COLLAPSIBLE ADJUSTABLE POOL CHAIR
A collapsible adjustable pool chair that has a seat assembly and a back assembly. The seat assembly has a pair of supports hinged in the middle forming a scissors frame, and a flexible covering over the top of the frame forming a folding seat. The back assembly has a pair of vertical length-adjustable members and hooks for attaching to the side of a swimming pool at the top. The back assembly also has a flexible cover secured between each vertical member. The seat assembly and back assembly are connected with a hinge so that the combined assembly can fold together for storage. The height can be adjusted with the adjustable members to suit different sizes of swimmers or different purposes. The chair can also be used out of the water as a deck chair.
1. Field of the Invention
The invention is in the field of pool chairs.
2. Description of the Related Art
There are many situations in which a person would want to sit on a chair attached to the side of a pool instead of standing or swimming. For example, the person may be too young or too old to swim, not know how to swim, suffer from a disability, wants to learn a swimming technique, or wants to use the chair in recreation or sports.
Others have made pool chairs that can be attached to the side of a pool with a hook. However, the chairs that have been made before have any of a number of disadvantages. For example, they may be set at one particular depth only and not take people of different sizes into account. They may not be collapsible for storage when not in use. They cannot be used out of the water as an ordinary deck chair. What is needed, therefore, is a collapsible adjustable pool chair that can also be used as a deck chair.
SUMMARYThe present invention is an apparatus that satisfies the need for a collapsible adjustable pool chair that can also be used as a deck chair. The apparatus according to the present invention comprises a seat assembly comprising a pair of supports hinged in the middle forming a scissors frame, and a flexible covering over a top portion of the scissors frame forming a seat, the seat assembly rotatably secured near a bottom portion of the scissors frame to a back assembly; the back assembly comprising a pair of length-adjustable chair back structures each comprising a length-adjustable vertical member, and a hook at a top end of each structure for communicating with the edge of a pool, and a flexible cover secured between each chair back structure, whereby the pool chair can be assembled from a folded and collapsed position in storage, height adjusted for the intended user, and secured to a pool edge with the hooks. These and other features, aspects, and advantages of the present invention will become better understood with reference to the following description, drawing, and claims.
The pool chair according to the present invention comprises a seat assembly comprising a pair of supports hinged in the middle forming a scissors frame, and a flexible covering over a top portion of the scissors frame forming a seat, the seat assembly rotatably secured near a bottom portion of the scissors frame to a back assembly; the back assembly comprising a pair of length-adjustable chair back structures each comprising a length-adjustable vertical member, and a hook at a top end of each structure for communicating with the edge of a pool, and a flexible cover secured between each chair back structure, whereby the pool chair can be assembled from a folded and collapsed position in storage, height adjusted for the intended user, and secured to a pool edge with the hooks.
Turning to
The back assembly 300 is made of a pair of length-adjustable structures 304, 306 and hook structures 308, 310 at the top end of each length-adjustable structure. The length-adjustable structures 304, 306 can be made of a cylinder of one diameter telescoping into a cylinder of another diameter. The length can be fixed by use of any of the following:
-
- a friction fitting,
- a spring-loaded protrusion secured to an inside cylinder engaging any of a plurality of corresponding holes in an outside cylinder,
- a pin inserted through corresponding holes in the inner and outer cylinders, or
- any other length-adjusting means that are resistant to water and chlorine that is known to those having skill in the art.
The hooks 308, 310 are designed to removably secure the chair assembly 100 to the edge of a pool. A flexible cover 302 is secured between the chair back structures 304, 306 to form a backrest.
The seat assembly 200 is rotatably secured to the back assembly 300 by hinge means 250a, 250b, 250c, 250d located near a bottom portion of the seat scissors frame. The hinge means can also be hinge, pin, or axle, as is known to those having skill in the art.
In operation, the combined assembly 100 is stored folded with the vertical members 304, 306 close together, reduced to its minimum length, and scissors frame folded. The entire assembly 100 takes a minimum of space when stored. It is notable that there are no rigid horizontal members in the assembly. The right and left sides of the chair are held together by tension on the flexible covers 202, 302. The user will unfold the assembly and adjust the vertical members 304, 306 to the desired height for placing in a pool. Otherwise, the vertical members can be left short and the pool chair used as a deck chair. Other structures may be a part of this invention, but are not shown since they are not claimed.
The flexible covers 202, 302 can be made of canvas, nylon, or other chlorine-compatible material. The other structures may be made of PVC or other water and chlorine-compatible material.
Although the preferred embodiments of the present invention have been described herein, the above description is merely illustrative. Further modification of the invention herein disclosed will occur to those skilled in the respective arts and all such modifications are deemed to be within the scope of the invention as defined by the appended claims.
