to my grandson, in a horrible rear end automobile accident, when he was only a few weeks old and now he is eleven years old. He has been slow in knowledge development, because of his brains taking such a shock, when rear ended by a fast moving automobile, he was properly fastened in a rear facing baby seat. His physical growth and appearance is almost perfect for his age, but he is very mentaly handicapped, with his speech, short term memory, can't read, write, count, add, or do any thing that requires proper brain fundamentals. It is so sad, that he must spend the rest of his life, so handecapped, and to think that a rear facing baby seat in case of a rear end accident, is almost a suicide seat.

[0009] I have enclosed a picture of the crude seat we have been using for testing, it will stop such things as this happening just strapped in a regular rear facing baby seat it will break the dummy's neck every time.

[0010] I hope and I pray this patent can be issued, so other babies will never in the future have to suffer a complete lifetime of un-neccessary mental retardation or other impairments, plus the trauma, when it can be so easily prevented.

[0011] In most ways I could not be too upset if some one or company steals or use's my idea, as long as they donated most of their profits to the National Brain Injury Asso. or the National Association for the-Mentaly Ill or any organization that does good for defensless infants, strapped in a baby seat.
