Abstract

The book bag for mounting on a chair is adapted for mounting to the backrest of a chair for students that don't have access to a desk or locker to store their books and schools supplies. The book bag has an upper section with a downward opening mounting pocket that is capable of engaging the top of a backrest of a chair and a lower section with at least two compartments opening upward for storing books and school supplies in an organized manner. Various pockets are attached to an exterior front face of the lower section for holding additional school supplies with a transparent plastic window frame secured to a pocket for inserting a photograph or picture.

Description

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

[0002] The present invention relates to a book bag, and particularly to a book bag adapted for mounting on a chair with various pockets for holding articles, such as books and school supplies.

[0003] 2. Description of the Related Art

[0004] Preschool and kindergarten schoolchildren usually require a variety of supplies during the school day. For example, the children might need paper, pencil, pens, crayons, scissors, and the like. Most children in preschool and kindergarten classes do not have desks or lockers to store their supplies. Instead, these children sit in chairs at tables, which are not equipped with a means for storing their supplies. As a result, the children's supplies become easily scrambled or knocked off the tabletops.

[0005] One remedy to this problem has been a bag that is mountable on a chair with compartments to store the children's supplies. As a result of using this chair-mountable bag, the supplies are made accessible to a child sitting in the chair. However, the chair-mountable bags known in the art suffer from several drawbacks.

[0006] Children enjoy personalizing their possessions to provide them with sentimental or aesthetic pleasure. However, the bags known in the art do not provide a means of personalizing the bags with attached photographs or pictures. Furthermore, the bags don't offer a space saving feature of displaying the photograph or picture by attaching a photograph holding means to a pocket on the bag.

[0007] In addition, the bags that are capable of storing books are not provided with an efficient organizational scheme to keep the various books within the bag organized. The bags have only one compartment for storing books and that compartment is commonly used jointly to store school supplies and other items. Without any means to separate the contents in the storage compartment, the contents become cluttered making the supplies and other items difficult to retrieve. A variety of chair-mountable bags have been proposed for storing objects.

[0008] For example, U.S. Pat. No. 6,460,925, issued Oct. 8, 2002 to Kovacs et al., describes a chair-supported bag in which a chair-mountable pocket portion of a bag includes a downwardly opening pocket for receiving the top end of the backrest of a chair. A second pocket that is connected to and depends from the first pocket opens upwardly for receiving and retrieval of articles such as pencils, erasers, crayons and the like. Similarly, U.S. Pat. No. 6,174,082, issued Jan. 16, 2001 to Pelky et al., discloses a chair-mountable bag having an inverted chair-mountable pocket for mounting over the back of a chair and a single pocket for holding school, seminar, and convention supplies.

[0009] U.S. Pat. No. 4,236,559, issued Dec. 2, 1980 to Archbold, shows a school bag having a clear plastic window covering a pocket which stores an identification card, such as bus passes and the like.

[0010] U.S. Pat. No. 6,336,555, issued Jan. 8, 2002 to Breeden, discloses a magnetic school organizer capable of magnetically attaching to a desk with a plurality of pockets for holding school supplies.

[0011] None of the above inventions and patents, taken either singly or in combination, is seen to describe the instant invention as claimed. Thus a book bag adapted for mounting on a chair solving the aforementioned problems is desired.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

[0012] The book bag of the present invention is adapted for mounting to the backrest of a chair for students that don't have access to a desk or locker to store their books and schools supplies. The book bag has an upper section with a downwardly-opening mounting pocket that is capable of engaging the top of a backrest of a chair, and a lower section with at least two compartments opening upwardly for storing books and school supplies in an organized manner. Various pockets are attached to an exterior front face of the lower section for holding additional school supplies with a transparent plastic window frame secured to a pocket for inserting a photograph or picture.

[0013] Advantageously, the compartments are better organized, allowing easier access to the contents of the compartments. Further, the transparent plastic window frame for inserting a photograph being secured to a pocket saves space on the book bag for adding other pockets for holding even more school supplies. Although the primary use of the book bag is for preschool children, anyone needing to store books or other objects may also use the book bag and mount it on a chair.

[0014] Accordingly, it is a principal object of the invention to provide a chair-mounted book bag with a transparent plastic window frame for inserting a photograph or picture secured to the exterior face of a pocket on the exterior front face of the book bag.

[0015] It is another object of the invention to provide a book bag that has an upper section and a lower section including at least two compartments capable of storing large books, and which opens upwardly for receiving and storing books and other objects.

[0016] It is a further object of the invention to provide a book bag with a mounting pocket for mounting over a chair.

[0017] Still another object of the invention is to provide a chair-mountable book bag for use in school for students required to store and have access to a plurality of objects such as books, pencils, pens, crayons, and the like.

[0018] It is another object of the invention to provide a book bag formed from one or more sheets of durable, lightweight, pliable sheet material such as nylon fabric stitched or otherwise bonded together.

[0019] It is an object of the invention to provide improved elements and arrangements thereof for the purposes described which is inexpensive, dependable and fully effective in accomplishing its intended purposes.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT

[0027] The present invention is a book bag, designated generally as 10 in the drawings. The book bag 10 is designed to mount on the backrest of a chair, as shown in FIG. 1. The book bag 10 is formed from one or more sheets of durable, lightweight, pliable sheet material, such as nylon fabric. The book bag 10 is capable of storing books, pencils, pens, crayons, and the like. Referring to FIG. 2, the book bag 10 includes a rectangular upper section 30 and a rectangular lower section 40. The lower section 40 is slightly wider than the upper section 40. The upper section 30 includes a mounting pocket, which opens downwardly, forming an inverted pocket for receiving the backrest of a chair, and a lower section 40, which contains at least two compartments, which open upwardly for receiving and storing objects therein.

[0028] A plurality of pocket structures and transparent window frames are bonded or stitched to the front exterior surface of the lower section 40. The first pocket structure 6 is shaped and dimensioned to hold a plurality of writing instruments. More specifically, the pocket structure 6 is divided into a series of longitudinal channels open at the top, each channel being configured to receive a pen or pencil. A second pocket structure 70 is an open mouth pocket for storing small objects, such as erasers or paper clips. The pocket structure 70 may be handily expanded to accommodate the items or articles, which are temporarily lodged therein. Bonded or stitched to the exterior of the pocket structure is a transparent window frame 80. The window frame 80 includes a transparent plastic window for displaying a photograph or picture. The window frame 80 is bonded or stitched on three of the four sides to the exterior of pocket structure 80. The fourth side of the window frame 80 is left open for inserting a photograph or picture. A second transparent window frame 50 is bonded or stitched to the exterior front face of the lower section 40. The transparent window frame 50 includes a transparent plastic window for displaying an identification card or an advertising card held therein. The window frame 50 is bonded or stitched to the exterior of pocket structure 80 on three sides of the four sides. The fourth side is left open for inserting the identification card or advertising card.

[0029] Referring to FIG. 3, a rear view of the book bag 10 illustrates the chair mounting side of the book bag 10. The upper section 30 is sized and shaped to fit over a backrest of a chair. The upper section 30 defines an inverted pocket that has an open end located at a lip portion 100, and a closed end that is located at the top of the book bag 10. The book bag 10 mounts on a chair when the lip portion 100 is opened to engage the top portion of a backrest of a chair.

[0030] FIG. 4 provides an illustration of the organizational scheme for book storage in the book bag 10. Compartment 110 and compartment 120 are used as the main storage area. Compartments 110 and 120 are separated by divider 90 forming the two compartments 110, 120. Both compartment 110 and compartment 120 are capable of storing large books and other objects. The separate compartments allow books and other objects to be arranged in an organized manner without the clutter and difficulty of retrieval of the contents associated with having only a single storage compartment.

[0031] FIG. 5 provides a cross sectional view of upper section 30 and lower section 40 along lines 5-5 of FIG. 2 to better illustrate the features of the book bag 10. As illustrated in FIG. 5, the upper section 30 has an inverted pocket which includes an open end at lip portion 100 and closed end at the top of the book bag 10. The upper portion extends outwardly from the rear portion of the book bag 10. The lower section 40 has a compartment 110 and a compartment 120 which are adjacent to each other for storing large books and other supplies. The compartments 110, 120 are separated by divider 90, which allows for easy access to the contents of the the compartment therein. It can be seen from FIG. 5 that a single panel of fabric forms the front of the upper section 30 and the rear of the lower section 40.

[0032] It is to be understood that the present invention is not limited to the embodiment described above, but encompasses any and all embodiments within the scope of the following claims.

Claims

1. A book bag for mounting on a backrest of a chair, comprising:

a central, elongated panel of fabric mater having a front surface and a rear surface;

a mounting pocket attached to an upper portion of the rear surface and defining an upper section, the mounting pocket opening downward for receiving the backrest of the chair; and

a lower section including a first compartment defined by a divider panel of material attached to a lower portion of the front surface of said central panel, and a second compartment defined by an exterior panel of material overlapping the divider panel, the compartments being capable of storing large objects and opening upward for receiving and storing said objects;

a plurality of pocket structures for storing objects secured to an exterior front face of the lower section; and

a transparent window frame for inserting photographs or pictures secured to one of said pocket structures on the exterior front face of said lower section.

2. The book bag according to claim 1, wherein said pocket structures and said window frames are attached to said central panel by bonding or stitching.

3. The book bag according to claim 1, wherein one of said pocket structures is divided into a series of longitudinal channels open at the top for receiving a pen or pencil.

4. The book bag according to claim 1, further comprising a transparent window for inserting an identification card attached to the exterior face of said lower section.

5. A book bag for mounting on the backrest of a chair, comprising:

an upper section including a mounting pocket, which opens downwardly for receiving the backrest of a chair; and

a lower section including at least two compartments capable of storing large books, which opens upwardly for receiving and storing said objects;

wherein a rear portion of said upper section includes a lip portion for engaging the backrest of a chair;

wherein a plurality of pocket structures for storing objects are secured to an exterior front face of said lower section;

wherein a transparent window frame for inserting objects is secured to a one of said pocket structures on the exterior front face of said lower section.

6. The book bag according to claim 5, wherein said pocket structures and said window frames are secured by bonding or stitching.

7. The book bag according to claim 5, wherein said book bag includes a dividing means for organizing objects within said compartment.

8. The book bag according to claim 5, wherein a transparent window for inserting an identification card is secured to the exterior face of said lower section.

9. The book bag according to claim 5, wherein one of said pocket structures is divided into a series of longitudinal channels open at the top to each receive a pen or pencil.

10. A book bag for mounting on the backrest of a chair, comprising:

an upper section including a mounting pocket, which opens downwardly for receiving the backrest of a chair; and

a lower section including at least two compartments capable of storing large books, which opens upwardly for receiving and storing said objects;

wherein a rear portion of said upper section includes a lip portion for engaging the backrest of a chair;

wherein a plurality of pocket structures for storing objects are secured to an exterior front face of said lower section.

11. The book bag according to claim 10, wherein said pocket structures are secured by bonding or stitching.

12. The book bag according to claim 10, wherein a transparent window frame for inserting photographs or pictures is secured to a one of said pocket structures on the exterior front face of said lower section.

13. The book bag according to claim 12, wherein said window frame is secured by bonding or stitching.

14. The book bag according to claim 10, wherein said book bag include a dividing means for organizing objects within said compartment.
